I will be heading out to San Diego the last week in February, and I was looking for some advice from some of the local Buellers of all the good stuff to see and do and eat.

Unfourtuantely I will not have my bike with me, but I will have my wife. Which more than makes up for not having the bike. :):) (She always comes first to me)

We plan on doing the Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Lego Land, Tijuanna, possibly Sea World. What I really need is a romantic place to take my wife for her birthday. The kind of place that will score me some big points.

Also if any of you local Buellers want to meet up, the beer is on me.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

well, I don't go out to the high rent restaraunts that much, but a couple suggestions might be:

One of the few nice seafood restaraunts right there on the bay like Anthonys or one of the others in Seaport village.

There are a few dinner cruises that go out on the bay. They putt around the entire bay for a few hours and the food has been good on the ones I've been on. Not a real private dinner, but can be romantic after the meal up on deck where others aren't. They leave from right next to Anthony's, about a mile south of the airport. Reservations are a good idea.

There's a couple nice expensive restaruants in the La Jolla cove area. $$$

But while you are here, you MUST go to Rubios for lunch. It's a pseudo fast food mexican restaraunt chain, specialty is beer battered Fish tacos/fish burritos. Most of our relatives/friends that have visited here have always had the same reaction: Fish tacos, YUK. But we MAKE them eat one, then they end out wondering why no one has opened one up near wherever they came from. Do it, trust me. Low class guy that I am, I prefer Rubios to many much fancier places.

You'll want to party one night in the gaslamp district. When we moved here in 87, it was a ghost town downtown after dark. Gaslamp is absolutely HOPPING now, lots of bars/bands/clubs whatever.

You'll be in prime whale-watching season, if you want to take one of the boatrides out for a few hours. Be forewarned though - lots of people get seasick.

I guess you gotta do tijuana, foul and disgusting place that it is. Just to say that you have. Best bet: take the trolley to the border, walk across and either walk the half mile to revolucion blvd (ave? street?whatever) or overpay a taxi to drive you right from the border. It's a party party time down there on weekends, all the underage drinkers go there.

there's a few of us from SD that hang here...SteveH, JeffSd, chime in.

Al,

Thanks for the tips. Rubios is definitely on my list. I always love trying new things.

I'm with you, expensive doesn't necesarrily mean good. What I was looking for was that awe factor from my wife. The dinner cruise thing on the bay is just up her alley. We have done several of those on Lake Michigan, other inland lakes, and on the ocean in Mexico. It's always been a good investment for ME :)

We had the possibility of getting our hotel in the Gaslamp district, but the reservations came through for the Coranado Beach Hotel/Club place. (I forget the exact name.) We'll check it out one night for sure.

Whale watching sounds good to me. It's been a while since I've gone to visit my relatives anyway.:)

Thanks for the advice,

Jerry

Blastin,
Let me know when you get here. Maybe some of us SD Buellers can get together for a drink. My girl and I can show you some good clubs in the Gaslamp also...

Man, does the Hotel Del still do it's Sunday morning brunch?...That, along with a little French restaurant up in San Jose, La Mouton Noire, are among the two best meals I've ever had...My better half tells me that Anthony's is where they used to go for prom dates...So it's been around a while and must still be doing a lot right...

See Ya!

Thanks Juan for showing us around on Friday night, we realy enjoyed ourselves. Hopefully next time I'll have the bike with me. Our offer still stands, if you ever find yourself in Milwaukee, let us know and we'll show you around here.

San Diego is a nice place. How big are the city limits? They seem to be extrodinarily huge compared to most citys I've been to.
We went to the Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, Seaworld, Encinada Mexico, Whale Watching, Gaslamp, and even stopped in at Rubio's. FISH TACOS ARE AWSOME. Thanks Al for the suggestions.
It was a big shock the system to come home to 8 inches of snow and below 0 degrees temperatures. Oh well spring is around the corner and the new pipe is waiting for me to put it on.

Thanks everyone,

Jerry

Jerry,
Believe it or not, the actual city limits of SD extend all the way to the wild animal park, but only along rivers. Everything else is either just unincorporated county or part of the local cities (i.e Del Mar, Encinitas, Escondido, Carlsbad, etc) Los Angeles actually owns the Owens valley all the way up past Mammoth, more than 300 miles away. In SoCal, water rights are everything....

Sounds like you did it right, glad you had a great time. Too bad Rubios doesn't expand north and eastward, eh?

Al
