mike- why did you replace the front motor mount?
what with all of your attendant vibe-related issues (paint cracking, however, can be from improper fastener torque and bad repaint as well as vibe), maybe you have an impropery aligned tie-bar, near there, which has been overlooked. not sure why your tank is vibrating, but i suggest you look into it, as well. all sound like a related issue.
that bike is far from fragile. go ride it hard and far.
jackbequick- my Keihin CVs have all been trouble-free and very compensatory at high altitude. my S2 has crossed the continental divide of it's own power sevral times, from one ocean to the other, with little to no sign of issues from altitude.
same for my bing CVs.

I wonder how the CV-40's work at higher altitudes?

A little loss of power above 10,000 feet, nothing serious. Mine has run fine at -282 feet below sea level to 14,000 above (Death Vally and Mt Evans)

Tramp, my motor mount broke. The dealer replaced it. This particular front mount has no tie bar. The paint cracked on my tail section right where my legs go down on the pegs. It is right at the inner curve where your legs fit.The tank is vibrating at the tongue where it resides on the frame. I put a piece of rubber hose on the frame a while ago but, it is still making a racket. I just love redesighning brand new $7000.00 motorcycles.Buell said they would not replace my cracked tail section and they said they don't cover paint so I am out of luck despite my $900.00 extended warranty. Under 9000 miles on the bike, still under warranty, the paint cracks and the tail section starts coming a part on me. Well I am out of luck. I like the bike though and don't plan on buying Buell in the future. I am counting on Victory to deliver the goods down the road. I try and buy American at all costs but, I expect to be treated fairly as well. It takes alot but, if you get on my bad side I won't do business with you anymore.

Buell or the dealer?

You deffinately have issues(with the bike) that should be resolved, out of curiosity is the "extended warranty" an insurance policy or a factory thing?

The reason I aked is that "purchase warranty insurance" is a big business, and IMO a bigger rip off. If "they" can get you to buy it when you finnance the item you are getting it in a big bad way. By the time most folks come up needing it, they finaly read the policy and discover that it has so many exclusions that its all but useless. Of course the finnance co loves it because your paying interest on it too.
My .02$ perhaps a letter to BMC may be worth the time to write, I did it did not get all of my issues resolved BUT my bike was out of warranty
and they with the dealer made the effort to try to sort out the EFI system, together We managed to.

Oh yes you may know this but e-bay is a good source for parts from time to time if you can't get the tail section replaced.
(Message edited by oldog on August 14, 2005)
the insurance I refer to above is usualy 3rd party stuff, got stung on this at a car dealer once it was not factory warranty, and had to pay for some power window work on a car that I was the original owner of. sorry about your problem
I hope that you can get it resolved, the tubers are not anvils but they aren't glass either.

Mfell,
Find a posting for Court on this site - actually, just go to home court advantage heading. This is a period of time when he's got a couple of distractions so he may not respond immediately, but I couldn't tell you the number of times I've seen a complaint similar to yours and seen him post that he wants to help and asks for a pm with background. No promises, but it's definitely worth pursueing.

Mike, just start screaming about the B.B.B. My crappy (for Buells) dealer replaced all my plastic on my S3 when these little tiny insignificant bubbles showed up. Also when my engine destroyed it's self 2 years out of warrenty, and it was shown to be caused by the crank being located off it's center from the factory, H-D Buell replaced everything from the new cases, oil pump, pistons, crank, labor, EVERYTHING, and charged me nothing.
Just start screamin', and don't stop!

sooner, Galen

that's not why i asked. anytime an engine mount is replaced, especially if it "broke", the tiebar alignment should be rechecked.
if it was not checked, it would, indeed, cause vibration-related symptoms, including paint cracking and tank rattling.
how did you know the engine mount was broken, to begin with?

also, in your first post, you said you replaced the mount. now it sounds like a dealer did the work. that changes things considerably, in your favour

'95 S2= 150,000 miles, no serious problems until the wristpin spit a circlip. Still my favorite Buell of all.
What can I say, I'm a BuellWhore, and I want to horde all the S2's and stash them in my shop where they will be protected from "chopper mania".
My S1W has also been a great bike, and provides lots of smiles. My City-X is sitting right next to it, and I have to admit, it's giving me smiles just as often if not more.
So far, in 10 years of owning and riding Buells, I've NEVER had the serious problems I've heard others having. I still have every Buell I've bought, they are my kids. Would you sell one of your kids? (don't answer that) : )
Buells are fun, AND reliable, INCLUDING the tubers...

Bart,
I've got the same problem as you, I've got two, one in my garage, one still clogging up Mom and Pop's place in PA, and I'll never sell either of them. I do need an S1 and S2 though. The tubers had their quirks, but I beat the hell out of my Cyclone and never had a big problem that I didn't cause.

Good luck with the new job, party hard.

Erik,
If'n you are reading, the John Deere Compact Track Loaders are being built as we speak (write), and may even be able to provide you with a model when I'm up in a few weeks. WE build what you were looking for, YOU built what I was looking for, and now I've got to figure out how to swing the 'Bolt AND a Uly.

9812 miles XB12R One problem left me on the side of the road.

