I know there are a few here besides me that stand to be affected by the 2005 Base Realignment And Closure (BRAC). I'm watching it on-line on C-Span II this morning.

They took just about 1 hour to go through the complete list of Army recommendations. If you're on an Army base that was on the list, your fate is now known.

Navy is up next.

Tripper,

Good luck to you. My command just got closed/relocated to Jacksonville, FL. The real kicker is New London Sub Base just was voted OFF the list (congrats to anyone up there). All that stuff was supposed to move to Kings Bay, which would have been a HUGE workload for us. Since that's not gonna happen now, odds are they won't need all of us.

Oh boy, when it rains it pours. Guess I better start polishing up the old resume.

hmm, Little Rock to have a net gain of 25 aircraft and the associated required personnel. Looks like parking is gonna be at a premium on the ramp.

Uh lemme get this str8, I am not all into the legal mumbo jumo here, I am not a lawyer or politician....

Are they closi NAS Oceana or not, I suppose I could go to bar, and watcht he news( I refuse to own a TV), and they put NAS Brunswick on the list, or recomended it?

I know they were talking about the Avaition side of it...but, I wont be there working in that area..

I hate this crap.

I for one, having heard people complain about the noise from the base(which has been in service since I think someone said the 50s..)... Close the base, let the local economy suffer, more importantly, let their property value fall..the base was there long before mnost of the houses that are there now..they will get over it...

Chase,

This BRAC commission is doing some weird stuff compared to previous commissions. Here's the deal on NAS Oceana:

They said UNLESS the State of Virginia and the cities of Virginia Beach (and Hampton Roads IIRC) pass new zoning laws that keep buildings full of people out of the flight paths for Oceana, and pay to move existing businesses, schools, etc. out of these areas, and IF the state of Florida goes through with giving Cecil Field (which was BRAC'ed in 1993) and its facilities back to the Navy with no strings attached, then NAS Oceana will be closed and the master jet base will be moved to Cecil Field, which will be re-opened.

Virginia has 6 months from the time the list is signed to get their ducks in a row; otherwise, Oceana gets closed. I guess that's a pretty fair way to do it; "if you want to keep this base, put up or shut up".

Yea, this stuff sucks. I went through it once already in 1993 when they closed the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Charleston, SC. I found a job at another local Navy command, and now we're getting closed too. As much as it does suck, we will still fare far better than most folks in private industry that lose their jobs. I'll probably have a chance to relocate to Jacksonville, FL (although I don't see how I can do that because of family commitments), and worst case I'm entitled to a butt-load of severance pay. I'm sure something will work out for me. Hope you do OK too.

there are (at least) two systems in this country that should NOT be messed with: Education and the Military.

each should NEVER have to beg for money, and each should NEVER be compromised.

this country is great for many reasons, and our educational system and our military are at the top of the list.

noise? when a jet blazes over Lake Isabella and commences a training run up the North Fork of the Kern River (i live near Edwards AFB and China Lake NAS and we get fly-bys all the time), i hear only the sound of freedom.

good luck to all concerned, my thoughts are with you.

Agreed Ferris..
I don't give a sheeeeeeee-at what the politicians (military or civilian clothed ones) say, the military needs to be larger for National Security. I know this has been batted around on the Badweb more than once. We need to grow Homeland Defense as well and get those borders under control.

Sorry but the BRAC is crap in my opinion. There's only so much "Do More With Less" before the lean muscle is cut to expose bone. Thank you to the folks letting us sleep at night safe and sound.

Agreed. I beef about paying all sorts of taxes, but never military.

I can't even *remember* the last time my village was sacked and looted. I say that tounge in cheek, but it is a cold hard fact, and I have the US military to thank for it.

Yes, the BRAC is not perfect. Yet some good does come of it. The BRAC is more about getting the best cost to return ratio that can be had.

Sometimes the squeeze is being put on the base from the locals. A lot of installations are sitting on prime revenue generating turf. Some cities have expanded around an installation and now make a fuss about it.

I see the point in shutting down low utilization places. Especially those that have an excessive burden of upkeep compared to use.

Would you...

want ten facilities that operate at 5% use and cost 100% per to operate.

or...

three facilites that can operate at 75% of use and cost 100% per to operate.

The savings in upkeep can then be applied to other priorities. Sometimes this is the only way to source required funding for newer and improved toys for the troops.

One other consideration at this point in history... the cost of securing all those little places. Back when, it made sense to scatter the equipment about. Less likely to lose a bunch in one hit. Now it makes more sense to consolidate (to a degree), to provide better and more cost effective security of those assets.

or in the short, look at it this way.

You do appreciate getting the most out of every dollar you spend, don't you?

not ranting just being the devils advocate.

In San Diego I was constantly telling those that complained about the noise that it is far better to hear ours than "THEIRS" flying overhead. If you know what I mean. I got out of the USN in 93 when they de-comissioned my ship in the first brac go around

To Piggy back on Ferris,
During the first couple months of my tour in Balad, Iraq; The USO provided one helluva Show with Wayne Newton Hosting. The major musical act was Neil McCoy who was giving a great performance when in between songs a couple of jets took off in the back ground.
Neil not being familiar with the sight and sound, that for us was routine, ducked a little and asked "What the hell was that?" and then explained that he was trying to keep from jumping back down into the bunker that was the green room so to speak. Most of us laughed and yelled that it was a jet or plane or F16, but one soldier waited 'till it died down a little and yelled "That's the sound of Freedom!" Neil smiled and nodded his head while trying to figure out who had yelled it then grinned a little bigger and said "You know, I like that."
