Im always amazed when people see my Buell, they usually ask,"How fast does it go?"They never ask how it handles, how torquie is it,or anything else.I find it kinda funny that to some or even maybe most bikers, top speed seems to be the main consern.I tell them that if I wanted to go WFO at 140+,I would just go buy a Jap bike and be like every other person on the block. But why be like everybody else?"DIFFERENT IN EVERY SENSE"

I just tell them it only does about 220kph I think.

If I wanted to do 300kph I would go get a BUSA.

I got my bolt up to 137mph. It may have a little bit more but it wasnt pulling much more. I have the race ecm, air filter, latus muffler, and a modified airbox. The bike climbs to 120mph real quick and then creeps up to 130-135.

Just tell them that anything over 100mph is a felony in many states and you enjoy the right to vote for the county sheriff. ;)

A felony, some real strict traffic laws down there.

You would lose your license for a period of time but no criminal record. Only if you take off and run from the cop.

They should post that magic number for each state on the speed limit signs. I wonder if I can say my speedo sensor just died and I'm trying to pace the traffic until I get to a shop to fix it. (My M2 sensor did just go out again last weekend, hopefully the new improved one I just put in will last longer.)

>>>I wonder if I can say my speedo sensor just died and I'm trying to pace the traffic until I get to a shop to fix it.

I wondered too.

And, based on the day they seized me 3 times in one day in Ohio, (twice by the same officer) enroute from Topeka, KS to Pocono B.R.A.G. event, I assure you it's wasted breath.

Someday, I'll tell you how I got out of the tickets.

I recently did a Baja trip with 2 friends. I was on a BMW R100GS. They were on a newer BMW GS and a Kawasaki KLR650. We tried to stay largely on dirt, and succeeded. When we were forced onto pavement, it varied from marginal to truly spectacular.

Though the speed limits were artificially low (about 80 kph most of the time) there was virtually NO enforcement for major stretches. I kept thinking about my BMW K1200RS (max maybe 155) doing 120+ for extended stretches. Being Mexico, the worst you would have to worry about was fines and/or bribes (Points? We don't give no steenkin' points!). Just bring a fat wallet. And maybe some octane booster.

And the dirt wasn't bad, either

So Court,

Are you still allowed to drive in that state??

Eddie,

Looks I bet you had a great time, the bike I had before the S1 was a KLR650 and was some kind of urban assault vehicle. The places you could put that thing was amazing. I miss it and would love to have another as a second bike.

The X1's with the race kit & US gearing top out at an honest 139mph. The Bolts setup similar are good for 133mph.

The KLR was the best "weapon" for this particular Baja trip. We had LOTS more problems with the BMW's.

In retrospect, I shoulda taken my DRZ400S, if I could have figured a way to carry my gear. Pete managed it, though I didn't much care for the way he had stuff piled behind him.

The lady at the hotel in Ciudad Constitucion couldn't figure out why he needed a room for 2!

I am an Honorary Citizen of Ohio...and the ones in Utah were a couple of our Swedish guests. Manh of you may recall the picture in Battle2Win of them standing before the jail displaying the receipt.

Bret Schaller, Buell Chief Engineer, and I had just addressed a group of visiting foreign media on the final day of the 1999 "Secret Media Intro" in St. George, UT. Go back and read the motorcycle.com account and you'll see I'm telling the truth....120oF in the shade.

I warn the group...."okay, this is our last ride on the last day. We've had a lot of fun...blah, blah, blah....)

Off they go like gunshots.

Bret and I come rolling up on the intersection of the interstate about 5 minutes later and two of them are laying in the ditch, still helmeted and HANDCUFFED.

I think it was Reg who bailed them out...in hopes of an Ambassadorship.

:)

Best one our there was when our "guests" were shooting through a curvy small camping area posted at 15MPH seeing who could trip the automatic radar at the highest number...BONUS for triple digit.

I'm sitting in the parking area when what appeared to be a 19 year old Boy Scout leader in shorts and a bandana wearing a Sig Sauer 9mm came up to me screaming..."are you the guy from Harley?". "Why, yes...I am their hosts".

"Either they slow down or I am going to shoot the next SOB through here". The Japenese guys from Rider's Club understood my hick accent no better than they did that of the child enforcer, but I got my group out of there.

About 12 miles up the road, at "base camp", one of the assholes who we'd toted along to lead rides asked me..."ya know any good twisties?".

Uh.....yeah...a great one.....

(Erik Buell if you read this...NONE OF IT's TRUE.)

