I personally think it's WRONG to make your bike into an idol. Even the bible says so. "Thou shalt have no graven images before me." Instead you should seek counciling from your minister, or say 17,000 Hail Marys, whichever provides the best absolution.

Mike,
You have the advantage in troubleshooting of having the problem change when the instance changes. Look at what's happening on the bike when you put the kickstand down or when it is leaned over.
Does it idle ok with the stand up but the bike leaned over? You most likely have something loose like a plug wire or injector lead that is causing it to fire on just one cyclinder. Try wiggling things while it is on the stand and idling. If something is loose it should act up then. Don't grab the plug leads with your bare hands while it's running though. I've done that before.
I have found that the more you learn how to fix bikes yourself, the less likely that you'll ever get stranded on the road.

Could the bank angle sensor be going on it?

I had a loose connection at my fuel pump that caused the low fuel light to come on all the time. After that I started taking apart every connector and squirting a little no-ox grease in each one. It worked great until I broke the lead off of the head temp sensor and didn't realize it. It also caused the type of problem you described.

Ride the wheels off of that puppy. I've got 50,000mi. on my '99 S3 and have no intention of getting rid of it. I wouldn't mind an XBsx but it is too close to my DR650 in ride style (and doesn't have knobbies).

It's good that you have a service manual. I've been able to get a couple of bikes running again while on the road (they were Hondas) because I knew them inside & out.
