I need head work.
I'm figuring I'll just replace my ailing heads with new Thunderstorm heads.
My question is this: Do I need to switch the pistons or is it just a matter of max. horse power?

You need the T Storm pistons to reap the benefits of the T Storm heads and keep the compression at 10.1 or there abouts.

Consider sending your heads to have them re-worked.You will get a better result. They will suggest a piston match.

Not trying to step on toes here but you can do it either way, you can work the heads you have and if you want more compression have them milled. I would simply buy the 1250 kit that someone had posted for $750.00, have my heads ported and polished and slap a set of big valves in them. If thats not enough toss a TURBO on it!

if your replacing your heads, go with the xb heads....... they flow better than thunderstorm, and are a great match with flat top heads that u currently do have....... if you do get thunderstorm heads, you should get the matching pistons..... but whatever you do, you will still need to remove the cyls as you have relieved the clampload on your base gaskets..... reuse them and your sure to be doing the job over again cuz of leaks..... and depending on your financial situation get the 1250 kit and hang on.......

The ideal match would be a set of XB12 heads with XB9 pistons. Really goes like stink on 93 octane gas. You will need to have the cylinders honed by a reputable shop that does HD jugs. They must be put into torque plates before honing to assure roundness. What you are shooting for is a squish of .030" cold, with gaskets. The typical Buell rolls off of the assembly line at about .050".

It will run like a scared ant.

Get a set of XL1200R heads. They are XB heads already drilled for carb mounting brackets.