Rick,

I haven't forgotten you. I'll send you copies of the motor courses as soon as I can get them from the County instructor. (Our instructor is no longer in the squad). As far as getting out of tickets, I have a soft spot for riders who wear helmets, leather boots, long pants, leather, and have a valid motorcycle license. That will usually get you away with a "suggestion" to not do it again. I get crazy mad at these guys riding around sans helmet in sandles, shorts, and a muscle or no shirt. They make us all look bad. It's Heritage bike week here this week. I'll try and post some photos of the carnage!!!

How fast does it go? I dunno; let's find out. :D

I went out for a ride on Sunday on my Cyclone. Didn't see much over 100 mph, but man if felt great. You wouldn't believe how many guys on bikes were out and they were all trying to show how fast they could go. At one point I came to rest among a big group that was stopped at an intersection leading into some great twisties. We all took off together; they blasted off, some with front wheel in the air, trying to leave me behind. I was bringing up the tail end hitting near a buck in 4th gear when here comes a sharp left hander. I nail the front brake, the rear tire waggling weightless merely along for the ride at that point. I get her quickly decelerated down to 40 mph and 2nd gear and cranked over hard scraping across the left edge of the pavement. It's a darn good thing there was no oncoming traffic! Without cutting across the left side I would not have made the turn.

Exiting the curve I eased the throttle wide open bringing up the front wheel ever so slightly before speed shifting into 3rd then 4th going hard down a hill through an easy right hand sweeper then into another sharp left hand curve, well not really a curve, more like a freaking hairpin turn! As the bike immediately in front set up wide right to take the curve in conventional fashion, I was again coming in hot, so I stood her up and headed for the inside again - what the hell, I hadn't seen any cars on the road all morning. It was a pretty secluded road, not much reason for traffic of the four wheeled type.

My Cyclone's brand new stock brake pads were working great with the new EBC rotor (THANKS Frank!); an easy two finger pull once again got the rear wheel waggling while I blipped and shifted back down into 3rd gear and got the old Cyclone leaned hard left, totally blowing by the guy who I had been trailing. Exiting the curve, again thankful for no oncoming traffic, I could once again see the stream of bikes ahead. I continued on in similar fashion for about another 16 miles running like a rider possessed, chasing the gaggle of Japanese sport bikes, passing when the opportunities arrose. A couple guys even crashed. ohwell When we finally stopped I was plum wore out, but to be honest, I felt great. It may be foolish, but I'm up for that kind of riding again. Risking life and limb and showing some squids on Jap repliracers what a Buell can do was really satisfying.

What's really cool though... I took 4th place!

It was CCS/CMRA Race #19 at Oak Hill Raceway - Thunderbike baybee! :D

Had y'all goin' didn't I? :D

I did one practice session and three races. Not one problem other than scraping the left rear of the belly pan just a little.

Rick,
Oil temp was 245oF immediately following the Thunderbike race. Ambient temp was around 80oF. Outside of oil tank was hot enough to sizzle spit on the end of my finger but wouldn't read accurately with my IR thermometer. I think I'll be investing in an oil cooler! Sure am glad I run synthetic oil in the engine and tranny.

Dyna,
Thanks for noticing man! :) Geez, you'd think I posted that I went out an mowed the lawn for all the enthusiasm my post generated here. I ran three races; you missed the Unlimited GP Amateur results; I finished 21 out of 28. Pretty cool to finish in front of guys on GSXR750's and 1000's, especially when you consider that I was gridded dead last for the start of each race. Also the overall/combined results were interesting too. My races actually consisted of multiple classes as follows...

Race #11: Heavyweight Supersport Expert (750 IL4's and 1,000cc Jap/Italian Twins) and Formula 40 Expert and Formula 40 Amateur (Formula 40 is basically all inclusive as far as bike models/displacement). So my class was only one of three on the track. I started dead last from row 18. This was the only race where I was lapped. ;[ The HW SS experts had a head start via the first wave and they are SERIOUSLY fast, cutting laps more than 10 seconds quicker than mine). The three or four leading HW SS experts (GSXR750's, RC51, R6) caught me on their last lap. I never saw the white flag. ;[ I was robbed of a lap!! ;[ Never again! ;)

Race #14: Unlimited GP Amateur (a single class on the track at once, money race). Again, Keith and I started dead last from row 11.

M2me,
Embarrassed about riding my Buell? Not only no, but HELL NO!! :D Who's bike do you think drew more attention in the pits? I was happy to be on my favorite street bike mixing it up with my fellow CMRA racers. Next race at OHR, not till the end of September :(, I WILL be pre-registering. No more starting from dead last, at least not in Thunderbike.

Thanks for the congrats. Mainly it was just a whole hell of a lot of fun. LOTS of fun. :)
