Buells Rule!

Been using woodworking tools my entire life & have had my share of cuts & screwups but holy crap can a handheld electric planer ever mess up your day.

Installing a couple of new doors in my garage & needed to plane a few shims down. Got about halfway down & set the plane down & for some stupid reason placed the damn thing on my left hand while the blade was slowing down. Took a pretty darn good chunk out of my left index finger tip. Wrapped it up quick & drove my butt to the hospital where they stitched up the remains & sent me on my way. Finger is throbbing like hell now........oh well live & learn to not do something so stupid next time.

BTW...these things do a great job for installing doors & windows, much better & smoother than the old fashioned hand jobbers. Just dont get your digits in the way.

Ouch! I have one too & its the kind of tool where you don't really see the moving parts so it's easy to forget when you are distracted. A couple of months ago my son-in-law tripped over the cord of his nail gun & put one into his thigh. happens.

Maybe I should be like one of these morons who go around suing everyone? Gee Makita I didnt know those blades where so sharp & spun so quickly. Who woulda thunk you could get cut so easily by metal blades spinning at 20,000 rpms?

Nope, I take my lumps & move on. Next time I will be more careful.

Sorry to hear about your incident. Thank God it wasn't worse.

If you ever need a laugh, watch me work with electricity.

Sorry to hear you got planed!

My router is the tool that scares the crap out of me. I have no problem with table saws, nail guns, chop saws, you name it. But whipping that router around gives me the heebie-jeebies every time. I can just picture the thing getting away from me and getting drug across my thigh. *shudder*

Glad you are more or less OK and intact.

Dyna,
I recently bought/used a power planer.
I had the same feeling when I spooled it up the first time.
I actually made a mental note to keep my paws clear when it was running.
I had to take 3/16 off each side edge of 8 doors.
I made up a special door holding jig just so I could keep both hands on the planer.

Glad to hear the damage was realitively minor. Still sucks to lose hide though.....

OUCH!! That hurts just thinking about it.

Reep, I hear ya about the routers, ever hit a knot & have the router spit the board at you?

Bill....some folks are fun to watch with electricity...my wife hates watching me replace outlets & switches...I dont kill the power, hell its only 110 & just gives you a little jolt.

"Nope, I take my lumps & move on. Next time I will be more careful."

Wow, it is rare these days to see people who take responsibility for their own actions.
I tip my hat to you Sir.

Now no more manicures with the electric planer ok.

Dyna ouch! I did that with an industrial version at my uncles cabinet shop when I was around 14 or so. That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger and hopefully smarter.

Dyna; glad you're ok - less a bit of flesh : )

I've been using power tools for years, and often have to remind myself that, while I've become comfortable using most of them - absentmindedness can become quite "uncomfortable" - like when you drill through a block of wood, forgetting your hand is right underneath.

OUCH! I know how that one can be - I've been doing custom woodwork for about a quarter century, and once I got my finger too close to one side of the planer blades, I was real lucky in that it only made a few shallow cuts. As I always told any new trainees - "Meat is softer than wood!" I've seen some truly nasty stuff that I will not bother to relate here.

Heal up soon Dyna! Hey - us motorcycle enthusiasts can handle ENORMOUS amounts of pain! Except, well, unless it starts to actually hurt!

Glad to hear it wasn't worse! Like a thumb, or pulling back a nub...

Personally, I don't play well with power tools ( or that don't play with me well). Everyone gives me crap, since I use hand tools while working on cars.

I have all my fingers and no striped or broken bolts.. (damn ranken students.. :P)

Might be a little slower, but that might be old age...

What really sucks is I spent all day friday in a 30' boomlift cutting down a huge tree in my backyard. You would think between the lift, the falling limbs, 2 chainsaws, etc that I would have somehow found a way to hurt myself. But nope, not a scratch all day long. But use 1 tiny little powertool & hack myself up.

Course then tonight the wife & I were watching tv & a mosquito lands on me so I do the natural thing & smack it.......with my left hand like an idiot. And as expected the blood starts flowing right through all the bandages...so I tape them up some more & curse myself for being a dolt today.

I feel your pain. I'm sure there's a new club you can join. I once put my hand down on a running table saw. They rejoined everything successfully though! That taught me a lesson about running potentially hazardous tools and machines when I'm tired or in the wrong frame of mind. Sounds like all day up a 30' boom was enough off the honey-do for you!

This is the boomlift I rented for the day, weighs about 3,000 lbs & can be towed behind just about any truck. Has a max height of somewhere around 30'. Pretty useful piece of equipment.

Sorry about your mishap!!

Aint' them lifts fun.

Got into a mild scuffle with a small table saw once. She kicked the piece back, broke my right thumb, put a real nice black/blue/yellow bruise on my left collarbone, and flew another 30 or so feet through the garage, nearly taking out a window in the back of the garage.

Totally knocked me on my azz!

Be careful out there....

It's easy to replace a screwed up piece of wood,
but it isn't so easy to replace missing flesh.

The mother in-lawnow tells me "don't you be messin with them power tools while we are at work" everytime she and my wife leave together. My Dremel tool is the one that scares the hell outta me. Too small, too fast, and too quick to eat flesh before my mind can register the "hey idiot move your palm outta the way" pain!
Lessons learned could fill a book, and I thought it was just me.

Dyna,
Glad to hear you kept all your digits. If you lost the middle finger you wouldn't be the same guy : )
I almost lost my middle finger a while back - they asked me if the surgery on the tendons wasn't successful, and they had to fix it in place, did I have a preference - bent or straight - I looked at the Dr. and he he said "Straight, of course"
