Yes, I am a newbie, so I tried to search the archives first, but didn't find info specific to my questions.....Was it in 98 that the S1 was available with the 101hp? Was it still carborated? Are the Thunderstormed heads identifiable externally? Lastly, what color combos was it available in?

Thanks so much! Danny

Danny,
98 the S1WL and S3 came with Thunderstorm heads and a carb. Buell claimed 101HP at the crank. (~86HP at the rear wheel).
They're black. Other than that, you can verify the year and model to know if it originaly came with TStorms.

White, nuclear blue and silver frames
White, black, silver, orange, red? ... and maybe more body colors. There's a list of the total # of S1WLs shipped broken down by color floating around here somewhere.

Danny,

I have a 1998 S1 Lightning and it came stock with the Lightning Heads.

Mine is a 1998 Billet Metallic S1.

In 1998 Buell produced a 91HP S1 AND a 101HP S1WL White Lighting.

The Lighting had silver heads, the White Lightning had black heads.

Court should write a book on the Buell History.

See if this helps.....it may be a bit tough to see, but if you look closely...you'll see the S-1 has SILVER heads, the S1WL has BLACK.

Don't touch those BLACKHEADS

I bought a '97 S3 new from the dealer and it had "Lightning" heads and a claimed 91 bhp at the crank. I was a little disappointed the next year when the 101 bhp models with the "Thunderstorm" heads were released.

I think there were three lightnings in 98:

S1 - A regular S1 like previous years. Lightning heads & 3.8gal tank.

S1W - Like the S1, but with Thunderstorm heads, and a 5gal tank. Called the White lightning (101hp) but in different colors including the Molten Orange/Nuclear Blue combo.

S1WL - THE White Lightning. Same as above but all white - Ice White Pearl bodywork with white frame & wheels

All Buells in 98 were carburated.

That is incorrect. There were two models.

The S1WL began the year as WHITE ONLY. The "Rainbow Paint" program followed later in the same year and added 15 colors (no models) to the S1WL interation.

Do not make me go back looking for the date colors started......:)

98 S1WL
1,258 Ice White Pearl
378 Carbon Black
295 Orange
138 Billet Metallic

Note that this doesn't answer your question about the "standard" S1s.
