Any car sales people out there? We are looking to buy a Mercury Sable wagon. Somthing newer than 2000 with less than 50000 miles. Under 2000 milke would be good. I have seen one Dealer driven 2005 with 5000 miles on it, full warrenty, never titled for $14000. I also see a 2002 with 56000 for $11500. Anyone have any ideas what a 2005 with zero might might really go for? It is getting late in the model year and all. Dave |

Dave - Kelly Blue Book can give you very close numbers for what you are looking for. You will be able to negotiate from those figures. WWW.kbb.com |

dave just my 2 cents look for something else......sable, taurus, platform not a great choice...#1 be ready for transmission and a/c work, and when your ready to sell expect squat. my brother is a car dealer. he just bought a mint sho taurus 35,000 miles 98 model, totally loaded for 3500.00......like i said though just my 2 cents....oh and by the way deduct about 1500.00 to 2000.00 from kelly blue book it's way inflated.....at least here in fla. mike |

I agree with apex.. My mechanic's prospective.. Not a great choice for the follow reasons.. 1) transmissions 2) a/c manifolds are known to develops cracks 3) powersteering pumps (noisy, go out) 4) IAC motors on Ford products in general are problematic. 5) starters There are other issues but that is the main reasons they are in the shop. Newer models are better ( but they are new, give it 5 years).. Given the track record on this platform I would be careful. |

I am looking for a wagon with a third seat, not many choice there. I like the lack of resale value, I can get a low milage 2002 for very cheap. Buying new seems like a bad deal because the values drop so fast. Thanks for the info on the trannies, the consumer report numbers don't look so bad, I will have to look closer at them. |

I agree with the transmission problems. I had the tranny go out on my Taurus- Big Bucks. And you will get nothing on the other end when it's time to sell. |

Have you considered a Chrysler PT Cruiser?? IMHO they are a very versatile vehicle. |

Have you considered a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Doesn't have the third row seating. Seems this is pretty much limited to the Ford unless you go to the expensive imports like the Volvo XC or a minivan. The nice minivans, the Toyoto and Honda are very pricey. |

Does that new Chevy Malibu wagon have the third seat? Apart from the cost, does the Dodge Magnum have a 3rd seat as well? There is a used car dealership in Newburg off hwy-33 between Saukville and West Bend that has a ton of station wagons. Don't know how they are to deal with, but they gots wagons right now. Just on the west end of Newburg right on 33. Might be worth the drive just to see what they have. |

Dave, regarding buying used: I heard "Click and Clack" (car guys on public radio) say that buying a used car 3 years old and keeping it 3 years was the best strategy from a financial standpoint. Supposedly this takes into account depreciation and reliability. Makes sense to me. I had an 87 Taurus sedan. Transmission detonated at ~110,000 miles, but it had gotten low on fluid a few months earlier. Trans shop that fixed mine said later transmissions were better. I went through 2 or 3 A/C evaporators (required complete dash removal to replace). In the car's favor, the upholstery looked like new after 8 years, car handled well, engine (3.0 L V-6) was bulletproof, had decent power, and got consistent 30 MPG on the highway. |

FYI, I know you are looking at a wagon... but hows this for reliabilty My tooper with 220k on it... Just had the tranny rebuilt last year, with 212 on it... developed its fisrt oil leak...at 213...small... Lifted 7 inches.. running 33s or 35s, whatever my mood when I buy tires(currnelty 33s), beat on regularly.... Get rid of it...no... Gutless wonder, yeah...but who cares, its an SUV not a car.... My 2 cents...thoguh I doubt anyone cares..lol Chase |
