Nice day today and I figured I would get the bike out and give her a nice wash and polish.

Wheels are always last and I'm about done rinsing the wheels before I polish them when I can hardly get up. Lower back just locked up. I managed to get inside and walk up and down the living room like an 120 year old fart, I tried to sit down but man, it hurts! Did some more walking and after 30 minutes or so I was able put the bike away, went back inside, had a beer or 2 and watched a few DS9 episodes laying on my side, back, belly and some sitting straight up with a pillow in my back. The hurting is getting worse and I really feel like right now. I'll try to get to work tomorrow and make an appointment with a physiotherapist. I had this once before but really didn't expect it to return at this particular moment. No warning, nothing. I felt great and out of the blue it comes ....

Pinched nerve I bet. Happened to me last year, chiropracter helped a bit, but they told me in about 3 days I'd be back to normal anyway.

Alternate heating pad and ice-pack. Lie on your back and pull your knee to your chest. Hold and repeat. After a day or two, go for a walk even if it hurts to do so.
At 6'6" and nearing fifty, I'm a pro at sore backs.

Man, I had that happen once. Carrying the wife up the steps. Bad idea. I was just amazed at how it totally imobilizes you. You want to move but the instinct to curl up into a little bad keeps taking over. Call in sick tomorrow. Lay in bed. Eat bon bons and watch soaps. It will be the best thing for you.

Figured it would be better in the morning, but that quickly changed when I wanted to go pee. I could hardly turn around, and I had to let myself slide off the bed, onto my hands and knees and, using the side of the bed as support, crawl like I'm one of the lowest and most miserable creatures that draws breath on this earth.

But I managed to pee in a bucket, and after a little rest and with some help I was able to get up and right now I am able to walk around. Not as good as yesterday but still.

I pinched or pulled or tore (your choice)a muscle in my back saturday while riding. Hurt like hell. After it started in my middle back under my right shoulder blade, it spread out and now it hurts in my upper back, my shoulder and my neck. But not near as bad. All I did was shift my weight a little coming out of a corner and >POW<.
I know I'm o-fishally an old fart now but, daaaang.

i did the same thing to my back a few weeks ago vacuuming out the car. seems like it is always the simple things that get you. and you don't have to be an old fart. i am 23 and very athletic. just takes the right tweaking i guess.

and ingemar, i commend your dedication to the board... he has to crawl to the bathroom to pee in a bucket, but still has the power to post his story.

Ingemar: Looks like the old fashioned "Spit":
Local muscle condition and secundary cramping of adjacent muscles. Rest, local heat, painkiller and muscle relaxans (yes, you need your doctors advise and recipe for them) will do a lot in a few days. Be very careful with the heat (warmth) and don`t burn the skin: You won`t feel the pain of burning as it will be overwhelmed by the back ache. An old Philips Infraphil will do well. Hot showers will help also, or an hot-water-baby bottle (kruik). I have never tried, nor advised, cold applications.
All the best. Hans

Thanks guys!

Been to the physiotherapist yesterday and will go today later in the afternoon. Other than that I was able to get out of bed on my own this morning it isn't much better today.

I usually go with cold for the first 24 - 48 hours (the acute phase) to minimize blood flow to the area in order to minimize swelling. Swelling being a major factor in the pain part. Then, after the acute phase is over, you're looking to increase blood flow to remove accumulated swelling and by-products.

After such an incident, a good back strengthening regimen ought to become daily routine - I've been there and haven't started yet, but it's still good advice ; )

I was told by a chiropractor once that the best back workout you could do would be to stretch often, and work your stomach-how much work does your back do especially when compared to your stomach? Our bodies are just a bunch of levers, so we have to keep them strong on both sides.

Being a victim of Degenerative disc disease, I have to deal with back problems 24/7. What I've found over the years, that helps is:

Lots of stretching. Stretch all the trunk muscles, including quads hams calves. They are all connected to your trunk. When they get tight, they pull your pelvis or spine out of alignment. When you pull a muscle or get injured, the brain tells the muscles to contract. That helps immobilize the injured area. That just leads to walking around funny and more misalignment.

In addition to stretching, stomach and back strengthening. As you get older, discs tend to flatten or bulge due to micro-compressions over the years. A gap develops between the discs and the muscles due to weakness. That room lets the discs bulge more, eventually causing pinched nerves and worse. By strengthening those muscles, you close the gap. This gives additional support to the spine and helps prevent problems.

Drugs have their place. They don't solve the problem, just put a band aid on it. Long term use will cause problems.

Just my two cents, hope this helps

I second what Trac95ker says about stretching and exercise. That's the best preventative medicine.

I've had it nail me just like you describe 4 or 5 times. Doc can prescribe muscle relaxant and anti-inflamatory pills (mega-aspirin) that will at least ease the pain. You can sleep for DAYS while taking this stuff; kind of hard to hold a job while on them and you don't want to think about getting on a bike.

In my experience, I recover much faster if I get up and start walking around; lying still only prolongs the agony.

Good luck.

Thanks again for the support guys.

I can't do much of the same for longer than 15 minutes before it gets uncomfortable.

Although this one is worse than the first time (not so long ago), it still needs to be quite a bit worse for me to start taking drugs to kill the pain. The doc has done a good deal loosening it up today so I figure maybe 2 or 3 more days and I'll be back at work. The only problem there is that my job is sitting on my arse all day long ...

Ingemar: Plain painkiller was badly formulated then: The medicines, I have in mind, do kill pain, but they take away also local swelling, as cause for more pain. You can get some without prescription at any drugstore: For instance ibuprofen. Brand names: Advil, Aleve or Nurofen.
It is a real medicine. Would be pity to disregard them. They are safer than Aspirine.
Muscle relaxantia don`t go without prescription.
All the best.

I've had a back problem for years and ever since (laugh here if you like) I started YOGA I have not had problem one. I agree that it's the stretching and core strength exercises that benefit you...

Getting better by the hour. Actually worked on the bike a little bit (disconnected TFI, but left it in place), and drove around for a few minutes.

Ingemar, glad to hear you are getting better. Just don't make the mistake (like I have done more than once) of forgetting about your back once the pain goes away. It WILL hit you again without warning (this is the "voice of experience" speaking) if you don't start and maintain a regular routine of stretching and exercise.

BTW, I've found that riding my motorcycle seems to help my back. I suspect it's a combination of the riding position and vibrations. Motorcycling is good for you!
