I work in a tool and die shop that specializes in plastic injection molding and I have been thinking about designing and building a mold to make a scale S1...

This is what Lastcyclone is trying to find:
yellow XB9S in 1/24 scale
It's a 1/24 scale die cast of a yellow XB9S made by Altaya. From previous web searches anything from Altaya is very hard to find in the US, so I ended up getting mine off ebay. They make the yellow XB9S pictured above along with a white XB9R.

IXO makes a blue XB9R, which I know of a couple of distributors in the US, but I still ended up getting mine off ebay.

I am not sure which manufacturer makes the black XB12R that I have, but the two XB9R's look as though they could have come from the same tooling.

Spidy,
Have you seen this Avon Tires promotional S1 from a few years ago?
Avon Tyres S1 1/10? scale
Avon Tyres S1 1/10? scale 2
I believe it was 1/10 scale, shown below with a 1/10 scale V-Rod for comparison.

I used to be a scale car model freak, so after I became a Buell freak I've been trying to collect all the scale Buell's I can find.

I was thinking about it today. TO build it the way I would want to there would have to be 3 molds.

1 for rubber to make the tires, grips, hoses and seat.

2 for plasics like Body, frame, motor, etc.

3 for the clear like lens for headlight tail and turn signals. ( I can run 3 colors in one mold by haveing a switchable gate)

All in all I would be looking at about 150 to 200k to make the molds. That is not including if I do it, and design it. Then we could be talking less, But it is still muchu denero.

Soooo, where are my investors??

I would built a single family parts mold, switchable gate/runner shutoffs for all the parts. Buy the tires from someone else(why re-create the wheel?). $150K ot $200K is EXTREMELY expensive IMHO. It would be a short run/prototype type of mold for sure. Make the A & B halfs out of aluminum "tooling plate", or even 7075AL. But seeing as this would most likely be ABS, I'm not so sure how many shots we'd get out of it.

I have 7 Machining centers, and two Makino EDM sinkers at my disposal : )

btw, if you give me $150K to make this mold, I could make enough take the rest of the year off : )

We just got a makino at athe shop, that think rules.
We also have two drop tank EDM's that can hold 24x38 inch molds and two drop tanks that can hold 5x10ft molds!

Good point on the tires and rims but I would make this model bigger than anything I have seen yet.

I would also make it outta some S7, but good point about one mold and the runner. Should cut down cost considerably.

Ok enough shop talk I have to be there tommorow : (
