the "larger" a person is has an effect also. as surface area is a squared function, volume is cubed, so volume increases at a much more rapid rate. which, in turn, leads to less surface area per lb, and less heat loss per lb | ||

Hey Blake, I agree with Spidey, ditch the Anon post capability. Up here on the island we are used to being cold but when its warm watch out we go mad. From what Charlotte describes Wisconsin must be very similar to here. And M2me, I have a small Toro Snowblower that clears the garage pretty quick. I don't know how I could live without that thing at this point in time. And the snowman smiles every time I go by!!!!!!!!ha ha ha | ||

Newfie, I don't just not clear snow from in front of the garage, I pile snow there! Why? In the first place, it's just a convenient place to dump snow and in the second place, it discourages any thief who might think about stealing something. I live in a four-plex condo building and I have two separate single-car garages. Sometimes I wish I had a two-car garage but for storing my bike or anything else for the winter it works great. Charlotte, why don't you just post a picture of yourself? You could end all of the fantasizing that's going on and I think everybody would be better off.  | ||

Michigan. I have declared the riding season officially over. The cover has been put on. My hats off to you die hards that are able to keep doing it. Does the board want to take up a pool to contribute a liner for my vanson and one of those cool heated vests? lol. Visiting GA this weekend gave me a glimpse of hope, reality hit me hard though upon returning to MI. I hate this state. | ||

I was out last night around 11 pm for a bit, it was sorta chilly. Found out the Vanson pants I got don't really like to fit over my still swollen leg from my accident in the spring. Now that sucks. Nice pants, still hanging in the closet. Hope I don't have to go chaps. Alex | ||

It is at the Marriot in Warren, it is more of a sales/training (like I need it ) meeting. So basically Me and a few dozen other Buell guy's get to go make fun of this used RV salesman with a degree. LOL I am actually not sure who is leading the meeting, but if it is the guy who came to my shop. LORD HELP US ALL | ||

Although i think i need to get a set of vansons too, along with all the other crap i want to get and keep talking Tony's ear off about. i went out riding last night too... got to 75, and said... NOPE! just back roads for me. but i must admit there is nothing better than a nice long night ride. Could have been a bit warmer but that is ok wasn't many cars out at 10:00 so it was really nice. Well, my girl is 5'6" and 120 and freezes her ass off below 70. I am 5'7" and 180...fairly muscular, and freeze my ass off below 70. That said I've rode in the winter...at temps below 30 degrees...and speeds hovering around the triple digits. Why? 'cause I'm always running late, and have no other transpo. Once I did about 1/2 mile down a freshly "slushed" steep hill in high crosswinds. I traveled sideways the entire length...barely stopping in time for the intersection at the bottom. There were a few cages that got blown off...so I saw it as no small feat. So, I'm not too fond of cold weather riding...and hope I never have to endure that trash again! I feel for you cold weather riders. | ||

Williston, ND was 7 below zero this morning! Now that's cold for October. Hey, what's wrong with chaps? I wore mine last Saturday and I wore them around Thanksgiving time 2001. They really help to keep you warm. It is funny to see some of these Harley riders with their leather vests, fingerless gloves and chaps in the middle of summer when it's 85 degrees out. I will sometimes see groups of six or seven of them and they all have their chaps on. It looks like their whole leather outfits cost as much as my bike. Weird. | ||

C, I don't live in Williston, ND I live in Minneapolis, MN. It's in the 30's here and I still didn't ride. But if I did I'd be wearing chaps! I don't care what people think (I bought a Buell didn't I?). Chaps really keep you warm. I don't parade around all the time in them, but when it's cold they make a big difference. One nice thing about chaps is, unlike riding pants, they are easy to take off when you get to your destination. Just make sure you're wearing jeans underneath! I'm not gay and if people want to think otherwise because I sometimes wear chaps that's their problem. | ||

The only problem with chaps is what they don't protect from the cold. Still looking for a leather cod piece. Maybe I'll just put a hole in the seat so the rear cylinder head can keep me warm. Actually leather conducts cold and retains it pretty well and doesn't keep me warm below 40 deg. Frozen knees suck. I use my ski suit for anything under 40 deg. | ||

Rick As for the speeds on the cold days, I'm with ya on the near triple digits stuff. Last year I was taking one of my bikes over to be stored in about 20 degree weather and discovered that riding at 60mph really wasn't any warmer than riding at 90-95mph. (Makes sense since wind chill isn't actually a change in temp, just a correlation to a rate of heat transfer.) So the thinking became "I'm barely any colder going faster so why not just fly and get out of it sooner?" The cold days kind of snuck up on me so the gear that that Ihad available to me was my deer hunting clothes. Before anybody says anything about protective gear, I think it was safe to assume that no matter it's made out of, it will take a while to wear through 6 layers of clothes. | ||

I don't know how this all relates to towel throwing but I look at chaps as marginal protection, saves the legs in a skid but not the posterior portions, but relatively better than bare denims and easier to get out of than full leather pants once at work. I plan to get proper leather riding pants once I can afford them and have the patience to wait for them. In the mean time I'll wear chaps on cold or friskey days. And in the other mean time I'll keep setting aside pennies for the Aerostich suit. Chaps are just another level of protection, especially when they're on sale at less than half price. Charlotte, One of the magazine web sites had published a skid test where they tested the asphalt skid resistance to various materials, or maybe it was the Aerostich web site that has the test posted. A pair of denim jeans didn't hold up well. Kevlar reinforced denim jeans did better. The Cordura type blended materials did well to some extent. And good old fashioned heavy race weight properly tanned leather did the best. That thin fashion-glove-weight leather used in fashion pants was about as good as Saran Wrap as far as I'm concerned. Look at impact points and slide points if you want to buy your gear with the proper mindset. The old saying goes, dress for the fall not for the weather. Impact pads and flex joints are good, as well as knee pucks or sliders if you get over or down that far while riding, but shiney untouched knee pucks look goofy to me so either just get padded knees in your pants or get down on the track and scrub things in (but don't crash, crashing sucks). I don't know nothing so don't listen to anything I just typed and verify for yourself. | ||

Uwgriz, I found also that with the little flyscreen you get a bigger pocket of air behind it at higher speeds...glad I don't have to deal with that kinda weather anymore! Now it's just a lot of rain to contend with, and that's just fine by me. | ||

X1glider... Concerning your knees. Go to the local sporting goods store and check out the neoprene knee braces. I bought the ones without the hole and they do an excellent job in the 30 and 40 degree weather we have been having. I suggest buying them big for fitting over long john's and to provide comfort on the pegs. Bill | ||

It's true, wind chill has no additional effect beyond about 45mph: must be a 'boundary layer' thing. If you're freezing your tail off, as somone already suggested, wick it up and get it over with.... FWIW, I like my chaps. They're handy for cool mornings, pack well, are easy to don/remove.... and the ladies dig 'em. Lornce | ||
