Ok guys,

Now I want to totally rid my ride of pinging. Is it possible? So far I have run the cooler plugs and did a rejet of the carb. Also, run a fatter needle. Running premium gas helped reduce pinging however, I still hear pinging when I get heavy on the throttle. I don't think this is good for my ride. Any solutions to my problem?

Thanks

Mike

At what RPM are you whacking the throttle open?
If it's much below 3,000rpm there isn't much that can be done to cure it.

Also, you should be running minimum 92octane (or there abouts) from day-1.

Mike . . . .pinging is definately bad for your ride . . . .anyone's ride . . . . ..

check the timing

run non-dino-based oil (I know, it doesn't seem to make sense at first glance, but Mobil 1 helped my Y2K Ma Deuece shed about 20 degrees)

check the timing

run it til it's about as hot as it gets, pull over, shut down, and stick a thermometer into the oil bag . .. . .. how hot is the oil? consider an oil cooler

did I mention check the timing?

also. . . . .when you say "premium gas," what the octane? is is gas or gasahol (more than, what is it, 10% hol can be bad for some engines, I hear)

I have the same problem with my 2km2, and I have done everything but the timing as well.

Can you get timing dead on without a dyno? By dead on, I mean "not pinging and max power", not "where the factory said all the marks should line up". I am assuming these are two different places.

I really need to find somebody who knows performance and knows harleys and has a dyno I think... I know my main is a little too rich (a 200) as well.

Check your V.O.E.S.,my 2000 M2 had the same symptoms,I reset it from 4.5 factory to 5.5,and it corrected my problem.

My S1 never pinged until I moved down south. The solution(s)...richening up the low speed jetting some, using full synth instead of semi-synth, unshrouding the rear cylinder some by cutting down the tailsection, and an oil cooler. I just need a dyno tune to verify my jetting.

Yost jet kit! It will never ping again. You will also lose some gas mileage. Then, just for kicks I added a thunderjet. I still get 40mpg, but my bike no longer pings. 99 M2.

First, you may have an intake leak. Check for an intake leak by setting your idle at around 2,000 rpm and spraying contact cleaner or WD40 liberally around all the seals on your intake manifold (carburetor and each of the cylinder head interfaces). If the idle drops, you have found and intake leak.

If not, you may have carbon buildup in your cylinders. There exists some type of oven cleaner spray type of stuff that some Harley shops sell that does a pretty good job of cleaning carbon deposits from the combustion chambers. Sorry, I don't recall the name. Some say you can simply spray a stream of water into a hot running engine and the steam will help dislodge the carbon. I'm skeptical of that. bit it might be worth a try. Make sure the engine is hot.

Pull the crankcase vent out of the intake. If pinging stops... that may indicate excessive blow-by. You might consider a compression and leakdown test to ascertain the health of the piston ring to cylinder sealing.

Next, check timing. Simply retard it a few degrees from where it is and see if that helps.

Check VOES.

Run a good quality synthetic and always use only high octane fuel.

Your M2 should NOT be pinging.

A VOES is a Vaccuum Operated Electrical Switch. It tells your bikes brain when to change the ignition curve.

Richieg150...how do you reset the v.o.e.s.? Can an average joe do it or is it way above an electrical dumbass like myself?
