I was out for a ride today with a couple buddies (me on my M2, an R6 and a road king bringing up the rear). We were cruising along at a moderate pace on the back roads, making sure we weren't pushing our friend on the hog. Me and the R6 went up over a hill and we pulled over cause we didn't see the road king, we waited a minute, then turned back around. We pulled up to a bit of a mess, his bike on the side of the road and him laying in the middle of the road. A bunch of people had already stopped and were helping him. It was amazing how many people stopped with knowledge of how to take care of him. We were pretty lucky in that respect. Ambulances seemed to take forever, and he was eventually flown to the hospital...broken collar bone, broken ankle, couple broken ribs and roadrash. When we left, they had just done another CT scan (?) to make sure his neck was ok. He is definitely in pain and will be laid up for a while, but I think he will be ok. Apparently some fella thought my buddy was turning and pulled out in front of him, not realizing the three of us were together. He swerved, but not quite far enough. The police officer said that a witness stated "the 2 sport bikes were doing in excess of 100 mph". NOT A CHANCE, we both replied, we weren't even doing the speed limit (50) cause of the traffic and our buddy on the road king. We were looking out for him and keeping things slow. He just took the motorcycle safety course a couple of weeks ago. I'm just grateful he had a helmet, leather jacket, gloves and heavy boots on. When the tow truck picked up his bike it had 250 miles on it and I think about 50 of that was put on during our ride. I wasn't too happy about the sport bike comment, and I just wanted to vent. Nerves are still a little jumpy. Be careful out there. | ||

Sorry to hear about your friend, but it could have been worse..Hopefully it doesn't turn him off bikes for good. I hope he heals quick and gets back on his pig..  | ||

Going from a hog (well, a V-Rod, wet hog?) to a sport bike, I have noticed a slight change in attitude from cagers, just like my former insurance company thinks, sport bikes only go 100mph+ and are crazy riders. And women on cell phones doing make-up not signaling or looking during lane changes have lower rates. Sorry for the rant, I am watching Dennis Leary. Hope the 'King rider heals and gets back to riding. If he keeps riding with ya, he'll change bikes.  | ||

Sorry to hear about your friend. Even if you were going 100, what does that have to do with a car turning in front of the other guy? | ||

The 100mph comment sound like someone trying to rationalize how the car could be at fault. If you listen to the news, it's us crazy motorcyclists terrorizing the streets of innocent SUV drivers, when if you look at who gets sited by law enforcement, the inattentive person in the SUV is more often at fault. Single bike accidents are the riders fault, but when a cage gets involved, you can put your money on the fact that the cager screwed up. I hope your friend gets well soon and I am glad it was not worse. A friend of mine wiped out on his new HD bike (also first bike) and broke his shoulder. After healing up and a new attitude to listen to his more experienced friends, he now is a great rider and continues to love riding. | ||

Glad your friend will live to ride another day. OT - How do most people here organize the ride order? We usually put the most experienced at head and tail and put the newbies in the "hammock". I dont't know if that really helps but it makes the tailgunner feel more protective. | ||

The bike is actually in pretty decent shape. It still runs. My buddy (R6) and I picked up his bike today from the towing company, and it started right up. The engine guards did their job well. The tank, front fender, windshield, footpads, and I'm sure several other little pieces will need to be replaced on the right side, but overall, I am surprised at how well it held up. This is his very first bike. I'm hoping it won't scare him away for good, but I think his mother might flip out if he gets back out there. His parents are doing well. I met them at the airport on Saturday evening when they flew in. Mom was worried, but they were doing well today. Saw him today after we picked up his bike and he's doing alright. They aren't going to perform surgery on his ankle until the swelling goes down some. The broken ribs are the where the real pain is. That helmet saved his life, the boots saved his foot, and the jacket saved him a lot of road-rash. I spoke with the police today and the driver of the car is at fault. Thank you for all your prayers, I will be sure to pass them along. Wear a helmet, and all the other safety gear! | ||

This is nothing personal against your buddy and it's been talked about before here, but why in the world does someone need a Road King for a first bike? That is just way too much bike for someone with no experience. You say he tried to swerve but it wasn't enough. Of course not. Those bikes weigh close to 800lbs.....and that's without a ton of extra accessories. I hope he's ok. But I think he needs to reconsider that Road King and start out with something a little smaller. |
