many of you who regularly peruse the Quick Board, or the Mariposa, CA and/or Porterville, CA "Home Town" threads in Tale Section, and/or who have sniffed around the last two years' Oktoberfast threads, are familiar with the photographic and artistic works of David and Charlotte Hoffman. Dave goes by "Dino" here on BADWEB, on account of...well, that's a story for another time.

i met Dino entirely by chance several years back whilst out doing recon for the BRAG All-California Touring Adventure, and this fluke meeting up in the wilds of the Sierra Nevadas has developed into a wonderful friendship between me 'n D and he and Char, which has led to, as BADWEB seems to be so good at, lasting friendships betweeen themselves and many other fine folks who hang out in this neighborhood.

one of the cool things about Dino is that he's a giver. those of you who have picked his brain here on BADWEB on matters related to photography surely have appreciated his soft, articulate, knowledgeable ways. one of the reasons that i admire Dino so much is that he never, EVER blows his own horn, so to speak, a noble yet pesky character trait that i seem not to possess in particular abundance.

in that vein, then, i feel it's my duty, and it's certainly an honor, to announce that over this past weekend at the prestigious Tri-County Art Exhibition sponsored by the Yosemite Western Artists, "our" very own Dino took home 1st Place in the "Photography - Color" competition AND added some icing to the cake with an Honorable Mention in the same category, AND his lovely wife Char took home 3rd Place honors in the "Mixed Media - Pencil / Ink / Pastel" category.

i'm very much amped for them by this and felt compelled to share the wonderful news to their friends here on BADWEB, as i know they wouldn't even BEGIN to think of turning the spotlight their direction in this manner on their own.

as always i've tried to sprinkle a little humor into my words here today, but when i say that Dave and Char are admirably humble and modest, and tremendous friends, and kind to every living creature, i am as serious as i can be.

hope they don't mind that i took this liberty -- guess it'll be a test of our friendship.

again, congrats to Dino and Char. without further adude, here's (a scaled-down version of) the 1st Place photograph:

Now that's photography!
Congrats on the awards, they look to be very deserved.
Most folks take snapshots,a few are gifted with the "Eye". Those folks take photographs.
Me, I tend to lean toward the snapshot side of the split.

Dino definately has the "Eye".

Dino and Char,
Awesome work, congrats! I've always got a smile on my face when I see your pics of your lil part of California, even HAPPIER that I got to ride with you for a bit. Keep the pics coming, all that I've seen are awesome. So Dino sorta swept the boards with is photos and Char placed an awesome third? Any chance we might see a picture of her "Mixed Media - Pencil / Ink / Pastel" placer? I've seen a few pics from, if I remember correctly, Octoberfast artwork, which was awesome!
Alex

Alex, i'm not sure which piece garnered Char her ribbon - i hope Dino chimes in when he gets a chance and lets us all have a peek. : )

in the meantime, this is Char's first piece from last year's Oktoberfast, which i'm pleased to say now resides here at the ThunderDome:

this piece, entitled "Sunday Scrubbing", is also from Char from last year's O'fast ride.

this artwork now has a place of honor in Unibear's home, fitting since he is last bike in the train, scrubbing in the rear tire that American Sport Bike Al helped him install under very demanding conditions at Montecito Lodge the night before!

(a great story, but Glenn should tell it, and it's BEST told over copious amounts of very good beer. : ) )

Ferris,
The first pic was the one I was thinking of, but I remember seeing both. The first reminded me of the Lion's Tale. The tale behind the first pic was 'which is Ferris's head' or something? Haven't heard the UB story.

Oh, you and UB suck! Awesome artwork. Goddamn we had some good times. Best birthday ever for one of our group. Will shoot you back an email tomorrow. I STILL have some stuff I've got to mail you. I SUCK!

Ahem...I'm not sure how to respond except to say that I'm gonna have to lay some serious whoop- on that FB character next time I see him.

That said, I don't mind tootin' Char's horn a bit. (... ummm, is it okay to say that? It just sounds kinda ... well, never mind.) Anyway, I am glad you you reminded me about Char's piece. (Damn, that didn't sound right, either.) Her entry was really a watercolor that she put in the Mixed Media category because it also included a bit of pen and ink. She did the piece as a bit of a lark ... nothing serious, just a fun piece. Well, i saw it and absolutely loved it. So, when she was trying to decide what pieces to enter in the competition, I recommended it ... and it placed! Too cool!

Now, the reason I'm pleased that you reminded me of it is that it occurred to us that we weren't sure if we'd photographed the piece for our records before we put it in the show. I was going to check the files and shoot it if we haven't already. So, expect to see it here on this thread in the very near future. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

...and thanks for the kudos.

Dino

Too cool. We need a BadWeB photo gallery to display our highest quality photographic artwork in full glory. Need some curators who are willing to create and manage it. Been tossing that idea around for some time. Any volunteers?

Wow. I'm not a photographer, but I can certainly tell that the pic above is a good one : ).

I thought about sleeping at a holiday inn last night... Does that count?

Blake, when I first saw your post I was thinking that Jim would be a great asset to such a project, due to both his photographic skills and his experience putting up his own gallery. I'd certainly be interested in tossing around some ideas with others who may be interested in shaping this concept. Jim and I can conscript FB, regardless of his inclinations. I know there are others out there ... how 'bout it?

What we need are some of you guys from the northern states. Heck, y'all got nothing to do 6-7 months of the year anyway, 'cept stare out the window at all the snow and ice!

I'm fairly new here but would be more than happy to help out whereever, however and whenever I can. Yes, I'm one of the unfortunate notherners (NE Ohio).

Congrates to you and your wife as well!

As promised, this is the painting that took a 3rd for Char. For you non-painters, that is a bamboo handled Japanese brush on the right.

Dino,
Being a non painter, I didn't recognize that brush. I am used to a 12" nap roller and a few gallons of textured paint for a garage floor...

Very cool painting!
