I am new to the buell scene. Is this cyclone engine stock? or are these the thunderstorm heads? I think I remember hearing that "thunderstorms" are black.

looks like ya got stock Thunderstorms there -- which is good

a course, what's inside may differ, and black i seasily laid down on older heads, but it looks like ya got stockers there

that said, the exhaust looks older (black headers) -- what year scoot is it?

It's got to be a '99-up (which came stock with the T-Storm engine with the torquey, Sporty cams), based on the added frame tube (unless it has been added to an earlier tube frame). If only the engine # were more legible I'd be able to tell from that.

another q. How much of a difference is the cams in the cyclone opposed to lightning/thundrbolt?
Is a cyclone going to be 'screaming' to be doin 100mph?

Int -- cams in the M2 are more biased toward torque at lower RPMs, while Lightening/Tbolt are more focus on HP at higher RPMs (higher, of course, being relative)

some with M2s have swapped X1 cams straight in, and love em

others like the torque of the stock M2 set

ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances

the M2 as it sits will (as our poet-philosopher MikeJ states) be screaming at the ton --

all things being equal, on a tight track, the M2 will give the X1 real trouble on the twisty parts, while the X1 will pull away on the longer straights

Another useful mod is a shifter upgrade kit, much neater & a more positive shift, I've got the same bike, same colour, just euro spec. & I LOVE IT!!!!

Interceptor, I've got an 02 Cyclone that I put Screamin' Eagle cams in (Basically X1 grind) along with Screamin' Eagle performance valve springs and keepers. Also have the race kit and a re-jetted CV40. My bike was bone stock when I bought it and dyno'ed at 73 rwhp and 67 ftlbs torque. After all my mods it now has 91 rwhp and 84 ftlbs torque. I didn't lose any torque. In fact, in stock form my bike would barely hop the front tire in hard 1st gear throttle roll on. Now I really have to watch how hard I crack the throttle in the first 2 gears. This bike is a torque MONSTER. In fact, I really surprised a guy on an XB12R when I dusted him between lights! Go for the "B" (X1) cams and a good exhaust and breather. You will love how it wakes up your engine.

you mean an andrews " b" cam for the x1 , heheh interested i got a 2001 here.

The "B" cam is H/D terminology. The "D" cams are the standard Sportster/Buell cams that came in M2's. As memory serves the lift of the "B" cams is .500. can't remember duration. I do know it has a fair amount of overlap and is a fairly aggressive profile. You can get by with stock springs, but the S/E performance springs and keepers with damper coils work really well to keep from floating at higher revs. Not sure who grinds these cams for H/D. May well be Andrews.

Hey interceptor! Next time you change the oil ask for a filter that will fit the dyna series. It's longer and will hold a little more oil. Plus personally I think they look better.

Yes, the lift of the X1 "Lightning" cams is .500 as opposed to the .490 lift of the stock M2 "Sportster" cams. The Andrews N4 grind is essentially the same thing. I've got the Andrews N8 grind in my M2. Same lift (.500) but more duration, overlap and earlier timing. (Go to www.andrewsproducts.com for a complete listing of Andrews cam specs and their recommended useage.) It's definitely different, once you've gotten used to the torque of the stockers down low, but man, what a difference upstairs!!! And yes, 115 all day would be no problem. This bike, even stock, is a torque monster. Think of it as a new canvas on which to paint the bike of your dreams. Interceptor, spend some time in the Knowledge Vault and get a feel for what's out there for your bike before deciding on any mods. I started with essentially the same "canvas" ('99 M2) and am extremely happy with what I've got.

Are any other mods needed to fit the Andrews N8 cams? I'm looking to replace my lifters & have been thinking about doing the cams at the same time. I don't want to go mad, I just want to be able to put the original back sprocket back on with no loss of launch power.

Not sure what the profile is on the N8's but I put some SE 536's in my cylcone and only had to grind a little bit of the inside edges on the middle rocker box, everything else bolted right up. I used some new springs, collars, seals and keepers but pretty much retained everything else stock, aside from carb and exhuast, just honed and lapped it in and took off from there.

Andrews lists the N8's as "bolt-in" cams; that is, with the lift and duration, these cams *should* utilize stock valves, springs, push rods and lifters with no engine modification necessary. That being said, you should ALWAYS take care after installing any new cams to ensure there are no clearance problems. Pull the engine through without plugs at the very least. In my case, the N8's were just that...bolt-on. No further mods necessary (this of course excludes jetting and the like). The N8's have close to the same lift (.500) as the stock X1 Lightning cams,(.490) so there is little reason to think there would be any clearance problems. They do make a little more gear noise, but with the race muff on there I really don't notice!




Anyway, there is little difference in lift between the N4/N8 profile and the stock Cyclone cams... (.458) VS (.490/.500). The main difference lies in the duration and the cam timing. Go to www.andrewsproducts.com for cam specs on all their cams, as well as their recommendations for your application. I'm sure Screamin' Eagle and RedShift post their specs online as well, but I don't have any web addresses for you.


Of course, the OTHER difference lies in the performance! It's hard for me to measure the difference the cams alone made because I installed the race kit and HSR at the same time. What I can tell you is that the difference in performance overall is not just astounding, it's a little scary too. I miss the "grunt" response between 2 and 3K a little, but upstairs of 3K, it's like lassoing a bottle rocket. You just have to alter your riding style a wee bit to keep the R's in the 3-4K range. Just my .02-hope it helps.
