Glitch, bet we'd get along fine. Never met a Bueller I didn't like.
Forger, you old dog, I remember well how hard you tried to catch up to the group that was behind you! And so came the name 'Forger'.
We also set some records for most flat tires in a day...I think Guy won with three. Tire plugs and CO2 were the hot commodity.
Mike, Spruce is good strength/ weight and its also stiff. Downside is it rots and like previously mentioned it splits when fastened unless your predrill your fastener holes.
We'll be setting up the mill, possibly next week. I have 20K b.f. PO Cedar logs to mill. How far from JB2 do you live? I might be able to toss in a couple planks when meet him at Aarons in July. |

only reason my relay's wet is cause it got a hole melted in it from laying against the head....(aftermarket light relay)...
otherwise, all my relays are sound as a pound, baby.... |

Dang, Snail/Paul got me to thinking about something, long boards for a scarfless lapstrake or plank boat, shoot, dang, need tools and space to do it though, but dang.

I'll tell you what, give me a year or two to work out some practice boats and I might be placing an order with you. I'm probably going to need some knot-free lengths up to 24' or so, don't know yet. I've been wanting to do something. Maybe I'll just start off with a few planks to trim into strips, need tools and equipment first though. Not sure where JB2 lives, probably a state or two away, probably a day's drive or so each way, not sure.
I'm rambling so I'll wander off into my thoughts and plans offline a bit. Don't worry about throwing in a few planks, I'm not ready for them yet, but do feel free to post a few pics if you can, or email a few to my current address on the profile page message link when you get into the milling. 'scuse me now, I've got to go sketch out some jigs and forms and plans and thoughts.

the S2 started up fine last night, rode it in today, hate to tear anything apart when it's working, so will wait to seal or drill relays and such until the next time they either get wet or I do a project causing their removal.

Mike 20' is max length we can cut. I used to build small rowing dorries, called 'drift boats' which we used to run the white water rivers and for steel head fishing. Do a search for 'McKenzie
River Driftboats' and you might find a similar plan to the one we used.
We used PO cedar for rib, deck, and seat framing, marine grade fir plywoood for planking, white oak for chines, guards, bow stem, and handrails.
These are tough little boats, weighing 300 lbs. (signifcantly lighter than alum or fibrglass), big enough for three people.
I still have the last one I built. |

Yep, I'm very familiar with drift boats, been in a few, plus a few that were a bit too small built by friends over the years up in Washington state. The surf dory I had was probably 15' long and had an outboard motor well towards the back, the little Seagull 2hp motor I used to have motored it along very nicely, I think that boat resides down in Oregon now probably around Dallas at a cousin's place. I'm thinking something along these lines would work nicely for Lake Michigan. |
