Does anyone know a way to convert an X1 speedo to an electronic version. I'm looking for something like on the R1 or R6. I have a front fairing very much like the one on the Firebolt, and could make a custom dash to hold it......Thanks in advance for any help |

Hmmm, interesting. Your existing speedo is an electronic stepper motor type similar to the tachometer (no drive cable to the front wheel), but I know what you are asking. You want an LCD display, right? It might be a simple matter of buying the speedo you want, figuring how to convert the Buell's magnet/sensor output into compatible electrical input (voltage), then slapping on one of those aftermarket speedo offset boxes. Or, the required input could be totally different. Yo might then consider a bycycle "cyclometer". They are driven from a magnet mounted on any final drive component where a stationary sensor can also be easily afixed nearby. Like put the magnet on the inner face of the final drive pulley and glue the sensor to the swingarm. The disadvantage there is that your wire will need to cross a moving axis. Not good for longevity of wire. The front pulley might be a better choice. The stock sensor, I'm thinking, ought to provide a compatible enough signal though. Maybe. Others more knowledgeable, please chime in here! |

The use of bicycle speedo's is common with the street fighter movment in europe. They are small, easy to mount or hide, and have lots of other features. The downside is that only go to 99mph. I know this isn't quite what you wanted, but I thought it might be something to think about. Jon |

Another problem with digital bicycle speedo's is that they don't tend to have backlighting, which makes it mighty difficult to see the digits at night. Some people have attached small lamps to their handlebar/cockpit that they point at the speedo, but somehow I don't really see myself doing that on my S1W. If anyone knows of a digital bicycle speedo with backlight, please let us know! Cheers, Semi |

Sigma has a good line of bicycle speedo's, and is the only company I know of that carries a light in their product line for that purpose. I fabricated mounts out of sheet stainless to hold the speedo, pickup, and light, had to safety wire the pickup in place to prevent it from jumping out of it's mount, and mounted the bare magnet with a dab of epoxy to the front wheel. Also, a little electrical tape should be used on any point where the wire contacts an edge, as the wires tend to be very frail. Most cycle speedo's also go well over 99mph...at least the quality units. Mine goes to 183m/h, 300km/h. |

Rick's right about the Sigma's. When I installed my Sigma 1200 on the Bandit I also ordered a rear wheel mount kit. It's only ten bucks more and it provides you with a longer and more durable cable for the pickup. I also spent about four buck more for a couple of small (1/16 x 3/16) rare earth magnets at Radio Shack. MUCH easier to install that the magnet provided with the computer. Here's a link to a site that shows how to install it... http://www.dealsgap.com/sigmabc1200.html Ray |

A bigger bicycle-type speedo that is designed for dirt bikes is available at http://www.trailtech.net/computer.htm I have one on my S1 and like it a lot. It's more rugged than most bicycle speedos and it's waterproof too. The only problem with bicycle speedos (and the Trailtech) is that they don't have an always-on backlight. |

If anyone wants to replace their mechanical speedo drive with an electronic type, this is how to make the needed wheel spacer to go in its place. I got this from Battle2win, but their original drawing was WRONG...so it's been altered accordingly. |
