Anyone else here that has yet to insure their bike itching to ride? I live on the west coast and I have been wating for April to insure the old M2 (I usually go April-Oct because of the climate), and yesterday we got a couple inches of snow in the city!! My local dealership has a demo day soon and I want to try the Firebolt out. They have two presold already, the first Buells that they have ever presold in their stores history, and they are both new owners of Buell, not people trading up!! That is good news for Buell. How is the riding weather in your area and how long do you insure for?

Two weeks ago I went for a quick run for about 30 minutes and almost froze but it felt so good. The streets were dry and most of the snow was melted. There was even grass showing.

Yesterday we got dumped on with snow about 20 cm and out came the snowblower hopefully for the last time this winter.

By early April the days will start to warm up and the snow will finally melt.

Hopefully, I will soon get in for the new rear tire that is desperately needed.

But, thats all I can expect from the weather seeing I am living on a giant rock in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. But the roads are so twisty.

I usually insure for about 6mths or so. After that if I need coverage I just call and add to my auto policy for a day or so.

Safe Riding to my friends in the South.

I bought my M2 in August of '01 and it's been insured ever since. I had to park it for a week to avoid riding in the snow, but other than that I've been riding almost daily all winter.

It's currently 53 degrees here in Raleigh, NC.

194.00 a year!!

Try 1000.00 a year for an X1 and my insurance would not insure for less than a year! And I do have a clear driving record.

I got the bike on March 8th 2002 and the next day was unbelievable, sooo lucky. But its been crapy and cold since. Dying to go out for a ride.

I pay $190 every six months for liability/uninsured with progressive. Guess that's not too bad considering I'm 21 years old and have a few speeding tickets. What are the other young guys here paying? (are there other young guys?)

I live in Alberta, Canada and I pay about $400.00 a year for $1000,000 liability and fire and theft coverage for a full year. No collision coverage though as it's too expensive. Won't be riding for a while, forecast for tonight is -31 deg C. We still have about a foot of snow too. Maybe by the end of April!

My Buell has been front wheel-less for some time now. My brother was supposed to get his shop to fabricate a front wheel spacer to replace the stock speedo drive I already got rid of. He's been pissed at me over his fiance trying to flirt with me, so it looks like I've gotta find me a machine shop.

I live in Western NY and pay $570 a year for full coverage with Progressive. I have several tickets and am a 24 y/o.

The weather here is shitty but rideable. I need to ride...

Buellnuts,

No joke you are just about right, the exchange rate is brutal! Just as I was saying the snow has cleared up we got another dump... I don't want anyone unfamiliar with the area thinking I live with the Eskimo's or anything, this kind of snow is not the usual thing around here. The one thing that makes it all worthwhile is that I can ride to a mountain, a beach, or a beautiful forest all within 20 mins from where I live...when its not snowing.

East Texas, ride all year long, insurance is $290/yr. Y'all shelling out $1000/yr ought to look into increasing your deductible. That will significantly reduce your premiums.

Oh believe you me, I've tried it all! The $1000.00/yr goes with a $2000.00 deductible

My insurance is up in June, and I plan on removing the collision option, that'll take it down by $400.00.

The part that pisses me off is that I paid $650.00/yr full coverage on my Fatboy.

Not in my province, the other thing is we have a provincial provider of insurance so you have no option but to go with them for your basic insurance. You can purchase all your extra's from another company, but there is no getting around the provincial Insurance Corp. They tell us it is cheaper in the end but I don't think so.....

In Newfoundland the I pay about $400.00 Canadian for $1,000,000.00 Liab & Specified Perils (fire&theft). Will be taking the SP off this year as we get very few bikes stolen. Ya know where ya gonna go to hide the only Buell on the whole island. Collision here would add about $700-$1000 to my premium so I can do without that. The policies are annual but the premium is rated from about April - November each year so there is really no advantage to cancelling as by the time November hits almost 100% of the premium had been earned.

Setta, which province are you in because there is a program for Motorcycles www.openroadprogram.com . I know they are big in Ontario and not sure of other provinces. The policies are underwritten by Primmum Insurance Company. I also know that the rates that would apply to my province are a bit higher than what I currently pay.

I'm in Ontario and insured with Primmum! How does $1600 CAD premium and $2000 deductible for 1,000,000 liab/Collision/SP sound to you

I'm a safe driver with a clean record! It's just a rip off. I plan on cancelling the collision, which according to them only saves me $400!

Newfie_Buell,

I am in British Columbia, and all basic insurance has to go through ICBC (Insurance Corp of BC). I can get the extras through a third party, but the only one available that covers motorcycles in BC is an Alberta company called Megson Fitzpatrick INC. It helps, but I have very few options here.

