Misery loves company, so post your saddest stories of loss, betrayal, or choice.

Here's what I'm giving up...
malibu

I bought her in '97 in the heyday of my single life. Simple, reliable, and good-looking, she's always been the coolest car on the block wherever I've lived. She still is, but now I have a family and a 100 year-old house that sure could use the limited time & money I have. The car's languishing and won't get better with time. It also takes up a lot of space in the city. Time to go.

Too bad that the acts of washing, driving and photographing it for sale make the process harder. I come by it honestly: my father still has just about every car he's ever owned parked somewhere on his country "estate", in various states of decay, and if I had the space and low overhead he does I would probably do the same.

The silver lining to this cloud: I get to keep the Buell.

The following is true:

When I was a little kid, like maybe 4 years old, I had a finger puppet named George. George was blue. I believe he was a rooster or a bird of some sort. I misplaced George while playing in Montgomery Wards as my mom and sisters were shopping. We looked and looked...but alas, George was not be be found. I went home in shock and horror, knowing that somewhere in that store George was lying helpless...waiting for me to come back and get him. I never did.

Oh, then there's the time my '67 cherry Plymouth Satellite that my dad bought me as a 16th Birthday present got stolen.

Mine was exactly the same:

It was 1988 ....
I had the fastest 2 stroker in high school. 50cc was the limit with max speed of 28mph. But that was for wimps. Mine was a german import 80cc that did over 60mph.

My older brother needed to go somewhere and asked me if he could borrow it. Well, he got caught, the cops stripped it (cylinder, piston, carb and exhaust) and my brother wasn't able to pay for the damage. Since I was in high school I couldn't afford to fix it so I had to sell it.

A year or 2 later I got work and got into the old stuff like this:

I had found a special one with a 5-gear box which was really rare. I spent most of my money on that those (at one time I had seven of those). One of them was a 70cc, my dad helped tune it and it finally did over 70mph. I remember quite well the day that a motorbike pulled up next to me and gave me a thumps up. 5 minutes later the engine seized and I had to walk it home. I then decided to part from it for good. Believe it or not but I was crying ... it hurt to see this dude load up his truck with my toys.

Know how it goes... got a 1976 Chevy Stepside up for sale as well. 427 pushing over 700hp before hitting the nitrous. Hate to sell but my kids come first. At least for the next 7&1/2 years... son turns 18. Then I'm outta here. I've been doing this about ten years now and have sold almost everything that I enjoy/value. The Buell and this machine stays though! My only sanity check I have.

Buellkowski apiece of advice DONT SELL THE CAR!!
A lot of my friends sold their muscle cars when they got married to buy house or family cars they all regreted it later because they can never be replaced. When I got married in 1985 I had a 1968 olds 442 that I bought in 1979 told the wife I would not sell car, that she would go before the 442. Seventeen years later she left and I still have the car and now also a Buell and never been happier.

You will just P.SS the money away on food and other crap like I did when I sold my 68 Shelby.

Some how I don't regret it though.

I'll always regret parting company with my first 'Vette...yellow '59 with removable hard top.

Keep the car. Throw a cover over it to keep the dust off. You can find another similar to it in the years ahead, but it won't be the one you have now with all the associated memories.

...and those memories will make the care more dear than you can imagine

...imagine Hwy 1 at 3AM with the top off, just rolling through the curves watching the moon and the waves; or rolling through the orange fields in the Spring during the bloom or streaking across the desert towards Vegas or snaking through the canyons of Zion working towards SLC or just sitting at the local ballfield and looking over your shoulder at a crowd of kids standing around with their Dad's just walking around the car and imagining themselves driving...

1942 Wurlitzer Juke Box, "The Rainbow Bubbler". Played 78's. Bought it for $50 the year I was married, 1970. Moved it a coupla times (heavier than a refrigerator) but the wife hated it from the start. She was jealous of the time and attention I spent on it. That's my theory. Sold it for $75. Kicked myself every day since. Told her she owes me one. Looking at around $4000 for one in the same shape.

I got a '78 Camaro (fuel injected 355) that has been gaurding the floor of my garage for the better half of the last two years. Every time I look at it I think, I could sell you and pay off some debt. Then I washed and cleaned it and had to take it for a spin. Man that is just rough...

Hey, I've got a 78 Camaro too, a Z. I've had it since 1980 and I can't get myself to let it go.

i have more toys now after getting married than ever before....... here's the secret......find a woman that doesn't want kids and loves toys.

Before getting married i had my beloved little tweaked out rice burner that i loved to death.

After getting married i have accrued a new truck, a new mazda rx-8, a new jet boat and three new motorcycles, and oh yeah i am on my second home. i have been married years.

During a couple of times when money was a little tight I have sold toys that I wish now I hadn't. My 1970 Monte Carlo(sold in 1998). After the birth of our last of 5 kids I sold my Condor tunnel hull jetboat in 1999 because it was finally to impractical as a family boat(much to my wifes joy). In 1989 I sold my 1952 BMW r-51 with matching sidecar. I regret selling them all. There is a difference in selling because you move on and selling because of money issues. I'll never sell my buell unless I seriously find another bike that makes me grin so much when riding it, definatley not because of money or kids.

I had all my toys before I got married. That way they're all still mine if she comes to her senses! If I could have one more bike I'd have all the toys I could ever possibly want.
