I'm thinking about taking a one thousand mile ride.
Considering doing it as a straight shot.
Or perhaps stopping in the middle.

Advice? Dissent?

Related question: Is there anyone here that lives just off the Pennsylvania I-80 E/W Turnpike that I could stop & shoot the breeze with and give me a place to take a nap? (I'd rather not have to park at a hotel/motel).

Bradley...me and a couple of friends just did the iron butt....we didn't leave early enough and ended up riding for 16 hours in the rain and dark.....Due to the weather it took us 20 hrs to reach the 1000 mile mark and another 8 to do another 600....we took a 4 hr nap after the 1000...so we ended up doing 1600 miles in 32 hours 28 on the bikes...Everyone was running Corbin Seats and with the cruise control it really wasn't a bad trip at all...

I should mention I guess that I would not be doing this for the sake of iron butt honors. I just want to see something/someone that happens to be that far away. Hence the reference.

I predict you'll only make it 170 miles before you stop.

Midknyte:

Be sure and read the "archive of wisdom" at www.ironbutt.com for tips on long distance riding.

Also a real good idea to read some of the stories there to see what other people have done, what they liked, what they wish they'd done differently, etc.

Midknyte,
I once road from Kansas City KS to Syracuse, NY straight through on I70/I271/I90. Its 1124 miles and it took about 21 - 22 hrs. I think there was something like 20 turns total.

Boring as all get out. I was on leave from the service and had done a 700 mile or so warm up (Killeen TX to Kansas City). I ate junk food, drank coffee, and was all of 21 yrs old. At one point I can vividly remember seeing a tree (that obviously wasn't there ) in the middle of I70 somewhere near Columbus.

Make sure you have a good helmet, ear plugs or better yet, tunes might help pass the time.

Good luck (and do what bomber said)

I did Wisconsin to North Carolina last year, about 1005 miles but I didn't keep records for the official iron butt certificate. I slept close for hours and ate in sitdown interstate gas and go kind of places. I easily made the 24 hour mark. It's not hard at all, just make sure that your bike is in good mechanical shape.

If you left early in the moring, near sunrise it's possible to do the 1000 straight through with no sleeping, but I highly suggest taking a nap along the way.

I ride from Virginia Beach to Mass, and back, a couple times a month...600 miles one way....

My best friend, MP3 player...LOOOONG way with no turns..until I hit the last 18 miles before the house...no straights at all...

Anyway, depending on your setup, depends on how its gonna hit ya....and you physical condition, etc...

Liek was noted..avoid caffeine/heavey sugar, fried foods...
Take breaks when you stop for gas...nothign major...0-15 minutes helps the blood flow back to the butt..stretch, stretch...,

And again, KEEP HYDRATED...get a camel back....Dehydration can speed up fatigue liek no ones bussiness...keeping hydrated keeps the blood thinner, etc...

Other than that, enjoy it...I love the ride, though it makes my tiresd flat in teh middle..., but then again, justa good excuse to to tear the mountains up when I get here...

Oh, and one more thing...Whats her name, and what does she look like...lol

I have taken a few weekenders on my Sportster. One of my favorites was LI to Virginia beach decided to go late one Friday night. Slept on the front lawn of the Dupont Chemical plant on the way down. When we arrived met some girls who drove us around, got drunk, dont really remember where I slept that Saturday night. Sunday afternoon decided maybe its time to get back to LI. I stuffed as may McDonalds hamburgers as I could in every pocket and warmed them up between the cylinders on the way up. I think we made it from VA beach to LI in 6.5 hours only stops were for gas......

As I stated LI as in Long Island...The bulk of the trip went great until I got to Staten Island, crossed the Verazano got to Brooklyn which then it took 2 more hours to go 40 miles.

I averaged a lil' over 50mpg and left my a$$ somewhere in NJ.

When I head up to Loudon the worst part of the trip is getting off and onto Long Island.

