my brother Doug and his wife Sandy just got back from a two-week flight to the North Pole and back in their '57 Beechcraft Bonanza, from their home in Bremerton, WA (near Seattle), thought you'd enjoy a couple of pix.

they're the plane second nearest to the camera. this shot reminds me of some sportbike rides i've been on.

here's a link to a brief piece and a couple of pix in their local newspaper before they launched. (it'll take a bit to load, especially if you're on a slow connection...)

Ahhhh...the Beech "Dr. Killer". That is one of the greatest planes ever made....superior performance.

That must be a fantastic experience flying to the NP.

Tramp mentioned Mooney. My friend has, I believe, an M20.

I flew it down to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 1996, and they treat us like royalty upon arrival! By the way, if anyone ever gets the opportunity to be anywhere near the Goodwood Festival, do not at your peril miss it under any circumstance. This year Mike Hailwood's Honda Six went up the 'hill' in the hands of its owner Bob Heath. He dropped it! Now where in the world are you likely to see anyone chucking a £250.000+ motorcycle down the road?

Anyways, here's a pic of a Mooney like my friends. I likened it to a Saab inside. I especially liked the sticker on the window glass, "do not open over 150mph". I need one of them for my TVR, lol.

Great pics, thanks! I can't wait until I'm in a position to get my private pilot's license. So far my schedule hasn't really allowed it...

I've flown small planes a few times, and it's a great feeling. It's not nearly as cool as hovering a helicopter, but it's way cheaper!

The Haughtons are taking a big trip across the Alaskan wilderness to celebrate their life.

The excitement in Doug Haughton’s voice was unmistakable as he rattled off details about the big Alaskan adventure he and his wife, Sandy, were about to undertake.

They’ve got a few good reasons to celebrate, too.

On Monday, the Haughtons climbed into their 1957 Beechcraft Bonanza, one of the most revered civil aircraft of all-time, to fly with 14 other planes into the wilds of Alaska.

"It’ll be something out of the box for us," Doug said before taking off.

Most people probably know the Haughtons through their business, Liberty Bay Auto Center in Poulsbo. During years of toiling with the business, far-flung vacations weren’t usually in the itinerary, Doug said.

This "out of the box" vacation certainly is far-flung, as it will take them clear above the Arctic Circle and into the northernmost regions of the nation’s 49th state. The adventure was organized by the "Let’s Fly Alaska" guided tour service.

The company’s Web site tells pilots that they’ll "see high mountain glaciers like few will ever see them."

Navigating those mountains, challenging flying, and the thrill of planning such a long trip are exciting for Doug, a long-time pilot and president of the Bremerton Pilots and Tenants Association.

But the trip is also a celebration of something much more important than thrills and adventure.

"It was like the celebration of life flight mixed with the anniversary," Doug said.

When the Haughtons began planning the trip 15 months ago, they were also battling Sandy’s breast cancer, which was invasive and advanced.

Planning the adventure was therapeutic in its own way, giving them something positive to look forward to in the future — something they could plan doing together.

In that time they also marked their 30-year wedding anniversary, so the flight is icing on that cake.

The trip is expected to take about two weeks, and while they’ll get the chance to see the wilds of Alaska from above, they won’t have to sleep there. All the stops will afford them modern accommodations. Included in the flight plans are Quesnel and White Horse, both in Canada, and Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay, Dead Horse, Anchorage, Homer, Valdez and Ketchikan, all in Alaska.

They’ve never taken an aerial trip this far, but Doug is confident in the woman who’ll sit to his right.

"She’s an excellent co-pilot," he said.

For the most part, Doug Haughton has restored his 1957 Beechcraft Bonanza to its original condition. Haughton has upgraded the engine and a few other navigational devices to take advantage of modern aviation technology for his and his wife's trip over the Alaskan wilderness.

I didn't have to go to Oshkosh -- living near the big water near the state line, the much of the show goes right over my back yard!

little beats hangin out in the hammock and watching the guys go by in their old iron -- great sights, better racket!

Flying into Osh Kosh is some of the most fun I have had in an airplane. The air show is a pretty small part of the whole thing. There is far more to see there on the ground than in the air.

Flying into Oshkosh is work. Camping under the wing is the fun. Unless it rains Wisconsin Dogs.

My employer bought a Bonanza from Ed King. That puppie was loaded, and we rented it for $45/hr wet. Sweet deal while it lasted. Garmin then certified the first IFR Loran in that airplane.

Not quite as fast as this guy was in it's day.

LORAN (LOng RAnge Navigation) is a terrestrial navigation system using low frequency radio transmitters that use the time interval between radio signals received from three or more stations to determine the position of a ship or aircraft. Before the popularity of the satellite-based GPS system, it was primarily used in marine applications. The current version of LORAN in common use is LORAN-C, which operates in the low frequency 90 to 110 kHz band.

Me....?. . . I prefer ADF (Automated Direction Finder) since it operated in athe AM radio band and I could listen to KC Royals games late at night while flying home. I used to use it to keep me awake. You have no idea how easy it is for the drone of an engine to lull you to sleep at 1AM over the Ozarks.

Here's what I'm hoping. . . if we can keep this aviation thread going long enough....we'll lure Capt. Pete in. He has one must be one of the funniest and funnest crossing the country....barely...by small airplane tales you've ever heard.

Not only is he a great storyteller (how could you be a commercial fisherman and NOT be?) but he has some GREAT stories!

My wife has declared me "unsafe at any altitude".

Ceejay, agree that the pic is great, wish i could take credit for the photography, but i can't. the photo was taken from plane #7 in the group, piloted by Al and Gwen Brock.

ALL of the planes on this particular trip were Beechcraft Bonanzas. there were 14 aircraft in total, with pilots/co-pilots from as far away as Atlanta, Georgia and Cancun, Mexico.

not sure if non-aviators reading this are aware, but bonanzas have a very buell-esque stature in the aviation world.
