Panic,

I have no idea what you are talking about. If you had posts removed, it wasn't by me and I don't see them in the depository where custodians are supposed to move inappropriate content. It's possible one of my fellow custodians accidently deleted instead of moved your inappropriate comments. Best you heed the warning and try to avoid that type of content.

John (M2me),
To clarify, are you telling me that you refuse to abide by the policies of this discussion board?

As to the rest of your commentary.

I don't call anything I don't agree with "negative." I do recognize and will absolutely characterize as "negative" such rude, contrary, divisive smart-assed insulting statements/gossip as posted above by Nevar.

I don't call people "miserable" for holding a different view than mine. I characterize as "miserable" those actions or comments that indeed are miserable, meaning they are mean, shameful or contemptible.

I am not seeking to learn the truth through such wretched miserable commentary. There is little to nothing worth learning from such miserableness.

It is definitely a good idea to become sure enough of yourself to be able to recognize destructive gossip and hateful negativity and then to refuse to listen to it. Learning to ascertain the difference between constructive ideas and destructive/negativism/insult/gossip is a very good idea.

I'll simply not allow miserable gossip or negativity to pollute this board. It's pretty obvious that the other custodians support that effort. If you don't like it, you should cease your participation here.

Miserable is miserable. It is a word with a meaning and a clear definition and viable use, and it is absolutely applicable in this case. Period.

You've now baited me into wasting five minutes of my free time. I guess I still hold out some hope for you and your misguided relativism, or I would simply remove your argumentative post.

Now leave me the heck alone, please. : |

Nevar,

"If someone can point to something Dean did to benefit humanity other than being cool, I'll apologize and retract this rant."

I've seen a number of posts from folks including me pointing out some of James Dean's beneficial contributions to humanity. We are waiting for your retraction.

I'm not much of a Dean fan one way or the other.
A few years ago a number of old auto accidents involving famous persons were reconstructed using modern techniques by a group who does this for evidence in current court cases involving auto accidents.
Dean's accident was one of them.
Dean was speeding along at a wopping 54 mph at the time of the accident. He had the right of way.
Likely he was driving so slow because he was also fighting a massive sun glare at the time that also made it very hard to see the other guy pull out from his stop sign and into Dean's traffic lane right in front of him. Dean would have survived except for what happened after his car slid off the road.
The other guy had great visual conditions.
Seems the other guy had a bonehead moment and killed somebody because of it.

Would Dean be as big today if he had made more movies? had flops? No one knows.

Actors & Actresses are the repository of our hopes, and the inspiration of our dreams. We expect too much of the people who entertain us.

One thing I've noticed, is that the people who have become the timeless stars, like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and even JFK, is that they all died young. We don't have pictures of Marilyn at 75. We don't get to see Elvis turn 70 this year. Would we remember them less fondly if we did? I'd like to think we weren't that shallow, but the facts make that kind of hard to believe.

I am not about to apologize for what I stated here in this thread so I will not be retracting either. But I will clarify.

My point was: People (and not just Americans) tend to idolize celebrities and not heros.

James Dean was a celebrity - not a hero: A self-centered, whining, pouting, wealthy (at the timme of his death), hot-rodding actor. Whether he was a good actor or not doesn't matter. Whether he was gay or not doesn't matter.

To find some real heros open up your newspapapers to the obit section or read the obit section of Time magazine every week and you'll find men and women who have lived part (sometimes all) of their adult lives in the service of mankind. These people are soldiers, firemen, policemen, teachers, scientists. There are also those people in our world who have mundane jobs but find time to volunteer REGULARLY to organizations that serve mankind. These are mostly boring, unsung heros, lacking charisma, but occasionally some names will rise above the rest so that people mention their names for a short time - then back to oblivion for them.

I don't have anything against entertainers or performers, on the contrary, I watch or purchase their products often. But I don't idolize most them. Likewise, people buy the product that I make - but I don't expect them to idolize me either. There are some entertainers and athletes who donate their time and money to good causes - these folks bridge the gap and become both celibrity and hero.

If a celibrity dies tomorrow, well OK, everyone dies. I will be sorry that they died but no more than any other person who lived their lives doing what they wanted to do.

But when a true hero dies, it affects me for a very long time - maybe for as long as I live.

So if this gets me banned Mr. Blake, WebMASTER, sobeit.

read the obit section of Time magazine every week

Umm Time mags, obit has actors and celebs in it all the time. Even Frank Gorsh AKA the Riddler from Bat Man.

