Any experts out there on Home Theater? I'm currently running a Denon 3802 into: Boston CRC center (8 yrs old) Cerwin Vega SE280 (12" woofer, 12yrs old) Boston CR5 bookshelf surrounds It's no where near timbre matched and the little CRC is pretty out of place. It was ok until I got the 3802, DVD player and a DolbyD 5.1 compatible satilite receiver. I went and listened to Boston's VR MC center ($500) VR-M50 ($600/pr) book shelf and 800-series Sub ($600) and wasn't real impressed. I'm currently taking home the JBL Studio series (SCenterII, S312II, S38II, S?? Sub) for testing as I liked it in the store and in the reviews. I'm thinking about the SCenter($130), and either the S38II(299) or S312II ($480) (or S310II - $400) along with a SVS 25-31 or 20-39PCi ($550/600) sub. Shooting for <$1300 for the front setup, I'll do the back later. Any comments on JBLs? Any better way to get good sound and great room-shaking bass for <$1300 delivered? | ||

i have jbl fronts and they're great, my center is a bose 101, rear acoustic research, the timber of all the speakers is slightly different but for the $ to go out and get a complete set isn't worth it-i use that to buy more cool stuff for the cycle! i'm sure you'll be happy with jbl they're reasonably priced and sound great. | ||

I have Definitive Technology speakers all the way around. Towers and center in front, each with powered 8" subs, smaller surrounds in back without subs. I highly recommend these speakers and have been very satisfied. | ||

look at some Polk audio stuff. the house my friend lives at has a 12 sub with its own amp, and four satellites in the top corners all around, four total. its an old house, so ALL the doors and windows rattle, and it sounds clear all around. i know jbl is good stuff, but i know Polk is pretty good too. youre doing the right thing by looking around. Harmon kardon makes some good stuff too. log on to the crutchfield website and order a catalog or buy one at a newstand, they sell stuff really cheap and have a plethora of brands and models. find what you like in the store and order it from them to save a few $$$. i use the Harmon Kardon system with my computer and run RCAs to a pioneer receiver that powers an orion cobalt 15 in sub in a bandpass box. PLENTY'o'bass. gets the ladies where they wanna be every time. great for waking up the girls on the floor below when im watching porn at full volume drunk at 4 am. | ||

boston home stuff sucks! You might as well buy bose.Jbl ok for best buy. mnk rule they not super pretty but sound outstanding. energy makes nice stuff. bw are great but pricey. there are so many good speaker out there. but jbl and boston are not it. definetly waunt to buy all 4, the same. | ||

monitor audio...is a good way to go...sound really good...mostly hifi stores...I love mine. http://www.soundcity.com usually has decent deals on the silver series stuff...very nice stuff. You would probably have to spend 15-1700dollars to get a full system w/sub...once you listen to them... no jbl or boston will do...good luck. | ||

I went to Ultimate Electronics and demoed Monsters Inc, Diana Krall (Live in Paris), Collective Soul (Music in High Places), and music CDs (24k Rykodiscs: "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" ) Snoop Dogg and Metallica all on $15,000+ worth of Krell and Martin Logan audio with a $12,000 plasma TV. Then went home and did the same with my setup (above), some Energy Encore, Boston, and the JBL Studio series. I'm going with the JBLs. The Martin Logan stuff may be better but I'll be damned if it's $10000+ better (4 JBL S38IIs, SCenter and SVS sub comes to $1300. The ML center channel was $2500). Hmm should I update my RAN profile to add Home Theater?  | ||

You could be right. Let's face it "Buena Vista Social Club" had some very accessible material and his trip through Cuba, gathering the likes of 77 year old pianist Ruben Gonzalez, was sure to make the heaviest feet move. I'm as excited about his continuing "projects" as I am the music I'll be hearing when it arrives today. But, then...bear in mind that I am a guy who spends a disproportionate amount of time continuing to wear out my 33-1/3 LP of Cal Tjader "Live a Grace Cathedral" and, to complicate things, it lives next to my original, and heavily scared, vinyl of the Kingsmen doing "Louie, Louie". Hmmm, I have Three Dog Night's "Never went to Spain" (forget the album title) and Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen on vinyl among other things. I also have an old Mother's of Invention tho it's warped - or is that how it's supposed to sound?  | ||

Bomber; second that motion! Nice feature from the Ry Cooder recordings is that, because of the semi-acoustic kind of music he makes, even the oldest recordings sound GREAT! -less amplification=keeping that "edge" or "crisp sound"- Too bad then that, arguably, his best album -Paris, Texas- has a horrible wind blowing all through it! Try Rickie Lee Jones' "Pop Pop" album also, if You've got the chance. One of my personal favourites, for that special sound it has to it. -"love junkyard", "coming back to me"- But then, I'm lucky enough to be able to listen to these through an Audio-Innovations 500 tube-amp, Sonus Faber speakers and Micromega cd-player... Check out Magnepan before you buy but make sure you have LOTS of power on tap to run them. They'll also bring to light any dificiencies in the rest of your system or the source material (like old cassette tapes). | ||

Josh, I know I'm late, but: I use an ever so slightly older Denon 3801 (shoulda got the 5801) and B&W CDM series rear and center speakers. The tweeters are the same ones used in the Nautilis series bad boys. If I had to do it over I would have used the center for the rears as well. You get one more driver and about 10 Hz lower frequency response. The extra driver moves more air for a better soundstage and increses the SPL. Surround price: I got them for $450 each, retail is $600. Stay away from small speakers, they just can not fill up a room. Too easy to hear exaactly where they are. I'm a firm believer in moving lots of air. Kind of like the difference of being on stage with a wall of Mesa Boogie stacks or a 1x12 combo amp. I haven't gotten into 6.1 and 7.1 yet so I've got 2 dicreet channels wasting away on the Denon. The mains are DBX Soundfield V's and a Paradigm servo 15 sub. The DBXs are old and weren't pricy by any means, but I love their sound and I'm keeping them until I find someone willing to let go of theit B&W 801 Matrix series. I don't care for the Nautilis series sound, too pure to the point that it sounds thin. | ||

I've got the extra 2 piped into a 4-way Monster switch box that routes it to the living room (Mission 701) and patio (Boston Voyager Pro) speaks. When I goto 6.1 I'll run the extra speakers to the switch box as well. My only problem so far? The JBLs I bought didn't sound like the ones I demo'd at home (too "tinny" ) and I had to swap 'em out. Loving it now tho. I wound up slowly turning down the sub over the last several weeks and boy does it all sound good. Now to get the 3802 connected to my PC network for MP3s... |