Newfie & Setta,

In the States you can insure a second vehicle for less if it is a secondary vehicle (to your primary cage that is) and keep the miles under 5K per year. Don't know if that option exists in your land. And Progressive here does rock, in Michigan $253 USD for 95 Thunderbolt.

I'm in New Brunswick paying around $CDN400 ($US250) a year for full coverage including collision.

My broker is an independent local who rides Harleys and has set up a special "biker friendly" insurance programme... he's captured tons of the local biker business. He's looking at going national, but I'm sure local regs are getting in his way. My insurance card lists my carrier as The Sovereign General Insurance Company, Calgary.

My fellow Canucks... might be worth checking out...

http://www.sovereigngeneral.com

or contact my broker to see what he knows about getting better rates in Canada...

WoW and I was bitching over my rates. Here is what I guess isn't so bad a deal. $550.00 a year for FULL Coverage on a 2000 Night Train, a 1992 Fat Boy (the wife's), a 2000 100" Rigid Chopper and the Buell S1W. I'm with Allstate and they consider Buells Harley's for insurance puposes. By the way I also have a 2001 Ducati 996S that I can't afford to insure so it's now for sale! I'm in So Cal and ride to work almost every day! My truck just sits. I can also tell you that Allstate was awesome when I got rearended in Denver on my S-2, no grief, replaced stuff that wasn't even damaged no questions asked

I finally got my M2 out for the first time this season on Tuesday. The vibration was so bad it was basically unrideable. It felt like the whole bike was going to come apart at anything above 3000 rpms.

So I came to badweatherbikers.com and did a search on cold and vibration and someone else reported this same problem in cold weather. Anyway, I had it out again yesterday and the vibration was quite a bit less but still there. I had it out again today (it was quite a bit warmer) and the vibration is gone! Smooth as silk.

So if there are any cold weather bikers taking their Buell out for it's first spin don't be alarmed if it vibrates like crazy at first in the cold. It seems to get less with warmer weather or maybe just riding it helps to loosen up the isolators.

I forgot to mention that I pay about $375 a year for full coverage year round with State Farm. They give a "seasonal vehicle" adjustment here in Minnesota.

Also, badweatherbikers.com is awesome! Without it I probably would have panicked about my excessive vibration and taken it straight to the dealer.

M2m2: Suggest you check your primary chain adjustment and the tensioner shoe. I've ridden three different M2's in sub freezing weather. None of them exhibited any undue vibration. Cold isolators would not cause undue vibs.

John,
Welcome aboard!
I too am from the Mpls area, I rode my M2 to work today for the first time this year.
I rode my M2 until Thanksgiving last year with no vib problems.
Something is amiss... Drop me a note if your not too comfortable with the mechanical stuff on these bikes. I'll be more than happy to have a look see to figure it out.

BTW, there is a Brag meeting on 4/4 at StPaul HD/Buell. Kind of a relaunch of the chapter.
Should be a good get together. If you're interested, let me know and I'll give you the details.

Thanks for the input guys but I still believe there is a relation to excess vibration and cold isolators. See this post from Hoser on January 1, 2002 (in Drivetrain - Primary Drive: Archive through January 06, 2002):

Quote:

Vibrates more when it's cold ?? , and smoothes out to almost normal when it's fully warmed up ? , .......... like when the isolators warm up ? .
Isolators are quite stiff when cold and transfer more vibration to the frame and rider , as they warm up they become much more complient , this is more noticable in our climate ( Canada ).

This is what gave me hope on Tuesday. As I said in my previous post the vibration problem is GONE! Today I even rode on the freeway. I normally "cruise" at about 4000 rpms and the bike is very smooth. I did nothing to the bike between Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday it was shaking like crazy. The only way I can explain it is there is some correlation between cold and stiff isolators. Just 24-48 hours before my first ride it had been VERY cold. Low temps in the single digits.

Bluzm2:
I can't make the Brag meeting on the 4th. I am going to Chicago that morning (no, I am not riding). I would like to get to a meeting sometime this season though.

In the grand and glorious state of Washington insurance is NOT required for motorcycles. The law states that every one in the known universe with a very few exceptions is required to have insurance. Then, in the very smallest of fine print it clearly states that motorcycles are an exception. No doubt your finance company requires you to have insurance but after the bike is paid off the choice is up to you. Maybe that's the way it is in you area too.

Ping me for a copy of the Washington State law

Ray that is one fooled up law.

In my opinion, the main reason for carrying insurance is to protect oneself from being sued for your negligant acts against your neighbor.

I rode today, March 30, 2002, the weather was a mere 1 degree celsius which is about 34 for your american riders. Almost froze my off, but it was worth the 30 minutes.

Blake, gotta love those emoticons.

Safe Riding
