my '99 X1 has just under 2k miles on it (just got it used a few weeks ago), thus, the same can be said for the belt. Questions: Is it normal wear for the black coating to rub off on the sides? Is it normal wear for there to be threads sticking out, like 1/8 in. in a couple of spots?

Been riding a ton, with plans to keep that pace, love the bike so much and I just want to make sure I keep her road-worthy with pre-emptive maintenance as I can't really stand the thought of missing out while the weather is good! Thanks in advance...

normal to wear off the black, yes.

normal for threads to stick out? --- sort of.

some fibers of the cord will fray off the outside. that's fine. (it looks a little "hairy"; )

but if it appearrs whole belt cords are getting chewed up that's bad.

You might want to check the alignment of the rear wheel.

Ditto. Invest in a vernier caliper & verify that your rear wheel is properly aligned. Also, check belt tension according to the service manual. You'll need the tension gauge, P/N 40006-85, $19.95 retail. Will need to get the rear wheel up off the ground to properly measure deflection, and measure in 4 spots around the belt. Make your adjustment based on the tightest spot.

Thanks for the information. The fraying is very minor, it doesn't appear to be whole belt cords whatsoever. I will be getting the caliper & tension guage. Belt tension is pretty tight when I'm sitting on the bike (I weigh about 260 w/ riding gear), there is about an inch of deflection when I'm not sitting on the bike, but I can still deflect the belt enough to touch the forward part of the swingarm...that said, I'll feel better with those measuring bits in my garage. I love buying tools.

Your belt is too tight.
Loosen it up ASAP.
Too tight can cause lots of problems.
Very common for people(non Buellers) to have the belt set up too tight.
It should slap the swingarm.
Get the tools to set it up right but loosen it some for now.
Better a little loose than too tight.

Okay, since we are on the subject and I don't have to search the archives about the drive belt, does the drive belt stretch at all? Mine has started squeaking when I'm slowing down. The noise seems to be coming from the front pulley. Any thoughts?
Bob
P.S. Its a 1997 s3t with I believe the original belt which seems to be in pretty good shape, no fraying or stuff.

In my experience they actually get tighter not looser the more you drive them.. So I think the heat actually causes the belt to shrink not stretch.

So maybe my belt may be a little tight then?
