Okay, so what you do...you take a length of rope, tie it to a wheel spoke, wind it in a spiral around the tire thru the rim continue all the way around the wheel and tie it off to the spoke at which you started. Voila'...motorcycle snow chains!
Dino, not sure how the CHP would view such a contraption, and i had had enough "close encounters" on this trip (ask Court to remind me to tell you sometime...) without adding yet another. : )

I have been through several serious blizzards on sport bikes and it has never been a problem.
Skyguy, i've ridden in snow before (altho it's been awhile, and not on my FJR). i was curious how it would do, hence i ignored the flashing "Chains Required 32 Miles Ahead" sign in Bridgeport and forged on.

Conway Summit (8138 feet) near Mono Lake wasn't too bad (altho visibility sucked), but once past Lee Vining conditions went quickly from bad to REALLY bad. the snow you see in the pix was so slippery it was hard to even walk in (it seemed like the roadbed under the snow might have been frozen), and the FJR didn't like the stuff even a teeny little bit.

i had to gingerly turn around and ride the wrong way in the southbound lanes of 395 for a ways to make it over to the northbound lanes, and hung around just long enough to get a few pix and then retreated into Nevada, trading major snow for mondo rain.

this made about the tenth time on this 2700-mile ride that i encounted fairly severe winter-like conditions, in four states (CA, OR, WA and NV), and i also had to take a major detour in Oregon as the road from Estacada to Detroit was closed altogether due to snow, which, alas, i didn't discover until i got all the way to Estacada.

Sure enjoyed your visit FB--glad you made it home safe and sound.
me, too, and me, too! i had a GREAT visit, Mom, looking forward to next time. er, any chance we could move your birthday up to August??? : )

now then, at the risk of appearing to condone certain miscreant behavior on this thread...

...Fast Ferris: Ferris TopFueller.

sigh.

You Bad Weather Bikers have such cool acronyms attached to your pics. Must be some sort of Biker Code. Lemesee.... in the Ferris snow picture, SHIT must stand for "Snow Hampers Interstate Travel" ...or could it be "Sure Having Interesting Time"...or was it "Some Handling Issues Today".....Hey, I'm sure I'll get it figured out soon.

OH OH!!
I wanna' play!!
I'm 40 miles from nowhere, on a nice little 2-lane today...sky is getting darker...I am going faster! Trying to outrun it...didn't realize I was running across it...not away from it. I could see blue sky in front of me the whole time!
Next thing you know I have to start getting back under 100 because the hail REALLY hurts when you are going that fast!!!
I was gonna' stop, but I was already wet, so I pushed on. 38 miles later, I finally out ran it.
Imagine a little arrow pointing to that red bloch, that says....you are here!

I've watched cars spinning off the road from the seat of my old Kawa ZL600... Haven't had the chance to try out the Buell yet.