Long distance riding is pretty straightforward. No special equipment is needed other than what you usually carry. Don't get too intense about it and get into a rythim. First thing is to know your true range on the bike. I organize stops around half of that range. Food than Gas, fill up before you start. Keep it simple, gas and food is two steps and too long in the saddle for truel long distances. From your range, find your gas stops on a map ahead of time. If you go west don't plan on gas after dark in small towns. Have fun, you will meet fascinating people and have many stories to tell. The true one won't be believable so work on interesting lies. Avoid big cities. And enjoy the trip.

Bomber - Nope, you weeren't alone. I thought they misspelled butterfly when I first read the subject. I have that album, talk about some long, disjointed solos... I have a lot of good albums and don't own a turntable anymore. My sons are both lurking for eventual possession. And then there are my 45's...

I have been studying the issues with closed cell foam rubber types and Indentation Load Density (ILD) numbers. I'm thinking about "tweaking" the seat on my M2. I think that low area where my posterior sets (in front of the "ledge" where it rises to the higher level) needs more padding of better quality and with a higher ILD. Here is a good link if anyone wants to read up on foam rubber types.

I don't have any issues with leg length on the M2 so I think if I eliminate the low spot and go to a better type of foam, it will work for me. I'd like it to look pretty much like the original seat.

I did the Saddlesore 1,000 (1,000 miles in 24 hours) when I was 16 on my XB9S. Whats really going to matter is your physical and mental conditions before, and during the ride.

Be sure to look up the Archive of Wisdom on the IBA site, and check out a few endurance rider message boards for everything you could possibly want to know about your ride and what to expect.

PROPER HYDRATION IS KEY, as well as the occasional snack and bit o' rest. Its really a straightfoward activity. You just need to know when to reconize fatique and when to stop.
Cheers

Man, when do we get to the bridge of sighs? or was it,I can't find that confounded bridge, aahhhh I got blisters on me fingers

Yeah I thought we'd have 18 minutes of cool music. It would make a good music choice for an LD ride

"You know you're tired when you're trying to modulate the engine to the sounds of the drums in your head"

Said by a friend who was a drummer after a long ride we did regarding the aforementioned tune above.

(At least that's how I remember it, 'course I was on a '42 Knucklehead hardtail at the time so who really knows what the truth is.)

airhawk is a good accy for long distance, if you're interested -- easily deployed for when needed, easily put up when not

disjointedis putting it kindly -- buncha fellas playing at the same time, at the same place, but that's about all the same there was ;-}

sumpin tells me there was milk and Oreo consumption of Homeric proportions durint that session

This is part question part opinion- Is it possible to be TOO COMFORTABLE.... When I ride my Hardtail I dont think its possible to fall asleep but my teeth and eyeballs continue to rattle for a good 1/2 hour after I get off. I couldnt see going further the 75-100 miles on that bike. My Sportster Ive done 1000 mile plus weekends to New England & VA. Not bad, I have a factory HD Seat and no windscreen. The limited time on my Buell XB9R(before switching to Race Only) was a pleasure, most comfortable "Sportbike" I have ever riden.
NOW my too comfortable comparison, I took my fathers 03' Electra Glide out for a day of touring and found myself wanting to nod off. The bike is like a Lazy Boy with wheels. Can you be too comfortable????

Yeah, the Airhawk might work. I'm sort of playing around with it for now. I have some closed cell foam, made a small pad, and it feels pretty good. leadbutt usually starts setting in in 2-3 hours. Part of it is wearing Levis and having a wallet in my pocket and stuff like that.

I do a lot better in the car if I'm in something like sweat pants but that's not going to work on a bike.

Wait, I got it! Wear sweat pants and chaps! :>; )

Brad-
A couple of years ago a buddy and I rode from N.E. Iowa across 80 to East Stroudsberg, PA. Right at 1,100mi. We started out to do it straight thru but got caught in a terrible thunderstorm crossing from Chicago into Indiana and called it quits in Cleveland.

There is a good Badwebber (who's name escapes me at the moment) who works at the Buell dealer there.

On the way home we took off in the morning at 7 and made it home by 1am. You can make good time on the interstate if you stretch your gas stops and keep them short. I did it on my '99 S3 with the stock seat.
