Well, I have gone through my 4th O2 senosr since MAY....

I dont know if its bad gas...or crap in the tank, or what...

BUT, I am glad Bosch has a lifetime warranty on their O2 sensors.... though I suspect I will be getting a call concerning why i am going through so many.... of that, I have no answer....

I just cant wait to convert to carb.... though the lack of a reserve will really drive me nuts...

I dont wanna have to carry a 22mm or 7/8 wrench and a spare sensor, but its looking like thats what I am gonn ahave to do....

Try using a 4 wire sensor, they respond faster and you don't have to depend on the pipe for a ground. (Unless Buell already uses a 4 wire - I have a carb...)

Chase,
Are you using race gas? Lead kills O2 sensors as does silicone vapors. How are you testing the O2 sensor to determine failure?

if you run a 3 or 4 wire then you'll need to use a relay. One of the wires is 12v to heat the sensor.

NO race gas, just 93(or if I cant find any, 91) as I am told she will run like crap on anythign lower....

How am I testing it? Well, after getting suspect gas, she started running liek dog crap... figured, pull the sensor(warranty), and try a new one, reset the AFV, and it ran good, same thing happened again...adn same result...so....

I have checked the header mounting....everything is good....

So, Iam out of ideas....

And its a one wire sensor....

If I'm not mistaken, I tested mine with a propane torch when I suspected it was bad. heating it changes the resistance. I'm sure it's covered in the KV.

I have run into problems with Bosch sensors in the past if they weren't the original manufacturer of the fuel system and once with an aftermarket Bosch sensor for a late model BMW, you might want to try another brand or an O.E. one. I think bosches aftermarket stuff is made to a price point for for places like AutoZone and Pepboys. Alternatively you could get a Digital Volt ohm meter and splice into the sensor wire and create a secure ground and mount for the DVOM and see what it is sending the ECU. it should fluctuate rapidly between .2 and 1V DC. IF it hangs below .5V it's an indication you could have a vacuum leak, above .5V and it's too rich and then I would look at the ET sensor and IAT sensors. HTH.

But your not actually checking to see if the O2 sensor is the failure point, your simply replacing a part that appears to work for a time then go bad. It means your missing something somewhere up the stream. If you pull out the O2 sensor and its mostly black, its fouling out due to a rich condition, which could be a leaky injector. If its coming out dusted in white and still fouled out, you have a really bad lean condition that is melting the sensor and hopefully nothing else. Make certain that your sensor is in fact bad.

Its coming out grey-white....

The rear header is discolored a ways up the pipe(most of the way through the bend)....

Running, American Sport Bike Air Cleaner, Race ECM, adn D&D, I have the race header, but have yet to install it, untill I figure out what the problem is....

The plugs look normal though...

Has a new HT sensor, maybe I can look inot the IAT sensor...

AS well as check on an O2 from Harley(OEM)....

Other than that... I do plan to switch to carb, mostly becuase I can tune that...but who knows when I will be able to do that...

Here comes my 2 cents worth.. When my X1 was new I went through 3 in 2000 miles I found a young BUELL mech. he re set my idle up to 1050 RPM that was 35000 miles back I have not any more problem.

OK, well, I know I can get my hands on an intake and carb, jsut have to get the mounting bracket..

Anyway, OK, reset the AFV, 3000 for 15 miles, 5th gear...

Went to visit a friend( I am fixing his 05 gixer 750..nasty crash)...

Went to start it, would stay running, it woudl idle LOW, MAYBE 500...and die..needed throttle everytime to start it... kept it running witht he throttle, and got on the road...was GUTLESS, till about 3rd...and the power came on without warning, providing for an interesting sight for spectators...

Uneventfull the rest of the ride home(11 miles, 9 or which were highway), nice idle etc...

I ordered a new IAT, shoudl be in in 5-7 days... and they have the head temp in stock..(though this one is brand new)...

This is the last sensor..period....

I dont know what else to do...I HATE FUEL INFECTION...everyone thinks I am nuts for trying to gather the parts to convert to carb...but I jsut dont know what else to do...and of course, Harley service is backed up into August.. Well, I deployagain next month, and am NOT losing any riding time...rian shine whatever....

Are you actually testing the sensors to see if they are good or not, or just spending the moeny for a new sensor? For all you know, it could be a loose wire somewhere and your spending cash on parts that are not bad. The service manual tells you how to test the sensors. I understand totally about you wanting to convert to a carb, but what I am worried about is you swapping in a carb, and still having runability issues because there is some underlying issue that you haven't found. So now you have spent all that money for the carb, and still haven't got a running bike. For instance, checking the voltage signal for the O2 sensor at the sensor, and then again at the wire going into the ECM. What happens if you check the voltage at the sensor, and its good, but when you check it at the ECM, its off? The same with the IAT and head temp sensor. Maybe you have a stuck valve in the head that is causing it to run lean for a bit. It sticks intermittently or only after its gotten up to temp. Or an intake leak or some other mechanical gremlin. Timing pickup missing on occasion, or some other such problem. Basically just changing out sensors doesn't pin point the problem, it only band aids it and well band aids fall off.

At the moment, I am without a way to check voltage. I onlypaid for one O2 sensor, the head temp was like 14 buck, and the IAT is 12...no big deal...

As far as the carb, manifold, and S1 harness, that'll all be free, just gonna buy the crane iggy, and mounting bracket, and I have a stock carb iggy for now....

BUT, I will try to get my hands on a multimeter, adn check the voltage at the sensor, AND at the ecm....

BTW, intake seals are good...

If you have killed 4 sensors then I would suspect a different part of the system is failing.

Could be something as simple as a bad ground somewhere on the electrical system. Not necessarily the FI systems either.

I'd check all grounds on the wiring harness before ditching the FI. I haven't heard of this kind of failure or read about it.

Review the X-1 files, I'm sure someone has the link, there is a lot of good information over there.

still waiting on the bike to be running right turns out I've got a short in a wire cluster , but damb does that exhaust sound good.
