First, the service dept./dealer I used is considered the best in town for tire installation, (and it is not HD.) They have had good luck putting on tires when other dealers have had trouble.

The first tire was mine, a rear, and the sidewall "blew out" when they inflated to set the bead. They made good on it and special ordered another Corsa, at their cost, and had the second one do the same thing this afternoon.

They keep the regular Diablo in stock, and they got it on just fine.

Two questions:

I now have a front and rear both "street" Diablos and a track school on Saturday. Are these tires good enough?

Any ideas as to what happened to the Corsas? Two defective tires?

Thanks,

Charlie

As long as they're not Dunlops, you're fine. As to what caused the failures, your guess is as good as mine.

OK, what's so bad about Dunlops? I realize that everybody has their preferences but I have gone thru about 15 now and have no complaints whatsoever.
What I don't get is why someone slams a product on some half-a__ed idea that they get or worse yet, what they may have heard.
Don't get me started about Bridgestones. See what I mean.

No, I'm speaking from personal experience, and as you have just done, am entitled to my own opinion whether you agree with it on not. Now, what the hell is wrong with Bridgestones!?

The Diablo's will be fine, you will just see the difference when you get a chance to trackday the corsa's.

I have to agree with Rocketsprink, the squirm I experienced from the Dunlops did not inspire confidence in my XB at all, yet on other model bikes the Dunlops were fine, but, keep in mind, the stock 207/208 for the XB's are not the same 207/208's sold off the shelf at most supply houses, they are only available in the lighter carcus from HD/Buell.

As to the sidewalls, might want to check the DOT numbers and see if they are of the same batch date, they could have been damaged in shipping in some way or just have a defective bead. Its very unusual for a tire to blow out the sidewall on install unless it was pinched or cut by the mounting levers.

I would assume cut or pinched as Mikel suggested, but...

If there was no lubricant used at all, combined with the softer rubber wanting to stay on the wrong side of the bead more... Could that blow a sidewall?

That makes sense to me, M1. You would have thunk that they would be extra cautious with the second tire, (that they bought.)

Hindsight: I should have just waited and had some Pilot Powers installed at the track, where they are available.

Them biting the bullet is more towards customer service, its better to just take responsibility up front and replace the tire, then to try and claim it isn't their fault. Sides, defects are easy for a shop to get replaced, its proving to the manufacturer its a defect that can be the difficult part. If they are as experienced as you say, I doubt they went light on the tire lube, MC tires use more then cars, basically if it ain't drippin, it ain't enough.

My dealer uses silicone spray and the tires slide right on. Just a hint for those who change tires...

Rocky-
Let's not get testy now! My comment was because I hear too many people make a blanket statement like "Dunlops are pure c__p". I would guess most of the time they are saying that not because they really know but because they want people to think that they are good riders.
The reason I don't like Bridgestone is purely political. I saw what they did to the Firestone union rubber workers in DesMoines about 15 years ago.

I am a good rider. Up to temp and riding hard, they stick like glue. Riding at normal speeds, I think they slip a little. BUT, that's my opinion. No one has to take it as God's word. On the other note, glad you shared you views on the Bridgestones. Being a Union member myself, I think I will not be considering them for my next set.

Saw one of the damaged tires today. It was not the sidewall, it was a 1 cm, or so,section of the bead that "chipped" out. Service manager said they "lubed the hell out of it" before they inflated it.

Uhh... You might do well to remember that our Buells (except for the CX) come with Dunlops, so anyone who has had their bike since new will most likely have actual experience on Dunlop D207's.

They (specifically D207's) DO suck. I haven't really ever heard anything particularly good about any of the other Dunlops either.

Hmm ... my take on the stock Dunlops is that they stick well for a sport street tire. I have run them hard on hot summer days and I have always had confidence they would hold. That's about all the good I have to say about the stock Dunlops.

- Front was cupped within 2000 miles.
- The rear wore uneven, so that the bike would slightly pull to the right.
- They wear out FAST
- The rear was square at 3500 miles (but not yet worn out)
- Rain and cold weather performance is poor
- The rear, a 180, is actually a 190, which looks cool, but negatively effects steering.
- The rear rounding is too flat, again not good for steering.

Going from the stockers straight to the Corsa's I can tell you that these tires will give you a new bike. Especially if you have your suspension set up properly.

Don-
I've seen you ride so I'll take your word, my guess is that Mikel is the same calibre but he's out of commisssion for awhile.
If you guys are getting such good mileage out of your tires how do you get that much of a chance to run different brands? Even at the 10-12,000mi. that I ride a year I still only change tires 1-2 times per year. Unfortunately the bulk of my riding is straight line so mileage is more important than traction.
I've noticed the bike makes a difference too. My CBR wears out the front tire about as fast as the rear. I've never had a bike do that before. If Honda will put a D205 on a bike that will go over 170mph, that is good enough for me.

Have you contacted Pirelli and told them of the problem ? It may be more than a freak occurance - the last set of Diablo Corasas I had installed were a real pain to get the bead t oset, granted they did and everythings hinkey dorey , but, if you had a problem like that, Id bet they wold like to know -
And as for the tire debate, I had been a huge Dunlop fan for years, untill I tried something else, mainly the Pirelli Diablo Corsas, what a great tire ! Its much better than the 208s in every way !
Something Ive noticed about the Dunlops, espically the US made ones, they are SUPER sensitive to air pressures - I had a frnt. tire that I unknowlingly used 3 lbs down from spec and it cupped out in a matter of a 100 miles. So Dunlop guys/gals. make sure you check your pressures faniticly .

Well, I kept the rubber down and melted yesterday using the "street" Diablo front and rear. The Frank Kinsey Racing school was a real eye opener, and my first track day.

Of the non school "track day" guys, many were racers, and one was a past Canadian Superbike Rookie of the Year. He had his own tuner and did not touch his bike except to ride. Did I remember to say he was fast?

Everyone should do a track day!

Because I am not, but everything I HAVE run has gotten more confidence inspiring milage then the 207's that came stock. Even the Shinko Raven, sport touring tires currently on my bike are more confidence inspiring cold then the stock 207's I had and going up South Mountain giving chase to Bartimus on his SX I pulled a McCoy with full spin up for about a good 4 feet in a corner because the back end slid out. The Ravens are very cold blooded, have held up extremely well to the squaring condition my commuting causes and when they do warm up, stick VERY well, not Diablo well, but better then the Continental Conti-Force I had on prior.
