My rear rocker box just started to leak (2001 S3T 3800 miles) and the bike is still under factory warranty.

Called the shop to have the rear fixed but they won't do the front rocker box at the same time because it is not leaking yet.

Has anyone else experienced this under warranty?

The dealership that repaired my front rocker box took the same stance. The rear began leaking a couple months later out of warranty.

Personally...I think it's an indicator of a half-assed ignorant service department because anyone with any HD/Buell experience knows these are prone to leak.

Then again...it gave me a chance to become acquainted with my S3. A truly Zen experience repairing it.

When I changed my rear gasket I noticed that the paper one had shrunk in the same spot that the leak was in.

Quickbuell,

FYI, check out the catch can thread. We will be discussing your problem in future posts.

Pdxs3t & Dave...

Totally feel sorry for you guys. I picked up my bike '02M2 from my servicing dealership after the speedometer and sensor had been replaced. On the way home I blew out the rear gasket. I turned around and took the bike right back. My servicing dealer (Appleton Harley/Buell) replaced both for me no questions asked under warranty. To top it off, I didn't even purchase the bike from them. You can darn well believe I will purchase my next bike from them though.

A good shop would do both at the same time. My 00 M2 had the rear let go. Spacecoast went ahead and did both. Shop Mgr said it save(help) them down the road and was standard practice for them.

My only problem with my 98 S1WL was a rear rocker box leak. After disassembly I found one of the paper gaskets installed incorrectly. It was FOLDED over itself during installation.

I also noticed that the umbrella valves were missing...so much for QC at the assembly plant. Must have been a friday when they put it together.

Very quick fix. Had the gaskets replaced in an hour.

I agree with HOOTOWL, fix them at your leisure and then forget about them. Will probably save you aggrevation in the future. I was returning to Orl from Daytona Bch last night on my X1. Guess what? Rear rocker cover leak (3807 miles).
I have other bikes to ride but if I didn't I'd be scrambling to fix it.

I like the Speed Triple...but never over Buell! Once you get the right gaskets it seems to be a permanent repair

I was pretty smug, 11K+ miles no leaks....rode over to Modesto Buell this morning for their Daytona 200 BBQ, a nice 50 mile run (68*F, blue skys). Park the bike and notice the aroma of burning oil....closer inspection revealed rear cylinder rocker box sqirting out a nice fine spray. Too bad it wasn't shooting inside, it would have improved lubrication. Picked up new gaskets from Modesto Buell....will change them this afternoon.
