That's a sad story.

Changing directions and going Code 3 places a lot of responsibility on a LEO to do it safely.

The comment that "witnesses told FHP the motorcyclist was going faster than 55-miles an hour", are unattributed, gratuitous, and speculative and have no place in responsible reporting. Sounds like something the FHP wanted to see in print to soften the pain of what may be an error by their officer.

Makes me wonder if the same witnesses saw any blue lights or heard any sirens.

I have seen MANY cops do erratic things on the road with no blues or other signals.
They seem to be the worst in cities.

Out in the sticks, they seem to drive more like people.

You know, I read that..and it doesnt matter what the witnesses said..as, they, unlike police officers, ARE NOT TRAINED to estimate speed by eye...

Political thing to "soften the pain", possibly...

Media going after bikes....possibly..

specultation at this point..

The FACT remains, the cop put on his lights, and did a u-turn(going code 3, I ASSume it was a rapid u-turn)... he probably didnt see the bike...

Emergency vehicles are surrbject to the same traffic laws as other drivers... they are SUPPOSED to stop at red lights, before proceeding...etc...

I will say no more on this, as not to instill an arguement...

part of that photo looks distrubingly familiar....

area over rear wheel

first leo killed in accident, biker getting trouble

now biker killed and leo getting hurt
you hope for the officer and bikers family that this does not turn in to a mud slinging fest..

sad............

Similar thing at Myrtle Beach rally this past weekend:

Rider traveling too fast, driver making a U'ey too fast. Luckily this time the rider was able to walk away with only a cut up noggin.

Someone I know was proceeding normally through an intersection in mid-afternoon (long after she had a green light), and was hit broadside by a NYC police car going about 60 - no light, no siren, no horn... in Manhattan.
Strangely, she got several tickets for "failure to yield", "disobey traffic control device" (red light), "unsafe manuever", etc. by cops who arrived after the accident.
At the hearing, the city produced several "disinterested witnesses", who turned out to be:
1. cops, who were not there
2. relatives of cops, who were not there
3. civilian employees of the police union, who were not there
Is the driver/victim black? Drunk? Racing? Driving a POS? Suspended license?
No, she's a Peace Officer and State Supreme Court employee going to the doctor with her mother.

How do you think cops behave when it's YOU...?

Folks let's not turn this article into another sling mud at cops fest............. I know and respect to many good LEO's and some read what is posted here. They have enough to deal with without this starting up again.

Of course! I know many MANY good, smart cops.
I am even related to a couple but it only takes one tool with a badge to ruin your day.
(not to mention your pelvis)
Like I said before, some city cops don't seem to feel that traffic laws apply to them.

I'm not even saying that .05% of the cops are like this but the cops that ARE like this are the ones you tend to remember.

On a typical day, I will pass by perhaps 6 cops but will not really remember them.

On the other hand, I vividly remember:
The time in Boston that a cop ran me off the road ten years ago.
The time a cop ran a red light in Worcester and nearly T-boned me 7 years ago.
The Marlborough monkey that ran a stop sign in front of me and then proceeded to ticket me for screeching my tires and honking. (fought it and won)

Apple, barrel, spoil, one, bad, can, whole, the.

Rearrange these words into a well known phrase or saying.

Cops are human too, & f*** up like everyone else, & if you think driver training is going to change that you're wrong, it may alleviate it some, but that's all.

When it comes right down to it, sometimes shit just happens. Wrong place, wrong time. Cop, civilian, pilot or whatever not paying attention, just doesn't see you, falls asleep... whatever the case, if enough circumstances add up, shit happens.

"I'm not even saying that .05% of the cops are like"

How many places does that decimal need to move to be somewhat like real life?

3 is a good start.

Just what I was waiting for: a well-phrased rebuttal, replete with factual content.

Or a rude, pointless personal ad hominem attack.
Can you tell the difference?

There are reasons why people wish to believe or profess support for police as a group.
One is complete lack of comprehension of the subject. Another is complicity in the bad behavior. I'd like to hear an argument for another choice, but it's been 45 years and still waiting.

So you're saying that a full 50% of cops are bad.

How much experience have you had around police officers? I am related to two, dated one, and grew up with police officers. I know at least four dozen cops. I can't think of more than three who were a55holes. That would lead me to a figure, based on personal experience, of about 5%.

Of course, I have only once been on the receiving end of an arrest, and I fully deserved it, and accepted my punishment. And the guy that arrested me was not an a55hole - he was just doing his job.

So, riddle me this:

How many police officers have you dealt with?

How many of those police officers were a55holes?

How many times have you been on the wrong end of the law?

Directly related to accidents and motorcycles...
We had an officer turn in front of a Motorcyclist last year....

Fact is when you drive nearly 100 miles maybe more a day, five days a week accidents will happen....

The officer rode motorcycles himself... and it was an accident.. plain and simple.

Also.... when an officer is driving all those miles he is trying to see things that are going on in the neighborhood, monitor traffic, and listen and respond to the radio.

Officers are not above anyone... but they do handle and put up with alot of things that the everyday person does n't want to or won't put up with....

My whole issue with this, is it APPEARS that they are trying to make it that all the fault lays in one direction, not the other, or both...

But, I guess we will never know, as I am sure they wont publish the findings on such accident, ESPECIALLY if the officer invovled was at fault...

So, in this instance, I blame the DEPT AND THE MEDIA....

My 2 cents
Chase

F*ck'em if they can't take a joke.

I have to agree that 5%is quite low. I have dealt with some pretty bad officer's and a large percentage have been changed by the type of people they deal with day in and day out. But they tend to get so used to power and those who are attracted to the job are power hungry. I have been in the job and had other officers who just had something stuffed up their bum...To often they are contradicted by those who are really at fault and they have decided they just never are wrong.
