well, we certainly gave it a go. up at 1 a.m., watching NASA.gov to see where the shuttle was gonna come down, ready to roll when they committed to California, and we were on the road at 2:40 a.m.

well, the derned thing landed right in front of our noses and we never even saw it. nor did the hundreds of people lined up on either side of us. just a little bit too dark, not enough back-lighting from the early-morning eastern sky to give the thing a proper silhouette. grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

still, it was a very nice 200-mile ride thru the cool, dark Mojave Desert and back, and we were home and eating breakfast by 7 a.m.

ride to lean. ride to roost. ride to ride.

Sorry you didn't get to see it land Jerry.
I went out to see the Enterprise drops and then went out to see the first landing from orbit. Huge crowd like at Laguna. Hours in & out. Sadly there had been threats against the Shuttle and they were patrolling the front of the crowd with vehicles & helicopters with machine guns aimed directly at the crowds.
When the Shuttle comes in right you can hear the double boom in Bakersfield if you listen for it.
From double boom to touchdown seems like about one minute only. It's FAST! Thing has the glide ratio of a brick until they flare at the end of the runway. Then they flew the Enterprise by on the back of the 747 transporter on the way back to Florida.
Should have heard all the hoot'n & holler'n. Met people from all over the States & World.
Then I wound up working up at the Rocket Site above Boron a number of years and saw quite a few Shuttle landings, along with all kinds of other neat stuff.
I'd sure like to see a Shuttle launch some day. That would be quite a show.

He started, with the first sub-orbital, through Friendship 7 and until present sending me a letter from the carrier (when they did sea recovery) postmarked at the time of recovery.

Neat stuff to have framed.

Most interesting guy. School of Architecture named after his father....and I am sure most the Kansas contingent here is aware that if you took the KSU Wildcats outta NASA you'd not be able to launch.
