At my local Sonic "America's Drive In" drinking a milk shake... Freaking Mexican polka music was on the speaker system.

I'll not eat there again.

I dislike see what my forefathers fought and died for turning into another country. My grandfather and his 4 brothers did not fight in WWII for America to turn into another country. I did not serve 8 years in the US military to see my home town turn into little Mexico.

I dislike trying to enjoy a milkshake at "Sonic America's Drive In" and listing to NON-American music.

Alexander Hamilton insisted that "the safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of citizens from foreign bias and prejudice; and on the love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education, and family."

Clearly, Washington`s call for "one people," Madison`s insistence that the immigrant "incorporate himself into our society," Jefferson`s concern that some newcomers might not be prepared for "temperate liberty," and Hamilton`s emphasis on the "safety" of our republic and the "love of country," are all more or less of one piece. They are a clarion call for "patriotic assimilation." Given the founders` forthright insistence on patriotic assimilation, it is not surprising that the Naturalization Law of 1795 required that before becoming American citizens, aliens would have to "renounce under oath" all previous sovereign allegiances. This "renunciation clause" remains today part of the naturalization law and part of the oath to the U. S. Constitution that all new citizens must take.

Theodore Roosevelt`s "In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us"

I ate at a Chinese restaurant the other day, and they had the nerve to play Chinese music. What is this country coming to. How dare someone express their heritage. Italians, Irish, Germans, you are welcome to stay now because we all look similar. Everyone else must leave or breed away their ethnicity.

How would you feel about Native American Music being played? It was their country first. You might want to rethink your position on who's country it was first before spouting who has the right to be here. I never read any history books about the Native Americans inviting us to come here a take over their land. Maybe you should ride through an Indian Reservation and look at was "their Nation" has been reduced to.

Like it or not, we are a den of mongrels. I have no problem encountering the echos of a neighbor's ethnicity such as music, food, etc. What I don't like are immigrants who come illegally or who come here and want to change America into the country they left, or those who come and do not conform (speak English, drive a red convertable, wear 501's) to our baseline culture.

Additionally, if these people do not have any Johnny Cash in their CD collection after 3 years, I say we shoot them into outer space and burn their house down.

Well, I started serious...

Eboos, perhaps you missed me stating where I was eating at. I type it again.

SONIC "AMERICA'S DRIVE IN"

"SONIC: An American Tradition
Still On The Go
SONIC® Drive-In Carhops have been serving up beloved American food and signature SONIC® favorites at "the speed of sound" since 1953.

SONIC is parked in a very prominent place in the annals of drive-in history. Not only did we develop innovations in the drive-in concept, but we are one of the few remaining drive-in chains left in America. In an industry overwrought with automation, SONIC keeps the personal touch. Carhops still deliver food prepared-to-order right to your car.

We still make the best burgers and malts, plus signature goodies like Extra-Long Cheese Coneys and Chocolate Cream Pie Shakes. Our appeal doesn't necessarily hail from the past, but from an energy and personality that has thrived by surprising and delighting generations of Americans. Click below to see our story."

Ryker, perhaps you missed the sarcasm of my post.

My family too has a history of service to our country from as far back as when we immigrated here. In my experience in the Marine Corps, I had the pleasure to serve with British, Pollish, Russian, Chech, French, Kenyan, Morracan, Jamacian, Egyptian, Dominican, Columbian, and yes, even Mexican citizens that choose to come to this country for a better life and fight to serve this country.

(My apologies to any other nationality of persons whom I have served with that are not mentioned here)

I've got a wonderful idea why don't you just roll up your window and play your own "american" music inside your car that is why it is a drive in. And give the workers a brake. Would you have been as angry if they were blasting nsync or brittney spears. As someone who works in the food service industry I'll tell you I'm gonna play the music that I like to listen to when I am working an 8 hour shift. Lay off these hard working kids and find something else to complain about.

