i purchased a used 99 X1 with the following parts installed, V&H carbon slip on, buell race ECM, K&N filter in a gutted air box. The bike runs really rich and i need to correct it. It will stumble at varying points, bellows balck smoke out of the exhaust and seems to get terrible gas mileage. I am just curious if my problem lies in my parts combination or if i need to look else where. Any help would be appreciated.

"stumble at varying points, bellows black smoke out of the exhaust and seems to get terrible gas mileage"
Try cleaning the O2 sensor (or just replace it,~$20, Bosch 12014, AC Delco AFS 20, NTK universal), check the wire to the head temperature sensor isn't broken (near rear spark plug). IIRC, the O2 sensor on '99s was mounted nearer the exhaust port then later models, and doesn't last as long. As well, the head temp sensor was moved to the center of the head on later models due to it's vulnerable position on '99s. Check that oil, or engine cleaner hasn't contaminated the outside surface of the O2 sensor (it needs outside oxygen to compare to exhaust oxygen) Compare O2 sensor to pictures at Walker O2. Try to note when it runs OK - AFAIK, the O2 sensor is only used between ~2500-3500 rpm with partial throttle, but it made a big difference in MPG when I changed mine...

Further to my previous response:
Also check the Intake Air temperature sensor in the airbox - like the head temperature thermistor, it reads higher resistance at lower temperatures, so if it is open the ECM will think the engine /intake air is very cold - and run richer.

Agree with the sensor theory. Have a Y2K X1 with same mods and added a Techlusion Digital Fuel Optimizer to take out the lean spots on the Dyno.