Front cylinder plug wire came loose from the Coil got water in it (as it was raining) spent an hour digging under the airbox to re-seat it... no problem since.

About to need a new front vibration iso...looking pretty lunched..

Aside of that.. no problems here.

Erik,

If you are reading this, "Howdy". I'm Jon from the American Sport Bike Night dinner....we smoked cigars in the parking lot after dinner at Rockys. Remember? Augie brought the fine smokes, my wife sat in the car while we stood around outside and talked about everything from kids to the solar heat gain co-efficients in commercial curtainwall glass.

Anyhoo, love the X1 you made me. Took it around Redwood Road in the Castro Valley/Oakland hills today 4 times!!! Scared myself once. What a ripper. No complaints.

Stay groovy.

my Y2K MaDeuece is by far the most reliable scoot I've ever owned (since partial ownership started, hidden from ym Mom, in '64) -- I'll not describe the longevity of my other scoots, but will summerize (oposite of winterize?) by saying every single one of em left me riding shank's mare at least once --

rockerbox gaskets, kickstand switch, and, er, uh, a bunch of other lil owner-inflicted ills that were put right by the chucklehead what caused em

this is, in no way, meant to be an attempt to counter those who've had problems, not at all -- I've seen some of those problems on other's bikes, helped fix em on the side of the road, and suffered through many of the now legendary dealership issues (still searching for a service department south of Appleton Wisconsin that can change a tire on time, btw)

just another data point for the big graph in the sky

Crusty's post that started this thread deals with his needed repairs on a bike with 50,000 miles on a cross country trip. I think that there is, or should be, a to-do list for the 30K mark that would include most of Crusty's issues. On that list I would have: belt replacement, isolator inspection or replacement, oil pump gear, rocker box gasket, final drive bearing lube, primary seal replacement, wheel bearings, and maybe a few others things that don't come readily to mind. Is this an unreasonable task list? Probably eight hours labour at the four year mark for the miles I put on. My Ninja riding buddy spends a few hundred bucks twice a year for valve lash adjustment (although I think he's kinda anal.) A Ducati would need the cam belt replaced (twice?) in that interval.
My spending style is to fix things when they break. Can't afford to be more pro-active. And I don't generally go more than a day's ride from home, these days. But realistically, with this sport, you should schedule some regular down-time and spending to keep from having to do repairs on the side of the road.
We completed a twenty-bike rip arould Mt. St. Helens that was more than half Buells. In three days of flailing on them, the mechancial problems were: a cracked header on an S1 and an occassional complete loss of power on an RC51. Both bikes completed the ride. The S1 is re-welded. The RC51's glitch hasn't recurred (knock on wood.)

some items seem extraneous-
my belt went past the 200k mile mark, my factory oil pump gear's still in thar', my final drive bearing and primary seal are both fine.
rocker box gaskets seem prudent to do, sight unseen- mine are horrible. i have to assume it's time to do wheel bearings, that steering head bearing goes fast, swingarm bearings might, my isolators are all SHOT, (recently, though)...fork oil should be replaced, seals inspected, intake seals should be replaced as a matter of course,, and cluctch adjustments should all be performed.
all tiebars should be very closely examined, as well.

Old dog

Buell refused to address my problems. I guess my extended warranty is through HD.

Easy,

Court emailed me wanting to help with my situation. I sent him my Vin number and I haven't heard from him as of yet.

Tramp,

I knew my mount broke as my motor dropped an inch or so while riding it,the bike lost power and vibrated like crazy. It felt like it had a flat front tire too. I think what really happened was the mount bolt sheared at the head and when the motor dropped the rocker box hit the mount and broke it. The paint cracking happened before the mount broke.

Thanks for the help guys

Mike

Crusty, good luck with the Uly. I would agree that it is not as pretty as an S3, but it has character. Will the Breva hold up as well as it did once it has 50k on the clock? It just might, but finding parts on the road if problems did arise could be its own challenge. It is interesting that that the xb based bikes are getting a reputation for being reliable, when they just seem to have a few items better sorted than the earlier bikes (like the rockerbox issue). I relly on my tubers every time I ride them so I am constantly seeking ways to bullet-proof them (updated chain tensioner, oil pump, newer isolators, newer exhaust mount, S2 motor mount). I think most of the issues I had were reasonable, except for the isolators. I went through three sets of these in less than 5,000 miles. While BMC was working on vendor issues they kept losing customers and gaining bad press. They finally seem to have developed a real solution with the larger units. Not many new bikes interest me, but with the Uly I am finally buying magazines for their Buell articles again.

my factory isos just went bad in the past year.
what, exactly, went so drastically wrong with these other machines that riders got?

Mfell -- extended warrenty is through a third party, which may not be the same third party from year to year -- you buy it from HDI, who then passes it along to said third party

I've heard of some strange small print on some of these documents -- always pays to read what you're signing I guess

which, of course, doesn't due a thing to solve your problems

my isos didn't LOOK bad (rears), but made a big diff when I changed em after 4 years (I'm guessin atmospheric conditions ate em up) -- front lasted 2 years, then split around the periphery -- ez change, though, so I just consider it a wear item, and have added it to my two-year maint list