Randle, the workers did not choose that music. It was a program that is played by the manager or owners request.

Eboos. I too served in the Marines with many non-Americans. My best buddy in the service was a Russian. The people I served with were taking part in America. They were not just squatting on our land.

I can't believe that so many people are just willing to give up on our country. Our forefathers had warned the country of this.

With each wave of imigration, we have been fearful of how it would dilute our national identity. Each nationality has been discriminated against at one point. Unfortunatly for some, their apperiance makes it harder for them to blend in to some people's expectations of what is an American.

I used to work in a machine shop that thrived on illegals. It was sickening to have to listen to....salsa music all day.I couldn't understand not one word of it.But it kept THEM motivated, screw any Americans who don't understand Spanish.Anyways they'd often state that in a decade Spanish will be our national language..Better learn it soon!

Enforcement of the law is a seperate issue. I am not angry about anyone who came here legally not being the same as me. The problem with dealing with the illegal imigration is that it has gone on, unchecked, for too long.

Immigration is a problem that will not be solved over night. Or economy has been built on the cheap labor that illegals provide. I bet for every immigrant that you say abuses the welfare and health systems you can find another handful that put in 100 hr weeks just so you don't have to pay too much for your fruit when you go to walmart. If you want to find something destroying america look at the top of the food chain not the bottom.

but how do you define an American? There is no single definition...that's part of what makes America so strong.

I'm a Bermudian of British descent who lives in America...I 'm considering becoming a citizen...if I do, does that make me less of an American than anyone else? I don't think so

but hey, your forefathers were Brits, so maybe that puts me ahead... ; )

Bdabuell, welcome to the club. There are no requirements of membership as far as I am concerned other then being honest and hard working. The American Dream is still here, you just have to believe in it.

Love for your country, that is sort of like love for a family member. For a citizen born in this country, it should be like love for your child. No matter how your children may disappoint you during their lives, you will still love them the same.

For an immigrant, it is like love for your spouse. You didn't always love them, but you learned to (or at least should have). Your spouse needed to earn your love, and keep earning that love. Would intolerance and suspicion have earned the love of your spouse?

Eboos - I see your point - makes good sense to me.

I just didn't like the whole sweeping generalization against immigrants...

Illegals are a totally different matter...I feel very strongly about that - if I came here the "right" way, there's no reason why anyone else can't (speaking of sweeping generalizations ; ) )

but hey, let 'em all play whatever music they like...if I play The Clash and someone bitches, they'll get the two-finger salute and a swift increase in volume...

I'm from Texas. The same Texas that was taken from Mexico way back on April 21, 1836.

So what if they play polka at Sonic. Sonic brands itself as "America's Drive-in." WTF is that all about? I don't remember voting for a damn "Drive-In."

If you are refering to my remarks about immigrants, I intentionally tried to sound like a bigot in order to show the lunacy of that point of view. Here is a sweeping generalization, we are all immigrants here. Even the Native Americans immigrated here at one point, they were just here first. My family did not have the fortune of being among the founding fathers, but they and others like them had every bit of an important part in shaping this country.

what is American music?

Rock, Country, R&B?

You may be suprised at the origin of these music types.

Washington and Hamilton were slave owners and Roosevelt was a member of the wealthy New York aristocracy. I'd hazard a guess that you and I have a hell of a lot more in common with Mexican immigrants than any of those people.

We should be happy that they wrote language into the constitution that allowed people of our origin to emmigrate, thrive and flourish in the US.

if ignorance is bliss than ryker must be the happiest man in the world.. it amazes me that "grown" men can still be so close minded. i dont agree with illegal immigration ,like most... but i understand why the hard working, family oriented people that are from south of our border want to be here. go to mexico, and try to find a job and supporty YOUR family.i'm not saying it's not possible, but it is difficult. and no,i'm not hispanic. my family has been in the united states since the very early 1800's. but we came here when we were looking for a better life also!!!
