I posted this earlier in the KV, but received no responses.

I have a '98 M2 that I would like to switch out the tail section with a '98 S1's tail. I saw a picture here showing this done, but I didn't like the way the frame showed under the seat section. Has anyone else done this? I don't mind cutting the frame, but I don't have access to a welder.

Another question (and I know some of you are tired of this one): I want to put a tach on my M2. Will any tach work? I know the speedo's have changed from a mechanical drive to electronic, but what about the tach's. I saw a guys bike at the local HD with an Autometer tach on his M2, but it was a '00 bike.

Thanks again,
Kevin

Kevin,
It's not a problem to fit the S1 tail onto your M2 if you don't mind a little cutting... I sed a complete kit from RRC in Germany and it worked quite well. All I had to do was to cut (no welding) the frame just behind the point where the tubes are welded together. Take a look in my profile or take a look in the "cool Buell pics", I posted a couple of pics in the beginning of this week;-)

Good luck/ Jonas

The website for RRC is r-r-customizing.de

I got the same carbonfiber tail section Bull has.Its a very nice piece. Not sure if your rear of frame is the same as 1999+later though.Price depends on Euro to Dollar but mine ended up costing about $510.+$38.shipping last winter.(seat not included in that price)

If you've had a chance to see an S1 frame with the tail removed, you see the top frame tubes curve upwards(starting a little behind the oil tank).I don't know if the 98 M2s are the same angle. On the 99+later M2s these upper tubes are flat,no upward angle.Anyways, before i got the rrc tail i did have an S1 tail on my 2000 M2.I described a little of it in 2 or 3 posts,K.V.-bodywork,archive through May 29,2002.

In that conversion,i left the rear frame tube loop on,with the rrc you just cut it off,so you could cut it off when using the real Buell S1 tail too i suppose. If your 98 style frame curves up like the S1 though you may be in luck and not have to do much.

It is the same frame. They put 98 M2 body work on Leslie's new M2. If you do not want to cut your frame i suggest this method. the smaller M2 section.

I remember pictures of an M2 with an S1 tailesction...I couldn't find them, tho. The frame tubes were partially visible from the back and sides. It was fairly ugly compared to a real S1. With some simple fabrication I'm sure it'd work better.

You are talkin major frame mods to get rid of the side bars. Unless you get one like Bull has.

Forget the S1, drop a yamaha TZ tail section on from Airtech. Granted, the seat is 1/2" foam rubber, but I am sure someone could come up with something for a longer ride.

Dave,
How much fabrication did it take to put that tail section on? I like the look!

I originally put a Custom Chrome Tach on my '99 Em Too then switched to a '98 S1 Tach, no problem. It triggers off of the coil so even on a '98 it should be the same.

First, I can't take credit for the tail section, I bought it that way. However, there are three brackets bent out of angle iron, one on top and one on each side. Then there is a layer of padding that is underneath the seat area. That's it. You can then move all your electronics up under the tail section off of the side of the bike. Otherwise they will be out in the open. Since that picture, I have added a 1999 R1 taillight and some flush mount turnsignals. With the high rearsets, the seat isn't even too bad since most of the weight is on my legs.

Snowdave,
I like the look of that tailsection. I'll have to check into doing that. I have an s1 section that I just bought off the board and I want to see just how much frame modification is necessary. If it's a matter of cutting and rewelding, I'm sure I can find someone to do it- I just don't know how many parts I'll have to remove from the bike in order to accomplish this.

JST,
Thanks for the information. I smell another project for me.

Thanks everyone.

Kevin

I have done this to my M2 any fabricator can do this.Bring the tail section to them it's pretty cut and dry what needs to be done ounce the S1 tail section is resting on the bike. You will also need the tail light houseing because yours is different.Theres a picture of my bike on American sportbikes web sight under customer rides. This work costed me about $300.00 and the guy that owns the company also owned a 98 S1.Hope I was some help kevin. Thanks Rick I wanted a S1 when I bought this bike but could'nt find a 1998 S1 with real low milage on it so I looked at the M2.2000 was the first year the M2 was thunderstormed much like the 98 S1 so that was a starting point. The bike was also pictured BattleTwin next to a 427 Cobra before it had the S1 tail on it,just the inverted 98 fork on it. Dana.

FYI,
'99 was the first year for Thunderstormed M2s. Like the tail though. That's the look I'm going for if I can get some one to fab up the tail for me.

Does anyone have an idea how far above the horizontal bars the angle bar rises on the tail section of an S1? It almost looks as if you could heat/bend or cut/weld the M2 extension to fit the S1 body work. I have an M2 frame that I'm sending out to be powder coated and want get some mods done before it goes.

Jt

If you heat and bend it you weaken it and your frame is still to long. The cuts that were made on my bike were right after the oil tank and the lower support tubes were shortened. The rear of the frame back by the taillight is reused, but its almost at a 45 degree angle so the body work will fit.Best bet for you to do is look at a S1 its not all that bad.

Thanks

Well, the M2 went to the welder yesterday to have the frame cut and rewelded. The guy appeared to be pretty knowledgeable and experienced with motorcycles so that was a relief. He also showed me some pictures of bikes he's built. His current project is a GSX-R 1000 engine in a Soft tail frame. He said he had one that he recently sold with a HD engine, but it was just vibrated too much. I'll post pics when the M2 returns. It won't look too good because It's gonna be a while before I get the new tail painted.

Well fellow Buellers,
You can check my profile and see a picture of what my M2 looks like with the S1 tail on it. YES, I do plan on painting it soon. Just haven't decided if I'm going to just paint the tail or save up for a custom paint job.

Kevin...that is nice. IMO the fork conversion is a waste. You loose preload adjustment and gain practically nothing.
