I'm looking to open a bike shop in orange co. NY...on the jersey border.
my question is this..what things do you not buy off the net or mail order? the only wrenching i would be doing is a tire machine/balancing, perhaps.
did i mention BUELL RIDERS get a discount?

I don't know if they exist on the east coast or not but do yourself a favor and copy Cycle Gear's layout. You can't go wrong that way.

As far as not buying certain things mail order?
oil
tires (cost to much to have mounted if you don't buy them at the store. No garrantees, etc.)
m/c lifts or stands

anything heavy or bulky that would eat up savings in shipping $$$$$$$$$$$$

JT- What town, exactly? There are Two very busy shops in Warwick, NY (border town), One in Goshen next town in, Two in West Milford, NJ (Border Town), two in Sussex Cty, NJ (border county).
You doing all brands or Harley/Buell?
If you're doing a harley-oriented shop on that border, prepare to deal with a LOT of club politics.
That's the busiest m/c DMZ in the country, believe it or not.

Cool. Excellent plan, plenty o' bidniz here in The OC. What town, dam*it?
I can definitely help you with flyers. Consider advertising with "Backroads" magazine, as well.
big hits from their rag.
I live next to one of The OC's only bike-parking area taverns (my doing) and Flyers there will be a big boon to you. also, I can get your ad stuff into some of the shops which don't carry metric stuff, as well. Actually, I can get you some nice hooks herabouts with the non-poseur/non-HD crowd.
You have a location, yet?

Carb jets, why I go to the local V-Twin shop instead of the HD store. Large selection, price is OK, and they don't have to look in a parts book to find them. Also filters. In and out, then I'm riding again. I can talk if I want to, but I don't have to wait around (I'm a busy man, got to get home so the wife can yell at me). They can order parts out of all the big catalogs.

YOUR 100% RIGHT...that " i can get it a couple days" crap sucks...thats why i'm opening up a shop..the way it should be..thats also why i'm looking for feed back...to STOCK parts ..not order them...thanks for your point.

Become a "V-twin Mfg." dealer. they're a half-hour from you over in New Windsor, so you can always do pick up orders, there, when necessary.
really cheap, simple terms, and that'll cover any harley needs.
As to BMW stuff, wellll....use my friend (drop my name) "Repsycle BMW Parts" in Lithopoulis, Ohio. New and Used, excellent prices. You need a good BMW guy for service, by the job, you have my #.
As to sinocycle parts, you probably have good hooks for that, already. I don't know much about all that Chinese stuff.....
remember that your local NAPA jobber can usually supply airfilters and oil filters for many bikes, and "Interstate Batteries" has a nice warehouse in Goshen on hatfield Lane, right off 17. I have an account with them their prices and customer service are unbeatable. Tell 'em I sent ya over.. ask for the owner, "Jeff". My shop (semi-operational this past year) is Mountain Motor Sports.
stop out in The 'Loaf one of these weekends if ya wanna yap about your shop. I'm always game to help.

Thunder -- there's little I havn't purchased electronically, but things like oil and filters and brake pads and the like I generally buy in person -- maintenance, while planned, generally has a very short event horizon in the entropy lab, and the fact that most of these items are readily available at loval shops of various kinds makes the spur-of-the-moment supplies-acquisition process sustainable --

Things like helets and other gear is generally planned for the big MC show in February (round hear), or over the net, as the dealers (of all brands) can't possibly carry all brands/sizes --

sides, buyin oil over the net might save a little money, but I have a feeling the shipping would more than make up for it ;-}

good luck with your shop, bud !

