I remember back in the early 90's there was an endurance team running an old FZ600, when they had air-cooled motors. They had it punched out to about 900cc's. Also, I wonder if anyone blew the dust of an old Kawasaki S1 how it would do. (with new suspension & tires, and brakes)

Since the S1 was a 3 cyl 250cc 2-stroke, I doubt it would be competitive.

Perhaps you mean a Z1. The original 4-cyl superbike.

The S1 was a factory-sold 1-liter superbike sold by Kawasaki as an AMA prepped superbike. I think they sold it 1981 & 1982. Here's a link:

Oh... a KZ S1,... the original Eddie L replica.. that's different than an S1.

Kaw had the triple series, S1 S2 S3 + S4, then the H1 + H2

That's why they sell the 600cc version. There is no reason to build the 750cc bike other than the rules. The rules changed, so the bike will not be needed anymore

I can see this for the ZX7, due to the fact that it has not been updated in some time, and realistic updates have not taken place since 92 or so, i think this could be let go, but i doubt that Suzuki would drop the GSXR 750, they sell to many of them, no sence in dropping a product that sells, but i dount think Honda has had a 750 for some time so it could come true, and if you really think about it, those are the only 750's out there that are in reach of the average person, so who knows, As far as insurance is concerned, i think its a moot point, displacement based insurance is a farce but most younger riders really dont think about it, plus with monthly insurance its kinda the cost of doing business, so again dont be surprised to see Kawi drop the ZX7

Jose, do you know anywhere I could find the lap times that would compare the XB's against the boxer cup machines? Looking to see what the difference in times would be & which would do better.

Yes but i really dont think thats much of a sport bike, maybe a sport cruiser, but i dont think you will see many on the track, the VFR 800 is closer, but that has gone from a pure sport bike to a sport tourer, so really they dont make a 750 sport bike, but i have to admit it would be cool to see V-4 Magna in race trim

And i made the show, and while i thought it was fun, it was not as good as last year, but i did get to see the tornado, so it was worth it, i thought Harley was the most disappointing, i kinda thought they would have a bigger display considering its the 100th and all, maybe there putting there money toward the party and not the show, another cool thing was i got to meet Peter Egan and get a copy of his book signed, along with Ricky Gladson(i caught him coming out of the restaurant so no line and he stopped and was glad to see some one who recognized him away from the Kawi both, nice guy, but my wife thought i was nuts walking up to a total stranger and blurting out congrats and all and wishing him good luck in the year to come)
Over all it was OK, worth 8 bucks, but not as good as years past. the other thing i noticed was the lack of money invested in trinkets to hand out, in past years i have walked away with tons of stuff, but slim pickings this year, oh well the fist sign of spring has now past almost riding season

I'm sure the Pro Thunder Buell, and probably even a Thunderbike/Lighting Spec Buell would go faster around the track than the BMW. They tested there in December but it was in the wet, I don't remember what the times were like. But the BMW's should go faster than the old 883 road racers.

But they will be racing on Sunday March 8th at Daytona and you'll be able to see it on Speedvision. Jay Springsteen, Randy Mamola and some other stars will be aboard, it should be fun to watch.

I thought there were two versions: (1) the "real" one with the number plates, fancy brakes, slicks, cut-off alternator cover, etc and (2) the street version, which was a KZ1000 with green paint & a kerker pipe. Don't remember a 750, tho.

In reference to the comment "I think the S1 would need a frame as well" ... the "new" kawa 1000 has a steel frame, plus the ZX12R uses a cradle frame. Its possible to increase the levels of stiffness in the frame by "gusseting", which is allowed in the FUSA rules. While it probably wouldn't be able to reach the stiffness levels of current frames (without some weight penalty) it should be possible to make it better. And, if you were running a souped-up 1200cc Kaw, the most important thing to do would be to make sure it was pointing in a straight line when opening the throttle. :)

I remember a story told to me by a retired racer, about his last race. He was racing a KZ750, with some head work, 13:1 pistons, Bassani pipe, and Mikuni's. The last one was a sprint race the first year of the GSXR750. Started mid-pack, passed everyone in the infield (pocono), and by the time turn 1 came round he was in last place. Did the same thing on Lap 2; on lap three he pulled in the pits off the front straight & parked the bike. Old Kawasaki's didn't handle that bad.

I love steel frames...but the standard cradles used in a few current retro-rockets are lacking compared to trellis and geodesic frames. I also love the way the old air cooled "superbikes" sound...sure have a nasty bark compared to liquid cooled bikes. No matter what kind of pipe a LQ'd bike has...they just don't make that symphony of mechanical sound.

Having raced one of the old tube frame 1000cc Kawasakis, I'd sure rather be on my XB9R out on the track! Don't believe that they weren't bad handling, 'cause they were! Why do you think they got beaten in Superbike by Ducatis and Guzzis that were down 40HP on them? And the old Ducatis and Guzzis didn't hold a candle in handling to a Firebolt!!!

The FUSA Thunderbike rules have been this way for a while: some bikes like this have shown up at Thunderbike races, and they get blown away. For a reality check on the advances in handling, compare lap times from the era when those bikes were competitive to the lap times of today. They weren't even remotely close to Pro Thunder times, for example.

Sure, elapsed time is as useless as trying to compare lap times between bikes using Superbike Slick tires and bikes using DOT labeled grooved racing tires, but that doesn't stop people from using them does it?

Um, when did they get beat by ducati's & guzzi's? I remember pre-851 ducati's as being LOUD & SLOW. Even now, Ducati racing seems to only be for the very wealthy...

Actually JQ, until the HP gets up to superbike level there really isn't that much difference in the performance of slicks versus DOT race tires. And even then, the difference should be well understood. Comparing average lap times between races does involve a BUNCH of variables, like red flags/restarts, lapped traffic...

For the very wealthy... and the very fast. They won Pro Thunder. They've won WSB more times than I can remember. They do okay in the CMRA too.
