I have just returned from my ortho appointment. It is somewhat "good news bad news". Good news is that all my injuries are healing faster than expected. My shoulder blades and rotator cuffs have healed beyond expectations. The down side of it all is that they still will not allow me to walk. I have to wait two weeks then gradually build up to walking over the following 4 weeks. The knee fracture is healing beautifully, but the doctor said that I suffered a lot of cartilage and muscle damage in the knee. He also noted that there was a small tear in the "Miniscus". He want's to completely assured that this all heals before he turns me loose. He would not release me for return to duty at this point. I have lost close to 50 pounds since the accident, so I might have to get new uniforms when I get back to work!

I go back to the neurosurgeon on the 20th to get out of the back brace!

Thanks again to EVERY ONE for all the emails, well wishes, etc.
Nick

Somewhere a while back someone posted the equivalent of horsepower "gain" that was achieved by reduction of rider weight.
Just think how FAST your bike's gonna be!
Keep healing, buddy, you'll be back at it before ya know it!

Meniscus; there are (sorta) 2 types of cartilage in your knee. There is the articular cartilage which is like the "bearing surfaces" of your knee joint. Without it you'd be walking bone on bone = lots of pain and grinding noises : ) If you break open a chicken joint you'll see some blue-ish white stuff on the bone ends: that's your articular cartilage. When the articular cartilage wears down you have arthritis.

The other type of "cartilage" really isn't - is your meniscus. That's what people mean when they say they have a torn cartilage. The menisci (there are 2 in each knee) are half moon shaped bands around the edges of your knee joint - triangular in cross section. They help cushion and stabilize your knee joint.

A tear in a meniscus is a bit like a hang nail; you're ok until the nail snags on something - then it hurts. In addition it's believed that a torn meniscus will accelerate wear of the articular cartilage. Removing the torn piece of meniscus is believed minimize this accelerated wear.

There will be a written test ... ;)

Nick, glad to hear you got reasonably good news today. But like your doctor said; give that knee plenty of time to heal.

Henrik

Nick -- I don't see any bad news at all! Good for you! Stay strong, sir -- spirit can do great things -- and thanks for letting us know of your progress -- as you've no doubt figured out, ya got a friend or two round here

Henrik -- ignore that grump Kansan -- you explained, clearly, briefly, and in language that even a silverback can grok, what a number of doctors have mumbled at me about since 19 . . . .er, for a long time -- thanks for your discourse ;-}

Nick, congrat's. Sounds like all is going well in the recovery. Make sure you listen to the Doc. I didn't last year and paid the price so this time around I'm taking it slower in my recovery. Of course, you have it worse than I did. Point of my story, the Doc knows best. Again, glad to hear you are doing a lot better, talk to you later, take it easy.

Thanks guys...and girlie! Not wanting to risk soundnig like an Oscar award reception speech.. but I have to say just what Crusty was getting at...my fast recovery would not have been so fast if not for ALL the positive energy and support.

Henrik: You explained it better than my ortho doc! Send him the bill! He said that if he could place his "concern" about future problems with the knee on a scale of 1-10 it would be a "0" as long as I do things right during the recovery. Trying to not walk is as hard as giving a fat kid a bag of oreos and telling him not to eat! Thank goodness for my wifenurse, she is keeping me in line.

Odie: I think he'll be plenty happy with that. Do I get a commission on the sale? (just kidding)

Everyone just know that I appreciate each and every "get well" that comes along. I am definitely looking forward to next year at Daytona and the 2nd annual BuellBQ! I just wont ride during february!

Thanks again,
Nick

Nick - My wife & I are really glad to hear you are doing well. I forgot to tell you but we went up to St. Augustine and stayed on the beach for a few days after we left you. Nice place. Nowhere near as crazy as Daytona. Say hi to Sammy for us.
