Last Thursday: Phone dead.
Power: Yes.
No problem: Will use cell phone to call phone service.
Cell phone also dead.
Not strange noises or rings or blips. No also absolute silence.
No internet of course, because the phone cable is used for ADSL.
Not any information. TV only the innocent outer- prime-time-blah-blah.
Maybe the big terrorist hit, which has been announced during Sail Amsterdam. Our turn now after New York, Paris and London. Maybe no TV announcements to avoid panic ???.
"Get gas, our tank is empty and when some kind of desorganisation happens, getting gas will be critical" said my wife, smartly as ever.
Nah, my Buell has its tank full and that means a lot of miles.
At the gas station: Not a row of cars. But the service man rushed out before I could snatch the tap. "Have you money". Impertinent question and I had to think about an answer. "You can`t use a credit card. You have to pay with real money now. All phone lines are dead."
But he knew more: Big, but Local, communication center struck by lightning, the night before. Phew.
Missing communications is even worse than missing electricity.
Be prepared:
Have some money at home for gas.
And apart from that:
Have access to water
Have an house with a chimney
Have wood or coal or oil to keep you warm
Have some food at home
Have an oil lamp, candles and spare batteries for light and radio.
(All prae war born humans are knowing that)

Hans,
All goood advice. Picture what would happen if there was no gasoline, instead of no power. Things would get ugly very quickly.

i've heard it said that a civil society is never more than 48 hours away from total collapse.

remove the conveniences of modern life; remove easy access to food, water, electricity, transportation, communication... how long would it take before food riots began? collapse of government control? how long before food, or fuel, was controlled by the group with the most guns...

mad max, anyone?

Funny, but the back ground looks like the campground at the Easyriders Roadeo I just went to.

I was pretty well prepared for a natural disaster. Loads of training, equipment and a nice selection of weapons (mostly hunting rifles but we're talking about survival, not war) then I get Type I diabetes.

Without insulin I'm dead in 36-48 hours, a victim of DKA, Diabetic Ketoacidosis. I guess I don't have to worry about it anymore. Without electricity and a biomedical facility capable of synthesizing insulin it's all over for me and a few million others. Oddly enough most of the Type II diabetics would likely survive as the forced diet would do them a world of good!

Freakin' disease takes all the fun out of the apocalypse!
