please
i know synth is great and all...
i love it most engines.
i seriously do.
but
please
do NOT use synth in an ironhead.
do not use a multi-grade in an ironhead
(or a BT shovel, pan, knuck, flattie {incl. K}
or any actual indian)
just
use
single
grade
organic.
......
preferably
harley
davidson
or
spectro
v-twin formulation
and no lighter than 50wt., 60 being preferable in
that ironhead.
no synth in antique engines.

I worked at custom machine tool builder that primarily built multi spindle gear driven drill heads for transfer lines and such. Ingersol had certain requirements for heat and noise restrictions. We had trouble meeting the requirements with standard dino oil. The synthetic lowered the temp of the gearboxes by 20 degrees while lowering the noise level by several decibles. The oil was identical weight and manufacturer.

I've been using synthetics in every vehicle since : )

Antiques? Matters what you think is an antique. And, yes, I would use synthetic in just about any vehicle. I ran Mobil 1 in my '79 sporty without a problem. My father-in-law has been using it in his 70 sporty for eons.

Amsoil 20w50 in the engine and primary. It's had the whip put to it quite a bit over the last 30,000 miles, engine & tranny seem to be holding up fine.

steve mckay- antique is not a subjective label- it's a vehicle of or more than a quarter century old.
i have worked on harley davidsons for slightly longer than that...
the shovel and earlier engines were made to be run on single weight lubes.
i ahve no doubt you DID run one on synthetic, just as i have no doubt that a neighbor of mine still lives almost entirely on mcdonald's meals. doesn't make it the best choice, regardless.
i have another neighbor who's a vegetarian (oh, excuse ME..a "vegan. OK- that'sa ll fine and dandy, not the most unhealthy way to eat...plenty of well-versed proponents of that thinking....anyway- she feeds her cats and dog ONLY "vegan" food. I tried to explain to her that carnivores ddon't do well on "vegan" diets, but to her, "vegan" living is the cure-all, so her critters waste away, their kidneys failing misearbly for want of cholesterol and from too much grain....one of her cats died of kidney failure last year, at the 'ripe old age' or 7.
my shop cat gets purina 1 and fresh, cooked chicken parts three times a week, he's 19 and healthy.
any of this getting through?

I met a feller what put multi-weight detergent oil in his Model A, as he thought since it was newer (the oil) it must be better

had to teach him to pour babbit bearings about 200 miles later

I'll suggest he find some chickens

All depends on what state someone is in, and in what state of mind as well.

"..i hope you don't have any antiques..."

Okay, I get the thing about why cats need meat because you stated a reason (the kidney thing).

But the reason for not using synthetic oil in antique engines is still mysterious to me. I can understand why service manuals that pre-date synthetics would not recommend them but did H-D exclude the older engines from their recommendations for using the H-D branded synthetics?

Do I have to use a whole live chicken or can I use parts? and if they have been frozen do I have to cook them after thawing. If its a live chicken how do I get it in. the hole will be a problem. ?

the reason is not because synthetics are merely synthetic-
if you look at my unadulterated post, i state that MULTIGRADES are not right for shovels (and earlier HDs), synth OR organics.
single-grade lubes only in shovels/ironheads
oh, and bruse lee- thank you for that well-resourced and referenced opinion....

You are welcome.

There are straight grade syns that can be used in bikes that specify such grades. Other than a careful transition period from Dino to Syn, I have not read any credible concerns about using syns in older machinery.

You?

Royal Purple makes a 50W syn oil. Amsoil makes a 60W syn.

Dear valued badweb member who can no longer find their post here...

At least two custodians found a post of yours to be some combination of the following:

* tedious
* offensive
* a personal attack
* mean spirited
* peeing on somebodies party
* a troll (sophisticated or otherwise)
* just a general all around piece of crap

We edited it. Figure out how to play by the rules, or we will ban you. And no whining, we will ban you for that also.

Thanks! Have a nice day!
Badweb Custodians.

yikes- looks like i missed something.
i know I called jeremyh "jeremiah" didn't know it would cause any uproar.
all sincere apologies if it did. send me your address, and i'll send you a nice leaf of aloe vera to heal that sense of humour.
my pun was on the name jeremy with an "H" after it, being that it looks, phonetically, like jeremiah, which, incidentally, IS the root name for jeremy.
if synthetic oil works as a skin thickener, i say we all invest in some.
and, bruise easi- lee, I have seen no 50 or 60 wt. synthetic, and i doubt it would be an advantage over organic.

as i posted earlier, re: jeremiah:

i kid.
he's actually a bullfrog, according to hoyt axton, as retold by three dog night, who were named after the lapp gradient for cold, which is based on how many samoyeds it takes to stay warm at night. a really cold night takes three, so they used a lighter oil, often whale-based, but i do feel they'd be better woith a wider-spectrum synthetic, at those temps...

seee- i bas referring to a friendly amphibian, after all, and NOT any badweb poster. can't we all just get along? i promise to help drink anyone's wine!

Seek and you shall find; I posted two well known brands above, which you obviously missed. Regarding syn over organic, that issue has been put to rest for years. Perhaps you should educate yourself before you make yourself look silly! Opps, too late!

Tramp may be an apt name for you after all!

thank you SO much, mr. lee!
golly!
anyway....use organic single weights in shovels, kids.
it's not something that I read in a book...
