Dj,

Watch out,,,,,all the Belgium citizens living south of Brussels, the French speakers, will be mad at you now. They also have a eastern edge of the country that primarily uses German.

This is a most circular debate : )

Would you have been as angry if they were blasting nsync or brittney spears.

I have, on more than one occasion, fired up winamp & played roulette. Even Bollywood is better than Britney "Spears in my ears". Spent a few afternoons listening to synncopated Ukranian dance music. Can't understand a d@mn word of it, but it's far more inpsiring than the pablum of our charts.

I hope my statement doesn't spark a war between Belgium and Lithuania, then. But seriously... I wonder if the Flemish and French speakers in Belgium complain about the polka music the German speakers play.

I hate polka music too, btw. I don't care if it's Mexican polka, Lithuanian polka, or fusion polka... if it's played with an accordian... I don't like it.

We used to be a nation that spoke softly and carried a big stick, now we speak loudly and carry a tooth pick. "Oh,don't say that, you might offend them." People do the stupid things they do today because their parents didn't tell them not to because it might hurt their feelings. We don't insist people who come here speak english because it might offend them...

I remember a day when a few of us were still also held responsible for our actions too... [insert joke about quicksand vagina here]

Ok, here's where I start to actually say anything.

I've been overseas. Almost everywhere you go, English is [taught as] a second language. Basically it's testament to the power of the American dollar. Pull out a greenback and there's someone in arms' reach that can understand you.

The inability to maintain an influence "inside" our borders is disparaging. (pull out that greenback here and all bets are off...)

I can see things going either way.

I was at Burger King the other day behind a Mexican family. Girl behind the counter was a real cute latin looking thang. The order went down in English, the son in the family translating. It was an encouraging site, as it's usually the "next" generation that picks up our language and runs with it.

But I'm not willing to go out on any limb and predict that this event above signals any sort of trend.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that I believe that English should be required in the US of A. But, I will say that we should not be bending over backwards, and frontwards, as we are, printing street signs and schoolbooks in anything but. We ourselves are removing any incentive for anyone to assimilate, often times for the sake of a vote.

Oooops, I just went political. (how'd we get four pages deep and not anyway?)

Damn, Skyguy, I’m still laughing about the image of that Mexican guy chasing a shrimp around with his shirt pocket. No way to know the particulars of how he got that job, but one thing’s for certain; he’s got cajones. I like to think that one day maybe he’ll have his own Japanese Restaurant.

By the way, not to tick anyone off, but I have to keep a couple Italians.

I went to too much work to get birth certificates translated. Turns out they were actually born.

Is Orville one of the recent MILLIONS...MILLIONS!! of Illegal immigrants who are/have been coming here recently? That's the DIFFERENCE...controlled immigration versus ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. How many MILLIONS of Lithuanians or Germans came here ILLEGALLY??? And THAT is the problem with Mexicans.Their government BLOWS!

That's pretty bad... I got Lithuanian blood in me... I should know that. Where the hell is Lithuania, anyway?

Baltic sea, next to russia, part of the former USSR
Hear is the intersting part, and where the polish part comes into play
A Lith queen married a polish prince, and as part of the marriage, poland was granted land rights to a once lith country side, every since lith are pissed at the polls for taking there land, hence the reason i asked if your grnad ma was actually polish or lith, there is some inter marriage, and there are 2 different forms of lithuanian high land and low land, each being similar but different

Anyone got anything against Lithuanians?

Tons i married a first gen, we can start with the outlaw and go from there

Here is the really funny thing, at least to me
First gen lith's who came over after WW II, hate, i mean actually hate the new arrivals(as in past 10 years) even thought there from the same place, some times are related, and all share similar fetures
Strange
I will leave you with one last note Dj, dont ever complain about out sourcing, know why, cause lithuanian the language is the oldest language that is in use today, its based on sand scrit, a form of sand scrit that originated in INDIA
Hence you indian by proxy
Heheheheh
Dont belive me look it up, theres a lithuanina history class at UIC
So i guess Indians can stay

How many would you like me to introduce you to
i know tons, liths, polls, rissians, mexicans, bulgarian, cubans
They come over on student visas than disapear
Its not just mexicans, so get that out of your head
And how, if i may ask, do you know for 100% sure that Orvills parents came here legal
or do you???

the last "pro-immegrant" rally in the city of big shoulders and no necks was amply attended by Irish and viet and cambodian and phillipeno and --- you name it -- many stood up and declared themselves as illegals also --

immegration is a thorny problem, certainly, but going postal over music in a drive in? to quote myself, sheesh

I'm decidedly against a national language (any language), but fluancy in the local dialect is important if you're ever gonna live outside the barrio/ghetto/grandma's house

and I ain't leavin -- as to the confluance of viking/scientolist influances, I ain't sayin nothin, either

Hey Grndskpr! Thanks for the historical insight on Lithuania... what a great post.

"...I think I'm a mutt..."

I know I am... literally. No mixing in my mother and fathers gene pool... they were born and raised on opposite sides of the world. If America is considered the land of immigrants, my family is as American as American can possibly be.

At one time not 20 years ago the second largest group of illegal immigrants in the USA was, wait a moment, IRISH! Which would explain why Ted Kennedy pushed the last amnesty bill through congress with such enthusiasm. This has slowed way down lately as the irish economy is doing very well.

Ummmmm except for a few tribes in central Africa (and they wander around quite a bit), arn't we (all of all the rest in the world) technicly immigrants?

If someone comes to this country and wants to embrace it as their adopted homeland. To become part of the whole. To contribute to the fabric of the nation. Is that not what all of the rest of our extended (and in some cases not so extended) families did?

The only issue I have a hard time with is language. I grew up in an area where there were many different cultures (Italian, Portugese, Polish to name a few). Yes they still spoke their language had their music but made an attempt to learn and use the language spoken in their adopted country.

Or maybe Iraq.

Why oppose a "national language"? Seems like a reasonable thing to ask prospective citizens to be minimally proficient in English on account of a nation divided by language would seem to be a nation easily divided. But we are a collection of States, so maybe it should be left up to the individual states. Too much fed power for my taste anyway.

Roger, stop, yer killin' me! Guess what time it is for me; it's self-inflicted torture time! Yes time to rent the aeriator/torture device and overseed with Fescue for the Winter lawn.

I s'pose I could hire a Mexican to do it for me. But I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Or maybe it's something about making all the little dirt plugs that entertains me. LOL Or Maybe it's the "Henrik" in me that has to have it done precisely perfectly in optimal fashion. Have we just coined a new term for the board?... No need to "Henrik" that, just giterdone! joker

national language is way to political for this nice, family oriented board

I heard somewhere (may have been Paul Harvey, so you know it's got to be true) that more Americans can trace a history back to Germany than any other country in the world. Second was England.

Let's all just pick a random country and move there. I don't really care where as long as gas is cheap, there are plenty of twisties and I can take my bike. Oh yeah and K. (I luv U honey)-just in case she reads this thread -
