I work for a research company, and a potential client wants to interview uniformed officers regarding apparel choices. Here's my question. What percentage of police officers are uniformed (street cops, traffic enforcement, patrol cops) versus those who are not (detectives, internal affairs)? My guess for the purposes of the estimate is 80% uniformed 20% not uniformed My boss thinks I'm way off. He thinks it's more like 60-40. What's the ratio in your departments? What do you think the national average is? Thanks for your help. (I warned you it was an odd question!) Best wishes, Charles |

Have a total of 102 sworn officers in our P.D. 14 Detectives 2 det supervisors Chief and deputy chief 2 doing crime scene rest are in uniform. looks as if your guess is right on. At least for my place. Now if you figure NYPD the ratio will be very hard to determine due to so many guys on different details and a tremendous detective division. Send your client questions my way... gone through 4 uniforms in 5 months can give alot of input on what would most improve durability and such. |

my brother's an nypd det.,- that dep't. has closer to a 70/30 split. i, personally, am always shocked by beat cops (in smaller cities) who have to wear those old-timey polyester long pants and button shirts. why can't more guys wallking the beat wear those nice BDU shorts and pique-knit polos? looks more professional, it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cooler, and a beat cop in bdus with decent cop sneaks looks more likely to run a guy down than the poor fool in the smokey uniform. ..they should also be given the option of 100% cotton stuff, 'pecially when kevlar's underneath it all. I know, I know, it doesn't last as long, but i'll bet your average heat would prefer to go through a few cotton BDUs instead of sweltering in the 50/50 garbage. holy melting ballsack, batman. |

There is a LEO discussion forum out there somewhere. There was a link to it not too long ago in one of the Quick Board topics about some outrageous statement made by a LEO or something. |

Varies by city. New Orleans, if I recall, has a primarily plainclothes, PD. NYPD has thousands of plain clothes police. They drive around in cars with blacked out windows and dress like Serpico. I got pulled over (yes, Tom, the lights) recently and they "storm" the car. I was looking at the guy coming up to my side in the mirror and one of them whipped the passenger door open......well armed. Me?...I'm glad they're here. Hmmmmmm...I'll bet the 75/25 may work here. Police departments are deeply rooted in tradition, this is one of the main reasons the uniforms tend not to change. The Boston police blue with a pair of modified (strait legged)BDUs is what I have worn for the past five years and I don't expect it to change any time soon; that's the way the Chief wants it, that's how he gets it. Tramp brought up the use of actual BDU pants (baggy, bloused at the bottom), one of arguments against them is that they look too militant, making the street officer appear less approachable. For those who know the joys of running through the woods after some meathead, a comfortable pair of BDUs would be a welcome change. |

reason i cut the NYPD split higher toward plainclothes is for the 'softclothes' guys on 'streetcrimes' detail (which has it's roots in the SNAG {Street Narcotics And Guns} days of the 80s NYPD), who are neither Detectives nor suits, but guys in t-shirts and jeans making smaller busts in the long wake of Rudy's old 'quality of life' initiative right through the safir heyday. then you have the truly undercover DTs and DTs-to-be. The NYPD boats the world's finest detective force, and I believe there may be some merit to said boast. there is an enormous corps of cops in softclothes in The Big Apple... Thanks for that BDU explanation, Felix. female cops in BDUs are hot. (Message edited by tramp on June 25, 2005) |
