I was attempting to start my '98 M2 after about a one hour ride and when I hit the starter it cranked hard (which happens sometimes- I think it's where the pistons are on the stroke(??)). Anyways, I hit the starter again and the bike does kind of a muffled backfire and this big smoke cloud floats out from the front of the bike (header area). I checked for cracks, leaks, holes (all the while praying) and didn't find a thing. I rode the bike home and it ran fine. Does anyone know "What the hell was THAT!!!" or "What the hell that was!!!" errrr... you get the point.
Thanks,
Kevin

It sounds like some oil leaked past your check valve and you blew it out starting up the motor.

Kdraw1,
That exact scenario happened to me once. It was a backfire. Check your air filter. Mine had holes burned into it. A 45 pilot jet should cure that lean running symptom.

Thanks Jssport and Blake. I plan on doing some carb work and changing the air filter to aftermarket in the very near future (read: when I get some money).

I was thinking this could be the new game for the
board. Sort of like Name That Tune. "For a stock air-box coffee mug holder...What the hell was THAT!!!" Don't think it would work? You're probably right.

Have a great weekend.

Buellistic, I know about turning off the gas. More out of habit than necessity- used to ride dirt bikes.
Thanks,
Kevin
