You may have seen some of the magazines showing the newest Steve Storz Sportster Flat Tracker kit he has come out with.

Woz had one at Ducati night in Lafeyette Monday night...wow, really nice bike, and he was able to cut about 80 pounds off of the weight of the bike...You need to see this one in person. rex

Sure is a good looking bike and a fine example of what Harley could have offered in lieu of the 883R street tracker.

Wish similar body work was available for the X1.

I think the kit rocks. If I had too much time and money on my hands I wouldn't mind putting one together.

I've seen one of these in my local area that was made from a converted Buell M2.

That is truly a proper-looking motorcycle.

Has anybody tallied up the cost of the parts to do the conversion? I gave up at $7,000, bike not included. I think I could buy a pretty nice M2 and track-ify it for quite a bit less.

Unlike the other conversions (Mule, Lawill, etc.), this one utilizes the maximum amount of OEM parts so that the cost is kept low.

As a result, it is primarily a cosmetic change until you get into the chain drive and Buell Forks and perhaps real Dirt Tracker Wheels which will limit your selection of tires significantly.

Scitz...sure would like to know more about the M2 conversion and see some pics. Figure if it can be done to the M2, there ought to be a way to do it to my X1.

Off the record, the more I look at the street trackers and consider the cost of modifying, I develop a deeper fondness for my X1.

Actually, just the seat and tail section from the street tracker would satisfy me. Perhaps the front fender and a different flyscreen as well. Regardless, the chain drive would be to die for.

Oh well, as long as there are topics about street trackers, my dreams will continue to get better. Unfortunately, that applies to Adventure Tourers, Sport Tourers and SuperMotards as well.

Dang, no wonder my sleep patterns are so messed up. LMAO

The guy said he got the frame from C&J dirt track frames out of CA. I wish I had a camera that day after seeing it, good reason to get camera phone. I don't know where he got the body parts, I assume the same place. The body parts looked the same so they may be some generic piece that Storz is putting there name on. The one I saw had a chrome frame and I think the oil tank was right behind the fork neck molded into the frame and looked better than having it under the seat.

Scitz...Thanks for the update.

I was just hoping that he had done the conversion without the need for a new frame as that option has always been available but ads significantly to the cost.

Oh well, someday I will figure out how to do it on the cheap. LOL

me too, disappointed -- love street trackers, and would love to see what could be done with the M2 Frame --

btw, adding a flat track seat on the stock frame appears a piece of cake (measurement wise), but the seat just doesn't look good with the tank (Manta or early slim version) (a big thanks to glitch for helping me figure that out virtually)

if only my metal working skills were well developed enough to bang a flat-track-like tank outa metal . . .. . . .

so much to learn, so little time to learn it in

Bomber...can you post or email a pic of the concept art Glitch did for you?

Would love to play with it a little. I am constantly doing concept work the old fashioned way. Translation: on print outs of pics with the felt pen and white out.

Unfortunately, the next step for me is getting a top view of the X1 on the centerstand while hanging from the rafters in the garage. Think I just might wear my helmet for that one. LMAO

PS: I really had fun revamping the body work on Harley's Street Rod. Well, at least until I realized what a pig that bike is compared to a Buell.

outie -- I'm saddened to say that Glitch sent me some artwork, and I proceeded to print it out, cut it out with my blunt-noses scissors, and use the minty flavored paste to put em together . . . . ..

here's a starting point for ya!

i like the look of the bike. but i have a question. all the changes that are made, are they purely asthetic changes? i see that it lightens the bike by 80+ lbs. but is there any other benefit? i do like the look.

much better suspension -- likely better brake performance -- no clue on the exhaust, but I'd bet it adds a little over the stocker -- a loss of 80 lbs is MAJOR (7 pounds approx = 1 hp, so right there you're up about 11 HP before any exhaust gains are factored in)

a fair amount of the 80 lb is lost in unsprung weight, I'd guess -- better handling in the bumpy real wolrd roads that many of us favor

Bomber...Thanks will play around with that for a while. Not much difference between cut'n'paste and white out with a felt pen for us old guys, eh?

Incidentally, my first impression leads me to believe it can be easier to accomplish with and X1 compliments of the frame spar over all that plastic on the sides. Am probably wrong as usual with that assessment. Hahaha!

Bomber, metal is cheap, bang away! From what I've seen, you're selling your metal-working skills short...

Actually, I think it would be hard to get that XR-750 shape in a tank that would fit a Buell frame, because the Buell motor sits high and the top of the frame is wide, as opposed to the Sportster, which has a single top tube and a relatively low-slung motor. It'd have to be real wide to hold more than a few pints of gas.

Years ago, a Buell was featured in Cycle World that had a reasonable facsimile of an XR750 tank and seat.

It didn't look as cool as the real (XR or Buell) thing, though.

brer thang -- you are a ring-tail sweet-talker -- I've managed to get one compund curve into a piece a sheet pretty much where I wanted it -- lucky me, it was only a halfmile radius that was wanted ;-}

yeah, and the frame's wider too (for very good reasons -- ain't engineering grand?) -- getting that sweet XR750 look outa a Buell would be very tough

So what you are trying to tell me is it is all or nothing.

Good thing I like the power and handling of the X1 and can do a lot with it. Quite simply a Mule, Lawill or even a Storz conversion isn't in the budget right now.

Anybody hear what Triumph's plans are for the Mule Street Tracker they paraded around the International Motorcycle Shows this year?

That thing looks as much like an xr750 as one of those old 1960s fiberglass RollsRoyce bodies bolted to a volkswagon looks like a RollsRoyce.

About 10 years ago I was considering putting all the Storz pieces on this.

84 XR-1000
84 XR-1000

After figuring out what it would cost and what I would end up with, I used the money for this.

99 X-1

The X-1 has the performance, handling, and braking I was looking for, and the XR is now a classic. Two bikes are better than one. By the way, the pipes on the Storz bike are on the wrong side, and it's missing a carb.

This pipe looks much better than the goofy Storz one...
