I need a track bike and I think I have settled on a Tuono. I know that there are better choices out there but I would like something that I could ride off-track also. Clip-ons are okay on the track but bad on the street.

Would I have to get some lower bars?

Anyone used a Tuono on the track and want tho chime in?

E-Bear and Scott Page both have Tuono's,hopefully they will chime in for you. I did a track day demo on Milles.It was a blast,great bike for that.

I have never done a track day on a Big Tuna, ( but I sure wouldn't mind trying).

Now a days, lots of guys start out on dirt bikes, and they don't mind throwing a big old litre bike around with the kind of dirt bars they had has a kid. Not me.

Back in the day, if we wanted to go fast on a bike that didn't have clip ons, (most did not), we fitted a set of "Clubman's Bars". That's more my style.

Here is a pair of Tomasselli Adjustable Clubman's bars as fitted to my Buell Lightning. They are a lot higher than clip ons, but they bring the riders weight forward, and offer a good hand grip. The Tuna has a big pair of handlebar risers, so you might want to give them or something similar a try. I feel a lot more comfortable chasing ricers in the twisties with these bars than I did with the stockers.

People used to take the old superbikes (early 80's CB's and that sort of thing) and flip the handlebars upside down... I was looking at a friends "S" and it looked possible.

Get your Tuono AND get a throw-away racebike. You'd save the purchase price of one of these bikes in just tires in a year.

You might have to sign up to see the WSMC site since it got hacked, they've tightened up the security until they sort it out. There are EX500, GS500 and other lightweight racebikes you can get for really throw-away prices. USE THEM UP for a season. If you're doing a couple track days a year and are pretty mature and don't get sucked into the racing game, the Tuono is an excellent machine (ignoring the price). If you do one track day a month, it might be kinda heavy on tires. You get less than 1/5 the miles at speed on the track that you can get on the street. The little twins and singles can go 3 full track days on a set of rubber - longer sometimes.

Thanks for the advise. Right now I am at the 4 to 6 track days a year pace.

I seriously considered a little bike but I have 2 major concerns:

At almost 300 lbs. I make any bike top-heavy and I am a little afraid of riding a bike on the track that I weigh almost as much as,

And I may not be a great rider, but I am a pretty good rider and I want to have enough power so I do not want to buy a new track bike in a couple of years (my relationship with my wife won't survive it).

Patrick,

I have lust in my heart for the Aprila bikes - Mille AND Tuono - and certainly understand your points about the marriage and two bikes and a track day "habit"

You can also pickup a race-ready 600-class bike for maybe $4K about 4 years old but yeah, that starts spreading yourself pretty thin with both a Tuono and the track-only bike.

I just hate thinking of tipping over on the Tuono! Long as you're not sucked into situations where you're likely to drop it, life could be GOLDEN on the track on a Tuono.

If you go that route, PLEASE post your experiences!!! It will be fun reading about it!
