VDO North America has SOLD the business unit that made the ECMs we've been talking about. Getting a response was somewhat like pulling teeth. Lame.

I'll now try to find who acquired that business... That also begs the question: Who's doing the XB's ECM?

the problem with BDM is that they are having the same problem that we seem to be having. Getting the Buell cards that go in these scan tools. Otherwise I would probably allready have one of these in my hands!!

BDM soon to have the Buell cartridge working, hopefully. Heres the E-mail I just recived.

The Buell cartridge will be available at the latest, July. This cartridge supports all of the diagnostic features which the Harley Davidson tool does, including reset of the TPS and AFV.

no I did not get a price, but I had heard through the grapevine that the cards would be coming soon. Didn't realize July!!!! usually when you hear the word "soon" I assume 6 months to a year.

i can't confirm it right now, but i believe the Blue Streak BDM unit you are referring to is even more expensive than the Kent-Moore Scanalyzer.

($2500 vs ~$1700, i think)

During biketoberfest 98 Buell had several groups running around to evry bike they could find and reprogramed the Ecm while it was on the bike. all the soft luggage was on the bike so they didnt realize tell they looked i was on a M2. They were using Palm sized computer may even been a Timex sinclair! From what i remember there were atleast two groups crawling all over Daytona reprograming bikes

It's been clear for a while that the ECM is re-flashable with factory tools and knowledge. Therein lies the problem as we lack the tools and knowledge and are working at acquiring them.

I had a talk with my dealer this past weekend and discovered two things:

First, it would appear that the race ecm can accomodate a wide variety of changes. (This guy had put DDFI on a 97 M2 with many mods and it ran pretty well)

Second, as a dealer they don't know anything above and beyond the scanalyzer.

The race team I had talked to a while ago knew of the software, but couldn't offer any additional information.

May the Anonygods rain this knowledge down upon us:

1) Is the only difference between 99-02 stock and race ECMs firmware? I believe the answer is YES based on info on this board.

2) Besides firmware, how does the XB's (and whtever other injected future Buell) ECM compare to the older ECMs?

Hey, everyone. I thought I'd post info on a failed interfacing attempt.

First of all, I've been working on the assumption that the diagnostic port is OBD-II-like (actually J1850 VPW), but with a separate transmit and receive (as described in the shop manual) rather than a common bus.

I figured the easiest way to try this theory out was to purchase the Elm322 chip and the scantool.net printed circuit board, then make a slight alteration to the PCB to split OBDin and OBDout apart.

While I was at it, I emailed Elm Electronics to ask them if what I was attempting was feasible, to find that it wasn't. BUT the engineer thought that this was a great project and actually burned me a specialized chip to use. ON TOP OF THAT, he refused payment (doing this basically in the name of science). Cool. (I need to reimburse him before this is all over.)

Unfortunately, it's not working. Which brings me to the QUESTION: has anyone had any luck determining exactly what protocol is used on the diagnostic port interface? (Industrial espionage anyone? My suspicion is 'no', but I thought I'd ask.)

My last resort will be to build an onboard 'sniffer' that records both waveforms when the bike is being scanalyzed. Definately a wintertime project as the weather is just too good right now...

Although encouraging, how dumb is that! Release it for Big Twin FI first? What about the tuner segment that is continually working on their Buell's? Marketing must have taken a holiday. I realize there are many Big Twin owners that will use this software, but how does their quantity compare to the number of Buell owners that would use it? Anyway, just ranting, please disregard.

About 175,000 Harleys that could use it have been produced.
About 12,000 DDFI Buells have been produced.

Anon - I was simply questioning the number of viable customers for Buell vs. HD that would be interested in an FI tuning package. I realize that the sales numbers are hugely disproportionate, but how many Harley customers would drop near $500 to tune their FI? A question that will truly only be answered with time. BTW, I don't buy the development cost bit since the software is already in use by the Buell race teams.

The way this thread is looking based on the SE TwinCam FI remapping dealie, I may be sending your ECM back in a not much more, uh, lab ratted condition. I just wish we could get a definitive answer on that product and its potential application to DDFI Buells.

Buell should have an EFI race tuner available in September for the Firebolt. Various maps will come with the tuner. Also will allow adjustment to the rev limiter. It will allow custom programming of the ECM (race ECM, I presume) independently for both ignition and fuel maps. Includes software and interfaces with a PC computer/laptop. Price will be somewhere in the $460 range.
