It is sunday morn and as I sat and watch the speed channel I can't help thinking what the hell is going on ie:BMW cup. I know that BUELL and AMA have not seen eye to eye almost forever but when another forign bike comes in to the ama and starts a new class and an american bike maker gets bumped out it seemto me that you guys down south like to take it up the ass. I hear all this talk about you all being a super power but it seems that you can't or won't back the so called bike that won the war, it makes me laugh. I though that the AMA stood for the American motorcycle association, so wheres all the american bikes. I think it's time that you all got off the couch and started to wave your flags outside where other people can see you. I think it is time you put the America back in AMA,so get off your asses and do somthing about it.

A couple of guys were upset before and the issue was beat to death. For roadracing, AMA sucks, Formula USA rocks.

Um, Powerranger, I do believe the American in AMA is for the continent. Last I heard Canada was still part of the North American continent. Unless Canada subscribes only to the FIM rulebook.

Powerranger,

I couldn't agree more...to top it off, many of the bikes were painted red, white and blue...even with stars and stripes. German motorcycles, from the country that won't support us when we are under pressure of war, daring to be painted in our flag colors. We deserve to be sneered at.

The AMA should be the AAMA...Anti-American Motorcyclist Association. Nearly 90% of the field were foreign riders (if you count out the token dog-slow American journalists tossed in for BMW PR.), unlike the old Pro Thunder where the bikes were from mixed countries, but the riders were 90% from North America.

The fastest bikes were 10 seconds off the fastest Pro-Thunder bikes. Hell, they were 8 seconds off the lap times of the restricted 115HP Buells in FUSA this year. It sucked. Oh, yeah, and the race of course was televised, unlike Pro-Thunder where the lack of television kept the serious sponsors out. What a puke!

I was there this weekend. It was more like the BMW Crash Cup. Some racers mentioned how fun the bikes were...but watching/hearing cylinder heads bounce off the pavement and some of the wild antics trying to get the big things slowed down and turned in said otherwise. I heard $$ talking.

The Hal's Buell in Superstock practice was, if anything, easily the loudest bike there. Looks like a portly 250GP bike on the track. Cool.

I thought Rich Oliver was the most amazing racer on the track. He ran off with an amazing lead. To think the AMA Racing considers eliminating 250 GP...WTF are they thinking???

Imonabuss,

Not all Germans agree with their goverment's policy toward the US. In fact, after the anti-American election stuff in Germany, a German town (Berlin?) took out a full page ad in a New York paper stating their affection and appreciation to the US.

If the BMW racers were really Germans and not Americans, I'd say let's not get mad at the sportsman who obviously went way out of their way to show some brotherhood to the US. In fact, I think that was pretty tall of em. Again, the patriotic paint jobs might have had American riders, right?

Just checked the numbers, and in fact the BMW Cup bikes were slower than the fast guys in the old Buell Lightning class, let alone Pro Thunder!

No matter what, it sucked to have the AMA put on this race after claiming that they didn't have time for Pro Thunder as it was too amateur.

Do you think BMW asked to join in the Pro Thunder race? Hell no, they would have had their butts royally kicked. They payed more money and got their own cute little race...with American flags, too. And took home some American money for the foreign riders, and an undeserved reputation as race bikes.

The Cup race was a brotherly action by BMW? I sure can't see it!!! I will never in my life own a BMW again after this.

I didn't say that the cup race was brotherly, but if a Kraut paints his rig with the stars and stripes, it is certainly going out of his way to be supportive. IMO.

Here's where on of the Buells was today in the 15 lap AMA SuperStock race -

27. Dave Estok, Buell, -84.708 seconds

I think it is cool that Kosco is fielding a Firebolt in the AMA and will do alot better at some of the tighter tracks this year.

Rudebike,

Hell no, they were painted that way by the BMW factory to sell more German bikes here. All the American flag bikes belonged to BMW's US distributorship. None of the bikes fielded by the foreign riders were painted this way.

RE. the Superstock race, I talked to a friend who was down there and talked to Estok. Dave said they were trying some experimental parts on the bike to try to go faster, and it didn't run right in the race...it was slower than when it was in FUSA 115 HP trim. They expect to go much faster after getting a chance to get it sorted out. Too little practice time with all the rain.

I laughed my ass off watching those guys bashing into each other , dicing for position , I think it was after the restart two of them smashed cylinder heads together , you could almost feel the impact , yet they remained upright !. I do have respect for the racers and their ability / determination in tossing such heavy bikes around , however I'm pissed that Pro Thunder was discarded by the AMA.

It was comical after one such collision, two bikes lying on the track, one seemed to be leaning casually on its left side cylinder head like a too short kickstand, the other tipped oppositely with its wheels sticking up in the air like a submissive doggie lying on its back. If there is any sport bike made to NOT be road raced, the boxer beemer is it. LOL.

Looked like Kosko was going for some kind of ram air action. I hope they know how little that really helps. The diameter of the corrugated intake runners was WAY to small from what I could judge in JQ's pictures.

I think riding a BMW is one step above riding a bike with training wheels on it, they can't fall down the cylinders ar stoping them from laying flat. I use to have a old shovel head that leened over more on the kick stand. Talk about amateur, it is a wonder all you flag wavers hav not boycotted the ama, wait speeking of AMA that is the first part or AMAteur.Show some backbone.Fight for your rights at home as hard as you would over seas.Show us that you are the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I think the BMW race was pretty cool and had some extremely tight racing - not sure you guys were watching the same race I was. This was a one race deal with "AMA Pro Racing" and will not be on the rest of the years stops - so you can all stop being bitter now.

That BMW race was the best one of the weekend, too bad your bitterness does not let you admit that.

Hal's and Kosco's XB13++RR's were the only two bikes that used the ram air airbox.

