I was told by a fellow Bueller at the last ASBN meeting that Buell was going to drop a 1200 cc engine in the new breed. My thought is, why then would anybody buy the underpowered Hoover vacuum motor that's in it now if the 1200 is coming (June 03?). Is this really going to happen? Jon |

Where I work, there is a driver who comes in from time to time and admires my bike, a very long winded fellow. Anyway he says he is a large stockholder of H-D. Well the BS alarm has never really been set off by him, but he said that at one meeting the V-Rod engine and Buell were mentioned in the same sentence and I thought, "How nice that would be." Well even more interesting lately I have seen much about the old/new Nova project from H-D. Wouldn't that be a really cool love connection? http://www.riderreport.com//output.cfm?id=144217 |

>>Buell had an first dibs on the motor & turned it down.<< Unless the VRSC powerplant is overweight and really wide, I can't imagine that being correct. I really thought H_D would introduce that VRSC based streetfighter concept bike for their 100th anniv. |

Don't forget the VRSCA motor is a wet sump motor so what do we do with the swing arm? |

seems to me it would be the perfect powerplant for the sport-tourer....might also tie the brands together more in the PR perspective |

Oooh, yeah, a sport tourer! Let's see, take an $18,000 stripped bike that weighs about 600lbs, add saddlebags, fairing, big comfy seat, more suspension travel, electric hookups for touring stuff, and ABS. Oughta give us a 670 lb $22,000 bike...I'll bet the folks will line up in rows...short rows mind you... |

I would kill for a Buell firebolt that could keep up with an rc51. All we need is the right power plant. I really think that a 100hp at the back wheels on a firebolt would make Buell extremely competitive. I would trade my bolt in tomorrow for one like this. I would even be willing to pay a little more for it! HHmmmm can you say High County Buell!!!!!!!!! |

Dyna, Rick called it right. Erik told me the same thing back in 1997. 'Sides, isn't oil a liquid? Greg |

The oild cooler on the XB's is definately not the same as an oil cooled engine..ala Suzukis katana series. Its there simply because the compact styling of the bike required it. Cannot get proper airflow in & around the engine to allow the air to cool efficiently, so at least attempt to cool the oil. An oil cooled designed motor is completely different from an air cooled engine with an oil cooler. |

Dyna does the the XB not squirt oil at the bottom of the pistons? I think this is what people mean by oil cooling and is kinda like what Suzuki used to do. |

Imonabus; well, if you drop the weight and the price a bit (and maybe the ABS) and give it a quarter fairing. Never mind the longer suspension - not necessary. Add well made and well integrated luggage option (really ... *well* is the key word here) and easy adjustability of ergos (bars and pegs both), and you'd have a worthy successor to the S2/S3. Emphasis on the *Sport* in sport touring, and I might be one of those (few??) in line. Henrik |

The xb's compact design does not cause it to need an oil cooler. It is very well air cooled with all of the shrouding and the electric fan. All of this and the oil cooler are just going a step further in cooling the motor compared to the older buells and sportster engines. The oil squirters do a great job at cooling and lubricating the pistons and cylinders. The down side to this is that the oil gets hot. This is why Buell added an oil cooler. If you check the temperature of an old buell engine compared to a new xb engine after running it real hard, you will see that the average temp. differs about 40-50 degrees. Buy or borrow a raytek temp gun and check for yourself. I was amazed. the oil temp is also about 30 degrees cooler. This is probably why the new motors will have a good reliability record! |

The oil accounts for a large amount of cooling even in a purely "aircooled" motor...up to 40%...with an oil cooler even more. |

Henrik, The VRSC has minimal lean angle, far from what would be required for a sport tourer, even with foot forward peg position that gains ground clearance. So, much longer suspension would be required for more normal sporting ergonomics. Lightening it while adding parts and features isn't likely. So what would you be getting? Not a sport tourer by the definition of the Buell S2 or the Ducati ST. But maybe you are onto something. The sport touring market has miniscule sales world wide anyway. I mean products like the Aprilia Futura and the Ducati ST4 sell in the hundreds, not thousands, so don't expect to see many more...no one wants them, and all the companies except BMW and Honda lose their butts on them! But, based on what you are saying, perhaps a sport custom tourer is what people want. Might as well just buy a VRSC and add a 1/4 fairing and aftermarket luggage. You wouldn't have a sport tourer, but it would be cool. You'd be into it for maybe $20,000, and you could do it today! |

Imonabuss, The VROD was made with a modular frame design. It seems to me that Harley did that with some other models in mind. I doubt if sport touring is one of those options but a touring bike should be possible. What do you think? Greg |