Now on to your reason for destroying this thread. Not once did Jerry call him a Hero nor did the few posts after.

I thing JD was a great man and actor, but not a real hero. Of course he wasn't. But to say people shouldn't idolize people that aren't heroes is very small minded.

I idolize metal fabricators and engineers like Erik Buell, Billy Lane, to an extent Jesse James and the list can go on.

I respect heroes, I thank heroes, and I make sure to thank a Vet anytime I meet one. Heroes shouldn't be idolized they should be revered; honored, treasured ad aspired too.

So having said that, your argument has no validation and the trash you are spewing should be somewhere else other than here.

I see. You define 'trash' as an opinion different from yours.

And yes - weekly news magazines (and daily newspapers) have celibrities in the obits too. Celibrities are worshiped and you've just added another bit of proof for my argument. You'll have to look a little harder to find the heros.

If you take the time to read my first post you'll see I wasn't attacking anyone. I was criticizing an idea - the idol-worship of a dead actor. Then I was attacked and I responded.

But here on this forum it seems that certain folks (virtual or real friends of the WebMASTER and his staff) can attack all they want to while others get admonished. OK.

Mr WebMASTER, Why don't you make this forum a 'motorcycle-only' content and maybe this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

But there was never any mention of him as a hero until you hijacked this post. You made the first attack in my opinion and my feeling this thread should be deleted since it has gone so far off track. Ferris thanks for the heads up on the anniversary. I am to young to remember when James was alive but I have enjoyed his movies. And I hope that when I do have kids they enjoy them also.

Wow. OK. I'm guilty of hijacking a thread. But the thread stayed on subject so maybe i'm not quilty.

Besides, if hijacking a thread is a banning offense then there wouldn't be any forums because everyone does it from time to time.

But I do agree - this thread should be deleted - but for different reasons than yours.

I know I said I was through before but I really am tired of this. Enough said.

Look at it this way. Maybe James Dean is ahead for having died young.

I don't think he was a "great actor" yet at the time of his death. Had he lived, he may have wound up being something like a cross between Librace and Marlon Brando. And I don't think anyone would want to go out like that.

Bomber,
You going with tire chains or studded tires this winter?????
All I've read in this thread is the first two posts and the last two. I'm thinking that might be a good plan to stick with.
I did bring home the Sporty last night and rode it in to work this morning. Different than they used to be way back when, a few tweaks over the winter and it should make for a decent two-up bike.
Oh well, think I'll just back slowly towards the door and step out of here quietly.
'scuse the tangental/tangenital/divergent post in this thread, whatever this thread became.

I did go for a ride..............................................and I'm back.

Nevar, ask yourself this. Who gives a flying fcuk who calls who a hero?

Just imagine one misguided child saw Dean act in 'Rebel' and that child through watching said movie turned his life around for the better because he liked Dean's character. To that one not so misguided child anymore James Dean might well be a hero.

Point is dear fella, we all know teachers soldiers policemen etc etc etc are unsung heroes but that doesn't give you a right to shite down everyone else's back because they happen to admire an actor that you clearly don't. I'd be interested to hear who you see as a worthy actor and why?

Personally I'm no big fan of actors par se but it's hard to dismiss any type of entertainer in the manner you have James Dean simply because you see him in a light that doesn't agree with your own sensibilities. Hell, you didn't even know the guy fer chrisakes.

Just saw a special on the Discovery Channel about JD's fatal accident. Showed an interview he did kinda impromptu about a month before his death where he closed by asking that (paraphrasing) everyone "please drive safe because the life you save might be mine."

Analysis shows that the accident was not his fault, nor was he traveling at a crazy high speed. His two last movies were not released until after his death. He was on his way to the races in his new race car in order to get the engine worn-in.

Nevar,
This Buell enthusiasts' forum does not exist to provide a launching pad for personal opinion, effect and tone be damned. Instigating division and consternation on this board is a blatant violation of the policy to which one agrees upon registering.

Again, you stated that "if someone can point to something Dean did to benefit humanity other than being cool, I'll apologize and retract this rant." I and others have done so, yet you refuse to honor your own statement.

This after initiating an unfortunate unprovoked attack against a dead man that included blatantly false information, namely your assertion that Mr. Dean "died like an idiot, driving twice the speed limit." That is simply untrue.

I've asked you privately and publicly to cease your unwelcome polluting of this board and subversion of what was intended to be a positive thread. If you cannot abide by that simple polite request, you will need to cease your participation here. Period.
