Aprilla is the only company we are ahead of that means a damn as far as I am concerned, but it is nice to be placed above a good Italian Brand.

Statistical BS. It should read most units produced instead of most popular.

There's Moto Guzzi too. Make that ahead of two good Italian brands!

Moto Guzzi is alright in my mind....I personally would buy an Aprilla over a Moto Guzzi.

I'm coming from the opposite direction. I'd buy a Moto Guzzi over an Aprilia. I just have a thing for pushrod V-twins.
In fact, I had a very hard time deciding between a Ulysses and a Guzzi Breva 1100. I consider the Guzzi to be that good a motorcycle.

I think my prob with Moto Guzzi is the orientation of the engine. The "sidways" mounting posistion just doesnt do it for me. To each his own though it is what makes this a great sport/hobby. I wouldn't mind owning an RSV or a Duc 999R for that matter

if a problem arises in choice between a Guzzi and BMW, I hope this will clear the air.

I, too, would buy a Moto Guzzi over an Aprilia. In fact, when I bought my '97 S3 the only other contender was a Guzzi. The reason is Ease Of Maintenance, a minor deity as far as I am concerned. I got really tired of removing bodywork for 20 minutes before I could work on the engines of my previous two bikes, and I got tired of how often I had to do it. I bought the Buell in part because there's no body work to remove, no valves to gap, no carbs to balance, no fuel pump or water pump to service, no chain to clean and lube, etc. The Guzzi was a close second because although you have to gap the valves, they're positioned so that it's a really easy and quick operation. I'd never even consider owning a Ducati because of the Weird Harold Desmo valve actuation scheme that practically takes a mechanical engineer to work on, and I'd never own a motorcycle with shim under bucket valve adjustment. Push rods, screw tappets, or somebody else can own it. I want to ride my motorcycle several hundred times more than I want to work on it. In that, I am certain that I am not alone.

If you like Moto Guzzis and S3's, you'll probably like this bike a lot:

Not wanting to have a shim under bucket valvetrain? Let's see, my '97 CBR went in for an adjustment at 25,000mi. and that was mainly because the chain adjuster went to crap.
Granted my S3 at 58,000mi. hasn't had any valve adjustment problems but if you want to compare the maintenance file between the two.....