Bombs- these 'helets' at the 'loval' shops- are they gallic items?
great suggestions- oil can be slightly tricky in our OC, the original american OC, named for your own William Of Orange... shop's gotta provide a means by which to dispose of it in some cases, and not in others...I use "conoco", locally, but they can be pricey...
Sometimes, just purchasing the oil through retail bargain houses and selling it at no profit can provide a wonderful loss leader for your impulse buys and yer filters, etc....
Free coffee works wonders, esp. next to a bulletin board of rides and bikes for sale, etc....

tramp -- thinkin is hard enough for me -- I'll try to pay more attention to the typing though --

our local municipality has a little-known fringe bennie for it's residents -- we can recycle our used oil at the Village Maint Facility -- I doubt if there are more than about 50 folks in town that take advantage of the perq, but it's a great one, IMO -- I generally save up about a years worth of oil changes, load up the jugs in the 313 ford, and toddle over on a Saturady Morning -- the wrenches there are good folks, and tellin em thanks for their hard work really seems to put a smile on their faces

disposal of used oil, paint, batteries and all has gotta tougher and tougher -- it's the reason cited by a number of small indie shops for closing their doors

an "old time" shop would be great. far too many boutiques around these days (don't blame them though, they have to go where the money is). would be good to have a "destination" shop where you can head out and base rides from.

maybe start doing some "recon" with a notebook and compile a list of likes/dislikes of the local shops. a little benchmarking won't hurt.

lessee, now:
1.cycle motion, middletown-
Kawi dealer, nice parts dep't., good sales team, lousy service, excellent tire prices, mounted.
2.Backyard cycle, warwick-
ultra-sloppy work, slow turnaround, excellent inspection station
3.Burn'm city choppers, goshen-
excellent service (all makes, even though it's headlines as a HD shop), MMI trained techs, strictly service and service parts, owner has a hotrodded S3.
4. Unique cycle-
outstanding value on parts, new and used, primarily HD, emphasis on flatties, shovels and pans, but plenty of evo stuff. great machine shop 'hooks' (that's NY for 'connections'), killer $1- used parts bin, good service, can and WILL order anything his huge stack of distributor books carries, at huge discount.
5. Orange County Choppers- next-
6.Desi Cycles, Florida (NY)-
nice guy, auspicious little start-up, marginal work leaving shop, parts prices not-so-great, but a nice guy.
7.Rockwell cycle- dealer for some cool euro marques, service for most brands, have heard mildly positive stuff about 'em- great location- near everything on hudson/bear mtn/west point.
8. Saintly Cycles- new windsor- know little about 'em, but the proprietor posts here and on sacborg. I'll be checking them out, soon.
9.Moroney's, new windsor-
HD stealership, with a metric dep't., as well. horrific sales & service, less-than honest; parts guys pretty good, though.
10.Mountain Motor Sports, Chester- nearly-defunct for past 2 years, limited schedule- factory-trained BMW tech, emphasis on airheads and HD/Buell, japanese restorations done cheaply and nicely. Currently referring HD work to Burn'm City Choppers, Goshen. Proprietor is a wingnut snowboarder

Performance cycles--- Middletown all ex-racers predominant metric shop with Harley trained techs---go figure good work fast turn around decent prices.

Jersey you are about 10 minutes from tramp... sure he would have found that out if he made the liberty run with us.. had to get a dig in there. What about a Tattoo shop in there without an artist that would be nice too.

woulda loved to have made the run, Hamcan- I'll hand you my clutch hub and pressure plate next time I see you. JT and I have discussed aforementioned coordinates offsite, though.
I hear ONLY excellent stuff about performance cycles, as well. i guess the best tech cycle motion had went there? You out and about today, Hammer?
Looking to put together a nice run next weekend....lemme know if ye'r gonna be around.
Do NOT look at advrider, you'll see your scoot posted with an antibuell blurb. Gonna 'pants' that guy.....

JT- You're in-
a bunch of guys from ... another excellent pro-buell website.... (that cool?) want to swoop down from new england to blast about perkins and 218 for a day or two. injunmort has offered to put 'em up (probably out in the garage with the collection of antique limey iron), so i figgered we'd get a nice group together for a day or two of light-hearted hijinks.
looking at likely next weekend-
you have my number, ya mug.....

This weekend was our Hamlet's fall festival...street vendors, street musicians, etc., plus it rained, i don't expect anyone to travel from new england to ride in the rain....
