It's not just H-D/Buell dealerships. When I owned a non-Buell sporty/type bike I could never get the kind of treatment that I felt I deserved at my local multi-brand dealer. Of course where I live they put a little more emphasis on 4-wheelers, but still if you stock the bikes you should know something about them. But they knew nothing, about anything. I'm serious. And I live in a college town where sport bikes are becoming more abundant, and they still have made no effort to increase their knowledge base. But I've had these experiences at multiple dealerships. Sportbikes are just shunned in the bible belt, a fact that I'll just have to live with. Lack of interest when I step up to check out a new sportbike, lack of interest when I check on general sportbike accessories, lack of parts in stock. Ahhhhhh..........

Hey Daves, i understand that the dealer has to make a profit, pay employees, and keep the lights on. But charging me $120 more than the price that i can buy the tire for seems alittle excessive. Plus $35 more to mount it if i bring the rim.

And its not like he has the tire in stock anyways, i would have to leave a deposit and he`ll get it in 3 days. I`m not a rich guy, to me if i can save $100 or so dollars its a big deal.

Truth is if the dealer sold me the tire for $30 more than i paid and had it in stock, SOLD! But when he says the best i can do after the discount is $229 and its all over the internet for $105-$110, well shame on him.

Hey I am in it to save myself money to but you need to know the understanding of owning a high end business like a Harley Dealerhip.

NOBODY can compete with the internet. The prices most dealers sell for (including myself) is MSRP. Do you think quality might have something to do with the cheaper prices? I dont now. Like dave said companies like that buy cheaper then most dealerships get them maybe cause of bulk also.

Now for labor, Put yourself into a service managers shoes. At our dealership it is $90 to change the rear and $60 for front if the bike is brought in and $30 each if just the rim is brought in. With that you get full mount and balance. If something was to happen with the tires if purchased from the dealer then the dealer would be able to fight the issue, but if you purchased on the internet Who will warranty that, and how easy will it be? If purchased on the internet and something was to happen mounting the tire (warranty issue) The dealer would expect to get paid for the work even though you out of a tire which would you off. Which would potentally loose a customer. Its not that the Dealer is trying to ROB you(the customer) to make alot of money but Think about it as a good job being done to your motorcycle.

A little story, I had a tech that drop a customers Buell because the customer let his tires get to the point of being dangerous that my tech wrecked his bike, and we had to pay for it. And the customer was waiting on his tires to come in from the internet.

Just think of the money as a substatute for customer service. I can see why they wouldnt want to do intsall the rim that was purchased from the internet, But I work for Harley.

Havn't read the whole thread yet, but hey Chasespeed- just wait 'till you show up on a muddy Uly! HAHAHAAAA the "real bikers" will be scraping up their jaws! Just don't do a dirt-flinging burnout near the chrome masterpieces, or you'll get to prove it'll handle too!

'Welcome! I didn't mean to start another Dave-is-great thread, there's actually a buncha sponsors, dealers, and regular ol' Badwebbers that know how to treat the customer right.

We're not all that hard to please: just give us good parts (covered by Erik) and good service (licked by the sponsors). For that I will pay a few bucks more, but not the "Harley-hundred". Gotta draw the line somewhere.

Still, I hate to see H-D shops lose Buell, 'cuz it's one less possible warranty and apparel shop for me to use, and there's always at least one guy (usually a parts or service monkey) whose eyes light up at the chance to talk about something not chromed!

I can buy tires online cheaper than here and I work here!
I don't, cause it isn't that much difference with my discount and I do work here. I mount them up myself(with Ernie's help), one of the perks of the job!
The big tire places buy them for a lot less than most shops, HD,Buell or other brand can.
That's just the way it is.
But, don't be surprised when the dealer is a little put off when you walk in with your tires you paid less for than he does. It is not a perfect world. Not saying they shouldn't mount them up for you but you should be able to understand why they aren't thrilled about it.

they also buy factory seconds sometimes

try to mount and balance one of the "discount" tires

some of them suck bad

cant get them to bead or balance sometimes

just my 2c

I've had to order brake pads and have waited over a month for a few odd vendor direct parts. It happens.

Our shop charges the same for changing a Buell rear tire as a Harley...and that's $90. Most shops I've gone to charge around $45 to mount a tire on a loose wheel. That's why I bought a few pieces of equipment and do it (and everything else) myself.