But don't ask Kosco or Hal's about that intake design, ask the "factory" that designed and sold it to them ....

But Dave and the KOSCO crew deserve a lot of credit for being the only BUELL out there. Hopefully Speedvision gave them some coverage during the race.

>>>That BMW race was the best one of the weekend, too bad your bitterness does not let you admit that.

My bet is, judging from the names of some of the riders, that the Boxer race was fabulous. A?Scotty Paker/Chris Carr style finish makes any race, regardless of speed, exciting.

I think the resentment lingers as a result of the way the AMA handled the thing so dishonestly and dishonorably. It's a little like trying to explain to your wife that "yes, you ARE sorry about the affair you had, but it WAS great sex" and expecting her to understand.

I, a BMW owner, think the BMW Replica is a good looking bike. I can't seem to forget how much flak the Buells in the Lightning Series have taken in the past for being slower than the Superbikes. Do you suppose BMW's PR agency is braced for similar flak?

Meanwhile, I'm going to see if I can find a tape for the race and start getting myself ready for a big year. I see three HUGE events on the Buell horizon.

By the way. . . GREAT photos!

I must be really dense because I just don't get it...If it's good racing and by that I mean competitive, I love it...And the Boxer Cup certainly was competitive...And entertaining...Much easier to pick up a fallen scooter when it's already partially upright being held up by a cylinder...The ultimate frame slider...And, hey, run down the names of the rider list and tell me that would not be a fun bunch to hang with...

And so was the 600 race...Those four factory bikes are all so close relative to each other...Betcha Big Red sells a bunch this spring and summer...

And motorcycle racing has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with whether or not governments agree with each other...Let's keep it that way!...

And lastly, money talks and etc...Buell has paid in the past for Buell races hoping to get the sales boost to warrant the expenditure...Now BMW just did the same...And boy, was it FUN!...

See Ya!

By most accounts, the BMW racing was one of the highlights of the weekend. And for those that miss Pro Thunder, there is a shared common theme - one brand dominating the winner's circle.

Powerranger,

My X1 still is the bike for me. I don't rage against other makes, but I know what I want in a bike and the X1 is that. Nothing else like it.

It seems uncanny to me that so many have had problems with their Buells though. If they were more reliable, perhaps some would not have switched.

My bike is still bone stock. I am a business owner, so I seem to have less and less time, but I hope to make some performance mods in teh near future. I'm sure I will like my X1 even more after that.

Josh...Sometimes I wonder about this "free speech" thing...I don't think we're going to change Pete's mind, do you?...Here's a try...

Hey Pete...I see by your profile your wish for Buell to bring back the tube frames...A whole bunch of us share that thought with you so when you say

"This is what I am talking about, even on a pro buell site ever one is turning there backs on the buell."

Do you think there is maybe, just maybe, a bit of evidence for us to believe that Buell has turned their back on us?...A lot of us are praying for a more spacious, hard bagged, some weather protection sport-touring Buell...Can we say S3T???...A product does not deserve my approval because of it's origin...It deserves my approval because it meets MY needs...And any business that doesn't recognize this premise is headed for the junk heap of history...What Buell has done is simply made a business decision that they can sell more XB9 types than they were able to sell X1, M2 and S3's...So they find buyers such as Sam with the KC MOB for whom the XB9R comes close (he can also ride the wheels of it)...I hope there are a lot of Sam's and Buell will be successful...I hope this is true because there are a bunch of people working there whom we've all become acquainted and good friends with...

See Ya!

...tangenting...I still think Buell will come out with that dual purpose XB9, a dirt bike/dual purpose Blast, and a XB12 with a T version. All of course with FI sharing the common fuel/oil in the frame we're seeing now. I 'feel' the Court syndrome of chanting Big things on the horizon from Buell. It all makes good business and customer sense :)

This should get moved I am sure.

Powerranger,
Dude lighten up on the caffeine, I hope your not assuming that because we enjoyed some damn good racing against some damn good racers (Tripp Nobles a longtime Harley VR1000 and Buell roadracer included) that somehow we are not patriots. Also as far as big corporations, Harley Davidson is up there with the rest of them. Record profits every quarter yet they cannot afford to go racing. Ducati is in WSBK and MotoGP with full factory efforts as well as supporting numerous other teams - AMA included. Ducati is not making much money either. Racing is in their blood, it use to be in ours. Is it our fault Harley decided to drop the ball on the roadracing scene? They could have turned it over to Buell - they got a new modern engine that just needs a nice Buell frame to go with it. Hey even if Estock came in 27th in the SuperStock race at least they got the balls to be out there with the big boys. Calm down - I don't hear any Buell bashing here - just a bunch of enthusiastic race fans. Jeesh

Poweranger,

You nailed it. It is pathetic to read the same Buell owners who bitched about the slow, one brand Lightning race, and the slow multi-brand Pro-Thunder race giggle like a bunch of schoolgirls over the "exciting BMW race". You importophile poseurs. Go buy one, and I will royally kick your butt on my Firebolt.

I've got to say that if I were running the company at Buell I would pull the plug on all racing. Put on a faster and equally competitive race with Buells and even Buell owners deride it.

And pick on Harley-Davidson for not doing more motorcycle racing? Hell, they went Superbike racing with a cruiser company. BMW, which is way bigger than Harley-Davidson, let alone Buell, and claims to be a sportbike company, doesn't even have the balls to show up for Pro Thunder.

But all you American Americanophobes out there can rest easy...heck a lot of the world hates America too. So keep up the denigration of Buell, I'm sure the import manufacturers roll on the floor laughing at how Buell is treated by it's owners. Maybe you can show them copies of the letters you wrote and get a service job for them..."Oooooh, I get to lick my master's boots in the morning...".
