not heard of anyone who pities them . . . .sorry for their loss, and the loss suffered by their families, certainly . . .

6 minutes is a long time under some circumstances . . . not sure I want to know all they said and did during that time . . . . like eavesdropping on someone, you know?

>>>>>>>>>>>>But the control of the re-entry is via computer as things happen too fast for a "pilot" to fly it manually

Yes but like I said If that sensor was damaged the computer read it wrong and boom.
Also He was a rookie and what if he freeked out. Cause there is NOTHING you can do once you start re-entry. There is not enough fuel left to burn to get out of the Earths pull.
Also rember the shuttle orbits bottom side out, IE the tiles are facing the harshness of space. There might have been a number of things that could of damaged the tiles other than isulation falling during take off. Plus from what I have learned about the shuttle it can survive with 2/3 of it's tiles. (or some number close to that)

That's why they're looking at the c/f stuff on the leading edge of the wing.

er, spidey, with all respect to freedom of speech and all that, suggesting the the pilot's lack of experience (that you know of) contributed to the crash is, ehm, a little outa line, I"m thinkin . . .. .

it's a little like my say that you and Whatever MIGHT have a love child hidden in a Hooters up in Newfoundland somewheres . . . . . . . . ya know?

I don't mean to bash the guy at all I am just approaching this like a investigator trying not to rule out anything. But usally the simplest answer is the right one. I know the program these guys go through is a hard one and takes years to acomplish, but I also know the human factor involved some people take on death like it was nothing some panic, some freeze up. Like I said I am just trying to not rule anything out. More than likley it was a computer problem with the damaged wing sensor.

P.S. who told you about my love child ;)

There is no way in hell anyone will be put in charge of flying a shuttle without hundreds & hundreds of hours of practice. They are all accomplished military pilot veterans & are trained for every contingency. Sometimes it comes down to perhaps 2 phrases I can think of.

It was Gods will

or

Shit Happens.

One thing I hope to God it isn't is what happened with the Challenger. Even though the top executives new that launching that Shuttle was a suicide mission they did it anyway cause the had already waited long enough.

I'm thinkin like Mike here . . .. . .speculation is just that .. . . I've no opinion about the crash cause I simply don't know . . . . I'll wait for the pros to figure it out . .. .

Wahtever was crowing about it over on Sacborg earlier ;-}

To put in my 2 cents worth, I feel badly for all the astronauts and their families and said a prayer for them all.

I don't believe for a minute that a rookie pilot might have freaked ! Those guys are too well trained, and the best of the best ! If they possessed anything in their personalities that indicated they wouldn't hold up under the most intense pressure, they would not have made the cut !!

I think they call it cabin fever in some regions, but since I don't live in a cabin I would'nt know the symptims, besides I would'n't know the simptons 'cause I don't live in a cabin, plue i haven't got a clue what cambin fever simpsons are like since I Don't live in one, plus like someone said some time ago cabin ferver sets in around now and people get a little ornerny becuase of cabin fever.

I htink i Need to step ourtsyde for a mobment or tree.

Hope I get my bike together before the nice weather hits. Got the clutch cable & exhaust sorted out last night. Still a little wiring to do & then it needs paint. Still need to get chrome fork sliders & I am pretty sure that the left fork tube is tweaked. Just doesnt look right, so when I take the front end apart I gotta spend some more $$$ I dont have.

Fucking Shit Bomber,

I go away for an afternoon and you start rumors !!! ;) If I was having a 'love child' with anyone I sure as shit wouldn't broadcast it here... You guys need to really get a life !!! LMFAO !!! ;)

Also,

It is very very very easy to criticize NASA and/or the contractors. Unless you are an Engineer for NASA or one of the contractors I say (In my humble opinion) YOU SHOULD JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP ... (Nothing personal).

Speculation serves no use...if you do not have the understanding or the facts... You are of course entitled to your opinions, but bashing the professionals at this point is pretty useless dontcha think?

Bomber,

When are we going to work on that 'love child' of ours ??? ;)

Char
PS They had over 12 hours of coverage on the Shuttle Explosion up here in the northwoods, on all three channels, it was pretty painful to watch...

I've worked with a designer up here who spent time working at a NASA engineering contractor site in Texas designing modules and containers and other assorted items for inclusion in flights and experiments. He was heading back to work with them again a few years ago. The details he told me about what they had to do and check and recheck and verify in the design process made designing a Harley look like an exercise in kindergarden by comparison. Nothing on the Shuttle is haphazard.

Mike,

"cambin fever simpsons" ??? You are crackin' me the fuck up !!! Is that like a northwoods version of the Simpsons: Bart sticks his foot in an ice fishin' hole and Lisa's binky freezes in her mouth... while Homer is snowed in at the donut shop ?

Gotta work,

Look in the corner, see that snow shovel over there all dripping wet, Homer isn't snowed in, he shoveled himself in and climbed in through the window. ;) Detective work at its best. :)

What happened to Marge & Grandpa?

But now I understand why the roads never get plowed....because Barney is to busy getting himself plowed at Mo's Tavern
